    3. Jim, Could you arrange for that enumerator to move over to Eastwood Parish, RFW, and pick up on my Irish ancestors who arrived there in 1847? :-) Ken Harrison North Vancouver, Canada -----Original Message----- From: lanark-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:lanark-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jim Bundy Sent: June 13, 2010 12:23 PM To: LANARK@rootsweb.com Subject: [Lanark] Old Monkland 1851 census notes on ED 51 I wanted to comment on this great Enumerator of ED 51 re Old Monkland in 1851. I've never seen such detail of birthplaces in Ireland before. It didn't occur in every entry, but by far the most of them. So much more helpful than just "Ireland". And, even in Scotland, he often went beyond the mention of county and parish, and included the village as well! If only this guy could have trained all the others. Jim Bundy

    3. Hi Listers, First, I was saddened to hear of the passing of June McCarthy. I wish all the best to her family. I wanted to comment on this great Enumerator of ED 51 re Old Monkland in 1851. I've never seen such detail of birthplaces in Ireland before. It didn't occur in every entry, but by far the most of them. So much more helpful than just "Ireland". And, even in Scotland, he often went beyond the mention of county and parish, and included the village as well! If only this guy could have trained all the others. Jim Bundy

    1. [Lanark] In Memoriam: June McCarthy
    2. Maisie Egger
    3. Dear Maisie, June asked me to send you the following message on July 4th: "Thanks for everything. Love, June" I am sending the message to you early because this morning she moved on to her eternal home. With sympathy, Lyn Hardin -------------------------------------------------------------------- To Lanark listers: Jenny Myers and I had a connection with June McCarthy through this Lanark list and it is with sadness that we now learn of her death. June came from Weaver Street, Townhead, Glasgow, just a few "closes" up from where Jenny and my great-forebears lived. She had kindly sent us a photograph of this old tenement, sadly no more. She then had a friend of hers take a photograph for me of another tenement where my mother's family lived when they returned from South Africa, also right in the centre of the oldest part of Glasgow. She also forwarded some photographs of a tenement on the Rottenrow, up from the school I attended, and which was a carbon copy of the tenement in which I was born in (the) Townhead. She, like me, knew )the) Townhead like the back of our hands. For Jenny and me, we remember June with gratitude not just as a "lurker" on this Lanark site, but as a treasure, and a current and past historian of Glasgow. Maisie Birth is a beginning and death a destination And life is a journey: >From childhood to maturity and youth to age; >From innocence to awareness and ignorance to knowing; >From foolishness to desecration and then perhaps to wisdom. >From weakness to strength or from strength to weakness and often back again; >From health to sickness and we pray to health again. >From offense to forgiveness from loneliness to love from joy to gratitude from pain to compassion from grief to understanding from fear to faith. >From defeat to defeat to defeat until looking backwards or ahead We see that victory lies not at some high point along the way but in having made the journey step by step a sacred pilgrimage. Birth is a beginning and death a destination And life is a journey; A sacred journey to life everlasting

    3. Thank you Iain, I'm sorry I've taken so long to reply to you....I chased up the websites you gave me, and got sidetracked by various bits of information I found, hoping it would lead me somewhere. No luck there, I'm afraid.. Since GWFHS may not have finished the digitising, I will follow your advice and go directly to the Glasgow City Archives..and hope they will help me with a copy of his handwritten notes... Thanks heaps Gay

    1. [Lanark] GILBERT Family
    2. L Gerholt
    3. I'm trying to find the origins of Mary GILBERT c1849 Glasgow, Lanarkshire. She is shown as Mary CAMPBELL on her Wedding Certificate to William Robert HILL on 10 Jul 1886 in Brisbane, Qld, Australia. She states her parents were Henry CAMPBELL, a Missionary, and Helen CARBARNS. Mary and William had four illegitimate daughters, then a legitimate son in 1890. The four daughters were registered under the names of HILL, and GILBERT. I haven't quite worked out why this is, unless William was married, but that's another brick wall. I searched the 1851 Lanark Census and found 2yo Mary, as a child nursing. She was living with Mrs Henry CAMPBELL, a 47yo widow, with her children John 23, Helen 16 and Sarah 13. I then found her on the 1861 Lanark Census with Helen CAMPBELL, a 57yo widow, a boarding house keeper, and Mary as a 12yo pauper, and a domestic servant. Both were born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire. At this stage I'm unable to find her on the 1871 Census. Helen CAMPBELL was a visitor on the 1871 Census in Pollokshields and she died in 1876. Would Helen CAMPBELL have adopted or fostered Mary? I have looked at the births of all Mary GILBERTS born in Lanarkshire from 1847 to 1851, then cross checked their parents with the 1851 Census and they are all there, so I'm at a loss as to where to go to from here. Mary came to Australia on board the "Toowoomba" from Glasgow on 10 Dec 1872. The ship arrived in Moreton Bay on 29 Mar 1873. Mary gave birth on the voyage, a baby girl called Mary, on 18 Dec 1872 but unfortunately the baby died a month after the ship arrived, on 21 Apr 1873. I have both the Birth and Death Certificates. The baby's father was David STEVENSON, a Mason, either 24 or 26yo born in Gourock, unmarried. Mary was 24yo and born in Parkhead. The former residence of Mary was at Gourock. I'm unable to find either David or Mary on the 1871 Census. David wasn't on the passenger list. Any help, advice and thoughts on this matter will be greatly appreciated. Laurette Australia

    3. I am seeking to learn more about my Summers and Fisher lines. Both families originated from Hamilton, Lanark. My g.g.g. grandfather was Robert Sommers, born 1780? and died between 1831 and 1841. He was married to Marion Fisher b. 1787 d. between 1861-1871. Marion's parents were Margaret Rannwicke and Thomas Fisher. Thomas Fisher's parents were James Fisher and Marrion Allan. Is there anyone researching these lines? I would love to exchange information. Thank you so much.
