Hi again, Phil Re my earlier message, I meant to say that the birth of Christina Menni[e] Andrew was the only birth of a Christina Andrew registered in Scotland, not just Glasgow, in 1875-76. None in 1877. Rhoda
Hi Phil The following family appears (on Ancestry) in the 1871 Scottish Census living at 12 Gray's Lane (back), Glasgow Parkhead, Lanarkshire. John ANDREW, head, 33, born Paisley, Renfrewshire, Iron Foundry Mashter (sic) [I think this may be 'Master' and that he employed 60 men and 5 boys] Christina Andrew, wife, 34, born Aberdeen Elizabeth Andrew, daughter, 12, born Glasgow Anne Andrew, daughter, 4, born Glasgow David Andrew, son, 2, born Greenock, Renfrewshire George Andrew, son, 8 months, born Greenock, Renfrewshire I am unable to find them in the 1881 Scottish census, so this MAY be the family that went to Australia, although the ages of the parents conflict with those on the passenger list. The George ANDREW born in Greenock in 1870 (see 1871 Census above) was the son of John ANDREW and Christina MENNIE (I looked at the image of the birth registration on Scotlands People). So, the family in the 1871 Census above was that of John ANDREW and Christina MENNIE And a Christina Menni ANDREW is on the birth index of Scotlands People. The birth was registered in 1875 in the district of Camlachie, Glasgow. 'Menni' is how the name appears on the list, but may well be 'Mennie' on the Register, the image of which may be downloaded on the site. This Christina was the only Christina Andrew whose birth was registered in Glasgow in 1875 or 1876 so this seems to link the family who went to Australia to John ANDREW and Christina MENNIE. It still doesn't prove that your Ann was their daughter. Their Ann doesn't appear to have been registered with a middle name at birth. But people can adopt middle names later in life. Is the 'Miri' short for Miriam? Thanks Jim, I have now tracked it down. I should have looked more closely at the second "Note 72". Also, many thanks for your monumental effort in transcribing the registers. They are a great asset. That's me, Bob! And, by the way, today's Daily Telegraph (London edition) headlines with the news that the new Government is about to do away with the UK censuses - to save money. If it has its way, the 2011 census will be the last, apparently. Hi Bob Always worth checking out every line of research of course However the Mossbank Industrial School was for destitute children with no parents or the children of parents "living themselves in vice and profligacy, leave their offspring to grow up in ignorance or become vagrants and criminals" Do yours fit that bill? The Alexander in Canada, does he appear in the later Canadian census ? Crumbs now theres a posters name from the past The "Druid Princess" Remember it well, 1881 springs to mind :-) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) PS I think that post relates to just the 1881 census > You'll find info on the archive site. > http://news.rootsweb.com/th/read/LANARK/1999-06/0930031566 > > > Mossbank Industrial School > > > > > Linda
Hi Bob You don't say the time frame but I would think the Mitchell Library would be a good starting point That is assuming there are any surviving records Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hello List > > Does SKS know how to search the records for Mossbank Industrial School , > to find records of children and where they were sent to when they left the > school. > > > Thank you in Advance > > Bob

People are quite helpful there. http://www.britishhomechildren.org/ This website is constantly being updated with people adding more children, more "sending agencies," and more links to other groups and sources of information. Hope this is of some help and interest to you and any other Lanark list members who may be looking for a relation who was sent away in the UK child emigration scheme. Note however that BHC only refers to children sent to Canada. There are other groups and websites about child migrants sent to other former colonies. Sincerely, Carolyn (with a BHC ancestor who was sent out from a reformatory, and not one of the larger agencies).
Hello List I think that we have the wrong Rhoda . The Rhoda who sent the information to me was CandROverson , who signs her emails Rhoda . I remember the Druid Princess she sent me information over time on families I was searching in Lanarkshire. Bob
Hello Nivard I think Alexander fits the bill, His mother died of Syphyllis in New Monkland Workhouse on Oct 15 1859 she was a widow at the time , so Alexander would be an orphan at a very young age. He would have been under 5 at his mothers death. I have not checked the later Canadien Census ,I will have to check that also passenger records from Canada to Scotland Bob
Hello Nivard I am searching for the son of James Reid and Janet Hamilton the couple I was researching last week. Alexander Reid was born Lanarkshire abt 1857+- as when Rhoda found him in 1871 he was 13 in the Mossbank Industrial School. I have been reading about the children who were sent to Canada . I was looking on Family Search and found an Alexander Reid in Canada in 1881 occupation Engineer . When my Alexander marriedin 1883 his occupation was Engineers Driller, I was wondering if he had been sent to Canada by Quarriers Homes . After he married in 1883 my Alexander worked as a Coal miner in several places before staying in Polmont ,Stirlingshire. Thank you in Advance Bob
