Hi Doreen, I did find in my records headstone information which I obtained while in Chirnside on a William Knox who married a Mary Darling. If you would like anything on these two just let me know. Hi Doreen, I have not been able to go that far back. I am stuck with my g.g.g.grandfather John Darling who was born approx in 1811. According to records he was born in the parish of Chirnside, Harelaw, Berwick. He emigrated to Ontario. I have not been able to find his parents which is so frustrating. He married Elizabeth Mackay either in Scotland or Ontario. I have contacted other related family members and they also cannot go pass John Darling. Hi Jean I don't have anything more than what I posted because they only married into one of my Dewar lines. I'm not surprised that your cousin has a Dewar in her line because I have long list of Dewars in my family tree, they were VERY prolific. According to Grossart's excellent History of Shotts published in 1880, the estates of Murdoston had been in the hands of the Inglis family from the 15th century and by the early 18th century the family were great financial difficulties. Thomas Inglis, head of the family, sold the estate (1719) to a relation of the same name. (Alexander Inglis). quote "Alexander Inglis is not of the same family of Murdoston, but heir of the line of Inglis of Inglistarvit in Fife". In a sasine of 1709 he is described as a merchant in Edinburgh. Anyway, this Alexander died without heirs and left his estate to Alexander Hamilton, a relative who is mentioned in an old decreet as his nephew. (but probably a great-nephew). He assumed the name of Inglis as a condition of settlement. So he became Alexander Inglis Hamilton, sometimes known as Alexander Inglis alias Hamilton. Grossart goes on to say that this family died out, the last Hamilton at Murdoston was Major-General James Hamilton who died childless in 1803, he left his estate to an adopted son - James Anderson, a native of Glasgow.

Thank you so much. This is very helpful! Does anybody on the list know anything about the Alexander Hamilton that took over Murdoston? Since my father matches DNA at such a high level with many Inglis, we are thinking Alexander's family may unlock the key to our relatives in Scotland. In all of Family Tree DNA, only one Hamilton and three Inglis match at the 67 marker. Also, if anybody is interested, my father's DNA was analyzed by a gentleman studying Viking DNA in Scotland, and yes my father's DNA is called "transitional Viking". So we are not Celtic. After posting this inquiry I found what I was looking for was New Lanark World Heritage Site. Beautifully restored 18th century cotton mill village nestled in the spectacular south Lanarkshire valley in southern Scotland, close to the Falls of Clyde ... If anyone else is interested I googled it.! Looks interesting! Thanks Margaret Ont Some time ago I saw advertised a village where you can 'step back' in history in The New Lanark area. I would like to get some information but can't remember the name. Anyone help me. I will be in the area in July and I would like to visit it. Thanks Margaret Ontario

Hi Allison and Bob, Well I now know you both are probably not related to me. However you probably are related to these people in this Hamilton DNA study that I participate in (you may already be members, but I'll post it anyway for anyone who may be interested). F-204 and H-011 both have Frames from Lanarkshire: http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/g/a/gah4/HamDNA/EAnc.html#H164 I'm afraid my DNA only matches two other Hamiltons in the group (we are Group T). Our DNA matches Hamilton, Inglis and Joyners. We seem to come from Alexander Hamilton's family who was asked by his Uncle Alexander Inglis to take over the Murdostoun estate and Inglis name. None of us have a family tree link that we can find as we only can find American relatives dating back to the early 1700s. We only have our DNA. I'm hoping someone in Great Britain has the geneology from Lanarkshire for my group.
