    3. Hi Bob, I have been following the messages about the Vice Consul to Poland. Although I have nobody in a similar position I thought that this might be of interest. Simon Forrest was born at Crawfordjohn in 1825. He became a teacher and eventually retired to Newport in Fife. He had a son, also Simon, whose occupation was variously - ship broker, secretary, shipping agent. In a 1908 Dundee Directory I found that Simon, junior, was the Swedish Consul in Dundee. In 1925 he was the German Consul and the Swedish Vice Consul. I had presumed that these were honourary posts but perhaps not. Any thoughts on this are welcome. Janet

    1. Re: [Lanark] Vice Consul to Poland
    2. Hi Nivard, As promised the outcome was that yes this is my man. Thank you very much. The informant of the death was his "nephew" who was born in Glasgow in 1918 at a private maternity clinic. He was the son of JCW's brother-in-law, who was married in Moscow and he also was a Mining Engineer. So this opens up another Russian conundrum to be investigated but it looks like they got out of Russia at about the same time as JCW. At least we now know JCW's wifes maiden surname. I've still to find out anything about the Vice Consul part but as Ken said in his reply, he could have been some sort of quasi-official. Perhaps the Vice Consul part was put into the court case to crank up the compensation being sought for the rail crash. If anyone on the list knows of where info on ex Consular/Embassy staff can be founf I'd greatly appreciate it. As you said Nivard, a very elusive chap Once again, many thanks. -----Original Message----- From: Nivard Ovington <ovington1@sky.com> To: lanark@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 23 Aug 2010 17:40 Subject: Re: [Lanark] Vice Consul to Poland Hi Bob An elusive chap it seems I take it you are sure the 1925 sailing is definitely he? The Cowan side, (my own link), were found in Toronto in the 1911 census after having two+ children born in Scotland, two+ further were born in York (Toronto), Ontario in 1913 and 1915. Alan I spotted the name Frood in your post Frank and wondered if you or any other LANARK posters had done much research into this family. Your post reminded me of one of my lines where my research has not yet been too successful. My own surname is Robertson - originally from Fochabers. My husband's Smiths were from Perth. But I did have problems with one of my Lanarkshire Callans. In 1837 Jane Callan & James Whyte had a son James Whyte. When he married his father was stated as 'landed proprietor' - he was James Whyte of Neuk, Lesmahagow.
