Hi Bob et al, It would be interesting to know what took JCW's parents to Melitopol in Eastern Ukraine in 1892. There may have been a Scottish connection to the local engineering works. Around the same time, the Scottish thread maufacturers J&P Coats opened a huge thread mill near St Petersburg. From what little I know of the latter, the Tsarist Russian governemt had imposed huge tariffs on imported products in order to protect their own manufacturers, but the response of Coats and others like them was to open a Russian subsidairy and begin manufacturing there for the local market. Bob, do you know where JCW was based in Poland? Hi Ken, >From my reply to Nivard you will see what took James Cochrane Winning's parents to Russia. I have no idea where in Poland JCW was based. I only know that it was stated in the court case that he was a Vice Consul for the UK to Poland. Bob
Nivard, You are an absolute gem :-) The one you have got definitely looks like him. Yes I'm sure about the 1918 sailing (not 1925) as on the journey from New York to Liverpool onboard the Orduna James & Lillian gave the UK destination address as his fathers house at 46 Newlands Road, Glasgow, which incidentally was called Melitopol. I don't know when he ventured into the timber business. He was definately an Engineer. The whole family were into Mining/Mineral Boring/Mining Engineering There were 3 brothers involved in their own mineral boring business in Russia, 1853 Henry, 1857 William and 1863 James. I don't have any record of Henry being in Russia but his will states he had interests in Charkoff (Kharkoff), Russia William was married to Mary Cochrane and had 9 children. The first 3 were born in Glasgow and the other 6 in Russia, 3 in Melitopol (1 being James Cochrane Winning) and 3 in Kharkoff. James had 3 children all born in Kharkoff. The brothers were mentioned in an article "Notes on Russian Geology" in the September 1892 issue of The Geological Magazine. How and when James Cochrane Winning ended up in Poland is still a mystery to me and hopefully the Vice Consul lead will prove fruitful. At least I now know, thanks to you, where & when he died. I'll let you know if it's definately him but I'm sure it is. Once again many thanks Nivard Bob
Hi Bob Assuming the person is deceased, a name may help They would surely warrant a mention in the newspapers or Gazettes and may appear on passenger lists Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Can anyone on the list help me with this query? > > I have an ancestor who was a Vice Consul to Poland for the UK but cannot > find anywhere which lists consular personnel for Poland. > He left Poland in September 1939 just prior to WW2 aged 47. I wonder, too, that you would be able to find the information through the National Archives. Hi Nivard, Yes the person is deceased and his name was James Cochrane Winning. He was born in Melitopol in Russia on 1st oct 1892 to Scottish parents. I have him on shipping lists travelling from Yokohama, Japan to Vancouver then New York to Liverpool in 1918 (age 25) on his way back to Glasgow. From the shipping lists it would appear that he has married and he is travelling with his wife Lillian (surname unknown) who is English. He was able to read and write Russian. The next I have him is September 1945 when he was seriously injured in the Bourne End Rail Disater, Herts. He was enroute to Germany to take up a position with the Allied Control Commission in Germany as a Technical assistant in the timber department. He sued the railway company for damages and in the court papers it states he left Poland in September 1939 where he had operated a Timber Merchant business with assets of £120,000. It also stated in the court papers that he was Vice Consul to Poland for the UK. I have tried The National Archives but I just can't seem to find anything relating to consular staff to verify when and how long he was in Poland. -----Original Message----- From: Nivard Ovington <ovington1@sky.com> To: lanark@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 23 Aug 2010 15:24 Subject: Re: [Lanark] Vice Consul to Poland Hi Bob Assuming the person is deceased, a name may help They would surely warrant a mention in the newspapers or Gazettes and may ppear on passenger lists Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)

HI I wonder if there is anybody who could answer my question. I have obtained my g.grandfather's WW1 service record and he was sent for Court Martial for deliberately blowing off his own hand with a grenade. He was later given a war pension. It does not say in his records if he was found innocent or guilty. Would a soldier still get a pension if they were found guilty? Any thoughts on this matter, many thanks Julie
Can anyone on the list help me with this query? I have an ancestor who was a Vice Consul to Poland for the UK but cannot find anywhere which lists consular personnel for Poland. He left Poland in September 1939 just prior to WW2 aged 47. I do not know when he went to Poland. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bob

If you go to the Baird Message Board (you don't have to register), search their archives there are several posts on this family, perhaps they might help. Lili, Hmmm, no bell rung there, but I have an Elizabeth Baird, b. 1813 in Dumfries, who married in Bothwell, Lanark, on March 15, 1834, William Muir, b. Feb. 10, 1801 in Campsie, Stirling. They sailed for Upper Canada in either 1838 or 1839. Unfortunately I have no parents for Elizabeth. Good hunting, Cliff. Thank you! I found Sword Street (in Dennistoun district) here. It is not illustrated in the Mitchell Library virtual catalogue and so I thought it must have disappeared. Just found it now on google maps. The street view seems to show the house my James Steel Wharrie lived in 1900 (row of reddish sandstone buildings). At least I think this is the case. The district seems to be undergoing gentrification now, but the Ordnance Survey shows iron works and pottery manufacturers nearby. I appreciate that this question will only apply to a smallish number of members of the list but I would be interested in exchanging on or off list information about the Earlier Burgesses and Guild Brethren of Glasgow i.e. those before 1650. I have got to the stage that I have ancestors who were Burgesses in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen in the period 1550-1650 and from the recurrence of names, suspect they may in some cases in fact have been intermarried. In Glasgow the names are Lintoune/Listoune; Muirhead; Aitkenhead and Winning In Edinburgh the names are Pargillies; Brown(e); Calder; Nemo and Kirkwood In Aberdeen the names are Mitchell; Broun and Stot Regards, Mark
