Hi Margaret Although I cant help you much with these families, Bruce McCowan in Scarborough can probably fill in some of these names. He can be found by Googling his name. I used to have his email but lost it when the computer crashed. His family has been associated with ST. Andrews Pres. Church in Scarborough and the churchyard there has most of the pioneer settlers to Scarborough. I do know McCowans and Muirs were very prominent in early Scarborough history. Please let me know if I can help further as I grew up in that area and went to St. Andrews Church Cheers Julia Kenny Raleigh, North Carolina > ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marg Thompson" <margthom@xcelco.on.ca> To: <LANARK@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 25, 2010 3:36 PM Subject: [Lanark] WEIR,LEWARS > > Hi List, > > This is the first time I have posted to your list... > > Donâ?Tt know if you will be able to help or not. > > I am finally getting back to my husbandâ?Ts side of the family after > working > on mine for several years and am at a brick wall. > > My William WEIR married Mary LEWARS 19 Apr 1794 in Lesmahagow.> I > think William died 13 Aug 1827 and is buried at Linmill. > > I believe they emigrated to Scarborough, ONT in 1830. > > In my notes I have written that he was a farmer on Woodyett Farm in the > 1821 > Census. This was taken from the internet (one of many hits) after Googling the question - hope it helps. Lorraine. Australia. "It has long been the tradition for each visitor to a Jewish grave site to place a single stone on the monument. Seven such little stones can be seen on this one. As a child, when visiting his parent's graves, I asked my father why people left the stones. He said that it was to tell the visitors that followed that others had also visited the grave. When attending the unveiling of my Uncle Abe's grave monument, the officiating Rabbi provided an additional explanation that is a little more satisfying. When the tradition started, grave monuments were mounds of stones. Visitors added stones to "the mound" to show we are never finished building the monument to the deceased." ----- Original Message ----- From: ruth.enns@shaw.ca To: lanark@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, July 25, 2010 1:36 AM Subject: [Lanark] Sighthill Lair - attention Julia Kenny By the way, why do Jewish People leave stones/ pebbles on their relative's graves? Hi List, This is the first time I have posted to your list... Dont know if you will be able to help or not. Elizabeth married James TUDHOPE in Scotland and had 3 children; Mary, Elizabeth & Daniel & emigrated also to Scarborough. George married a Suzanna WILSON John married an Elizabeth HADDOW 21 Jan 1832 in Lesmahagow and had 6 children William married Margaret THOMSON in Moffat Scotland and had 2 children Mary married a James PATTON and had 4 children all born in Scarborough I believe James married a Janet MUIR in Scotland ? and had 13 children all born in Scarborough I believe Martha married a James McCOWAN and had 10 children Margaret I have no other information on her. I believe William WEIRs parents are James WEIR and Jean MARSHALL & he has 2 siblings John & Jane. I believe Mary LEWARS parents are John LEWARS & Jean SCOTT & she has 2 siblings Martha & William Any and all help will be appreciated. Margaret In Ontario, Canada

Good morning Listers, Since last posting my enquiry to the List regarding John Harvie CHRISTIE, Judge Advocate of Lanark, I have found out a little more information about him. In the Gentleman's Magazine for 1800 I found the death of his wife:- 1800 Obituary with Antidotes of Remarkable Persons- At Fitzroy-house, New Road, (London) of a decline in her 26th year, Mrs Gordon Christie, wife of Mr. John Harvie Christie of Edinburgh , advocate. I have also been informed that there was a daughter born to the couple, though I know nothing about her. John Harvie Christie was also arrested in France for spying. I am now hoping that SKS can help me with John's wife. I would appear that she was a GORDON, though I have not been able to find her first name. There is a suggestion that she maybe related to Sir Alexander Gordon of Earlstoun. Around 1813, John Harvie CHRISTIE, settled in Mauritius, where he became a land and slave owner. Any information about John's life in Scotland would be very much appreciated. Also, information about his wife Mrs Gordon Christie, who died at the very young age of 26 in 1800, (born circa 1774). I know this is not really a subject for the List but I think this scam message (which I too received) from Jean's Gmail address is being sent to people who have emailed Jean off-list, and whose email addresses will be in her computer's contact list. I have contacted Jean off-list on at least one occasion. Gmail users were subject to a phishing attack towards the end of last year. There may have been others since. It sounds as if Jean should contact Google asap, if she has not already done so. For details about the Gmail account 'Phishing' scam, see: http://www.hoax-slayer.com/gmail-phishing-scam.shtml. Please do not discuss spam on the list. The spam you referred to did not come from the list, it came directly from a list subscriber's account that has been compromised by outside sources, and it is using her address book to send more spam. I have taken the necessary steps to prevent it from reaching the list, so please do not discuss it further on the list. Discussion of spam on the list is not appropriate as some of you have already noted. I thank you for your cooperation. David E. Good morning Listers, I have joined the List hoping SKS can assist me with a John Harvie CHRISTIE, who became a Judge. John Harvie CHRISTIE was the son of John CHRYSTIE (CHRISTIE) and Susan (Susannah) HARVIE (HARVEY). John and Susan married in Glasgow, Lanarkshire on 26th January, 1766. Thier eldest son John Harvie CHRISTIE was born on 26th March 1768 in Carnath. John Harvie CHRISTIE was the second of five children, Elizabeth b. 1766, John Harvie b. 1768, Janet b. 1769, William b. 1772 and Thomas Christie b. 1774. Thomas the youngest of the family went on to become a Surgeon and studied at the University of Aberdeen, where he earned his Medical Degree. Thomas entered the service of the East India Co. He was a Surgeon in the Regiment at Trincomalee in 1797, Superintendant of the Military hospital and head of a small pox hospital, introducing the vaccination for smallpox in Ceylon in 1802. Thomas married Mary Isabell TOLFREY in Ceylon circa 1803 and they had 10 children, 7 boys and three girls. All the boys except one had distinguished Military careers. The eldest John Frederick CHRISTIE, became a Minister of the Church. Dr. Thomas CHRISTIE's eldest brother Judge John Harvie CHRISTIE went out to Mauritius in 1813. On the Slave Register of the former British Colonies, it states that John Harvie CHRISTIE had between 1 - 335 slaves and was still in Mauritius in 1826 owning a plantation. I know nothing further about John and I am hoping that someone on the List may know something about his life. If he married? If he did, who did he marry? Did they have children? Did he ever return to Scotland? Where and when did he die? Regards, Janice Belrose - Sydney Australia.
Julia: Checked out your Lair as requested, & found only a patch of green grass that my Lairs also offered up to me. Your rellie does have a nice neighbour, with a large celtic cross, if that is any consolation. One is lucky if an old grave even offers up an ancient weather beaten stone! My local grave attendant comes along with a pitch fork & stabs the area lest there is stone overgrown with grass. I found my film at the Mitchell unreadable, even the fellow who copies such information did not want to waste my money on such poor quality. Guess we can't win them all. By the way, why do Jewish People leave stones/ pebbles on their relative's graves? Do any of the Listers know? Ruth
Judging by the number of Listers who have written me in the 6 hours since my original posting, many (if not all) of you have received this scam message. I agree with the comments below. But I have never written Jean directly, nor have I given my e-mail address in my postings. The harvesting of e-mail addresses by the hacker must have been achieved directly on the List, somehow.
