There are a number of stones in Carmichael Kirkyard which record people who died at Pretts Mill or Prets Mill. There are none which say Pratts Mill. Janet
Hi All: I must have missed a posting regarding Pretts Mill I know it fits into my family tree somehow. Nivard can you please send me off line the Newspaper entry that you referred to. For the life of me I cannot find having received it. In any event I found Pretts Mill on Explorer 335 Lanark & Tinto Hills (Lesmahagow & Douglas). It is located on the Clyde River just prior to where Douglas Water drains into the Clyde. If the crow flew straight across from Carmichael to Lanark Pretts Mill would be very close to ½ way. I do not know but the way the map looks it could have been operated from a watercourse off the Clyde. If you Google Pretts Mill it might ask did you mean Pratts Mill, however if you Google Pretts Mill Scotland it will take you to a considferable amount of information. Pratts Mill evidently was the center of a small skirmish in the American Revolution. Obviously not the same place. Janet, where might I find a list of the stones in the Carmichael Kirkyard relating to Pretts Mill? Thanks. I am still scratching my head on where in cyberspace that posting went Thanks to everyone and sorry to be a bother on this. Frank Easton Sherwood Park Alberta +16c
I can't say, Nirvard .... it could be a 'pronunciation' difference - I'd go by the Ordnance Survey Map name .... But these things are not uknown to happen !! The Mill is still standing - it is a listed building. The waterwheel is in a poor state, and I don't know about the machinery ( but I will enquire ... ) There was at least a 'partial' use as a house ... but that may not be the mill, and simply the adjoining buildings / existing house ... (from) The Edinburgh Advertiser 1810 3 August FARMS TO LET The following Farms, belonging to the Right Hon. Lord DOUGLAS, and situated in the parishes of Douglas, Carmichael, Lesmahagow, and county of Lanark, fall out of lease at Martinmas 1811, and will be let for such a number of years as may be agreed on. In the Parish of Douglas. DYKEHEAD FARM - As at present in the possessed by James WILSON, measures 460 Scots acres, of which 50 acres are arable, and the remainder sheep pasture. BROWNFIELD - Contains 130 acres of arable land, and 7 acres of moss. This farm is in the immediate neighbourhood of coal and lime, and may be much improved. In the Parish of Carmichael. DYKES FARM - At present in the possession of Robert DIXON, measures 81 acres one rood, and 9 falls, good arable land. WATCHKNOWS - Possesses by the heirs of John KENNEDY, measures 78 acres, 1 rood, and 3 falls, good arable land. If they are laid together they will make one of the most valuable farms in this part of the country. The soil is light and dry, well adapted to turnip husbandry, particularly to the feeding off turnips with sheep, which has lately been practiced in the neighbourhood with considerable advantage. THE TOWNSHIP OF DRUMALBEN - Consists of the Following Farms and Pendicles, separately possessed by different tenants; but the houses are all placed together, & from the village, or, as it is called the Township of Drumalben. CAREFIELD - Is possessed by Wm LAMB, and measures 87 acres, 3 roods, and 22 falls, dry arable and meadow land. NORTH FARM - is possessed by Wm LAMB, and measures 45 acres, 1 rood, and 9 falls, dry arable and meadow land. The Lands of Drumalben will be divided into Farms to suit the views of those who wish to become tenants. The soil is in general dry and kindly; the lands abound with stones fit for building dykes, and, when enclosed, and the turnip husbandry introduced, good returns may be expected. PRATTS MILN - With 35 acres 3 roods 1 fall, of excellent land, is situated on the south bank of the river Clyde, about two miles below Hyndford Bride, well worth the attention of a miller & farmer. The FARM of WOODLANDS - Of which Jas. LIDDLE is tenant, consists of 51 acres of croft, 4 acres of meadow, and 13 1/2 acres of outfield, arable, and pasture land. DRUMALBEN HILLHEAD - Is in the possession of John SANDYLANDS, and measures 120 1/2 acres, of arable land, and 33 1/2 acres of pasture. EASTERTOUN WESTER - Is part of the Barony of Castlehill, of which James GREENSHIELDS is tenant; it contains A. R. F. 41 1 29 of good old croft land. 54 0 25 arable 14 1 32 pasture and 21 1 27 flow moss. -------------- 134 1 24 EASTERTOUN EASTER - Joins the last, and is possessed by James BROWN; it measures A. R. Offers in writing may be given in. from this time to the 1st of September next, to Messrs. WEMYSS and WALKER, Writers to the Signet, George Street. Edinburgh; or to Campbell DOUGLAS; at Castle Mains, near Douglas Mill, who will show the plans, and treat for new tacks, building houses, inclosing the Farms, & c. & c. James AFFLECK, the Baron Officer, residing at Barnhill, will show the Farms, and point out the marches. Hi Stuart, I don't have any experience with recent records, but I did find this article. Wish I could be of more help ------Sue [INS: :INS] l Do records exist for immigrants who came on planes? Expert answers for your genealogical questions. Q. Are there [1]immigration records for people who flew to the United States? A. Because commercial trans-Atlantic air travel didnât begin until after the restrictive Immigration Act of 1924, airplane passenger records typically arenât an important source for [2]genealogists. If your ancestor did arrive by air, however, you can use NATF Form 81 from the National Archives <[3]archives.gov/genealogy/immigration> to order copies of inbound federal passenger arrival manifests for airplanes, just as with ships, through 1959. Microfilmed airport-arrival records available from the National Archives include San Pedro/Los Angeles, Miami, Milwaukee, Houston, Seattle, Baltimore and Portland, Ore.âdates vary. Another tactic is to explore [4]visa records. Before immigrants touch down in the United States, they must already have an immigrant visa from the US Citizenship and [5]Immigration Services (USCIS). The agencyâs Genealogy Program includes visa files from July 1, 1924, to March 31, 1944. An index search of these and other records costs $20, while copies of the record cost $20 to $35. On <[6]www.uscis.gov>, click on Genealogy, the last item in the left side of the home page. Visa records generally are richer than the bare-bones passenger arrival manifests; the USCIS records may contain the personâs places of residence for the past five years, names of both parents and more. Attached to the visa file may be [7]birth records or affidavits, as well as marriage, military or police records. You can request post-1944 visa files under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Write to US Citizenship and Immigration Services, National Records Center, FOIA/PA Office, Box 648010, Leeâs Summit, MO 64064. Be sure to write âFOIA Requestâ on the envelope and your letter. Donât send moneyâmost FOIA requests donât require fees, but they can take months to get a reply.
