How could I access the Kirk Sessions records from the US ? I am interested in the birth of a James Wallace later called James Black born 1844-45 in Fife ? I had a look in the International Genealogical Index at www.familysearch.org. There is only one William Naylor listed in Scotland; he was married in Edinburgh in 1807. There are no children listed of a John Naylor and Nora (or Eleanor) anywhere in Scotland, no marriages of a John Naylor to a Nora, an Eleanor or a Buchanan, and no William with mother Nora or Eleanor between 1861 and 1871 in Scotland. I also looked at the birth indexes on Scotland's People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and there are no William Naylors born in Scotland between 1861 and 1871. I also checked the 1881 census on CD-ROM and there are no William Naylors listed who were born in Scotland between 1861 and 1871. So, if your man was born in Glasgow around 1866, William Naylor was not his birth name. Either he invented a Glasgow origin, or he changed his own name and parents' names at some point. I suggest that your only way of finding anything at all would be through the Merchant Navy records which I believed were held in the UK National Archives at Kew, London http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ They don't undertake research themselves - you would either have to go there yourself or (probably cheaper and more efficient for you!) hire a professional searcher who knows his/her way around the archives. However see http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=129 which suggests that some of the information may be in the National Archives of Australia, and some in the Maritime History Museum in Newfoundland, Canada http://www.mun.ca/mha/ Anne

Hi Kathryn, I recently discovered HOGGs in my tree. ;-) The earliest so far is Thomas HOGG born about 1788 married Janet STIRLING born about 1789. Their son Walter born 1808 married Janet HARVEY, the sister of my gg grandmother Agnes. They had 10 children. There are a lot of Ancestry hints that I haven't looked into yet.
