    2. Hi Marie, Peter LIDDLE and Katherine WALLACE are my fourth great grandparents, and I'm descended from their daughter Janet. Hello cousin ;-) I've just been working on Peter's family and would gratefully accept any help you can give me. I just found Robina LIDDLE in Utah yesterday so this has been quite a rewarding weekend. I look forward to hearing from you. I'm in New York, by the way. 2. Hi - Peter and Katherine Wallace Liddle are my fifth gr grandparents. I have quite a lot of information on this line if you would like to have it. I have listed as their children: Janet b. 12 Oct 1786; Mary b. 16 Apr 1789; Peter Liddle b. 3 May 1793; and John Wallace b 28 Jul 1795. This information came from the original documents as researched by another Liddle relative located in Edinburgh. I'm descended from their son, Peter. Marie Beeman Raper Canby OR USA lmraper@aol.com

I think you may have overlooked another relevant scrap of evidence, which is that John Purdie and Janet Liddle had a daughter Catherine, born 1807. Under the traditional naming pattern, if Janet Liddle's parents' names were Peter and Catherine, you would expect her eldest daughter to be named Catherine and her second son to be named Peter. It looks as if this might have been the case here. In which case it strengthens already fairly strong evidence that Janet Liddle, wife of John Purdie, and Janet Liddle, daughter of Peter Liddle and Catherine Wallace, are indeed one and the same. I answered this post from Anne off list, but then thought it might help other researchers who are new to the list if I explained what I did and why I shouldn't have done it. Even though I typed the name LIDDLE wrong twice, the fact remains that I went over and over my post to try to keep it as concise and streamlined as possible. I didn't want it to seem too rambling or confusing for anyone who was reading it. In doing so I left out important pieces of information that would have helped anyone trying to help me. As a result, Anne and anyone else who wanted to answer had to look up that information themselves. New motto: Never assume and tell them everything you know! Jeanne

    3. Hi Duncan Have you looked for any of these people in the 1911 England census? You say that you cannot find their marriages or deaths in Scotland or England, but how can you be certain without looking at every marriage or death certificate for, for example, a John Mackenzie of a suitable age? His middle names may not have been used in his marriage or death registrations. A search on the Scotlands People death index for a John Mackenzie born 1881 +/- 1 produced over 100 results. Looking for a needle in a haystack comes to mind. I had a look for a John D B Mackenzie born 1881, Glasgow, on Ancestry's passenger lists between 1901 and 1920. I haven't found any John D B Mackenzies but have found 2 possibilities named John Mackenzie: John Mackenzie, 24. labourer, born Glasgow and whose last place of residence was in Glasgow, on the SS Caledonia from Glasgow to New York in May 1905. His final destination was Montreal. He didn't give the name of friend or relative in Canada, and: John Mackenzie, 24, surveyor, on the SS Caledonia to New York in June 1906. He was making his way to North Greece, New York and gave his brother Alexander of The Christian Parsonage in Greece, New York as his relative in the US. This is unlikely to be him as he gave his last place of residence as Ross. Unfortunately, Ancestry doesn't have many UK-Australia passenger lists for the period of interest to you. The 1911 Scotland census will hopefully be online in about 6 months time. That and/or the 1911 England census may give you some of the answers. 2. Those first two RIDDLEs should have been LIDDLEs, as I'm sure you've guessed. And that was after proofreading. Twice! I also sent this to the wrong address but only once. Thanks again. Jeanne

    1. [Lanark] A LIDDLE problem
    2. Hi all, I'm trying to prove that Janet RIDDLE born 1786 in Carnwath is the same Janet RIDDLE who married John PURDIE born about 1787. Here's what I've got: Peter LIDDLE and Catherine WALLACE had 2 children, Janet born 1786 and Peter born 1793, both in Carnwath. Janet LIDDLE married John PURDIE and their children were born in Carnwath. Only one, Peter PURDIE born 1810, is relevant to my question. He married Elizabeth ALLAN in Carnwath and they had 4 children, John born 1836, Margaret born 1840, James born 1841, and Catherine born 1844. Catherine died in 1848, and the Census of 1851 shows father Peter PURDIE with 2 children, James and Margaret. Elizabeth isn't listed I can't find her anywhere else. The other son, John PURDIE born 1836, is found living with the Peter LIDDLE family. As it turns out this Peter LIDDLE is the brother of Janet LIDDLE. Is this enough evidence to say this is the right Janet? It's the only Janet LIDDLE I can find, who was born at the right time and in the right place. The birth date would fit with the births of her children and she's the only Janet LIDDLE born in Carnwath where a lot of the story seems to take place. It seems like more than a coincidence that John PURDIE is living with a LIDDLE family, and that the head of said family is Peter, the brother of the Janet I'm trying to verify. I can't find any other records to prove or disprove my theory. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated----especially if you agree ;-) Thanks. Jeanne

    3. Dear All, I am back again after a few years with a bit more information on my "Brick Wall" Alexander MacKenzie, son of James MacKenzie and Elizabeth Gray was born 1941 in Dunblane, Perthshire Scotland.(1881 census) He married Mary McArthur 13 Nov 1886 in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire (marriage certificate, parents confirmed) He died 23 Sep 1902 in Bradford, Yorkshire Mary died 12 Feb 1895 in Bradford, Yorkshire They had 8 children: James b. 11 Mar 1869 Hutchesontown died 11 May 1870 Hutchesontown *Christina b. 10 Sep 1870 Hutchesontown* James b. 4 Mar 1872 Hutchesontown died 18 Jan 1937 in Hillhead married Elizabeth Morrison 1 Aug 1898 in Hutchesontown Duncan MacArthur b. 7 Feb 1874 died 27 May 1924 in Bradford, Yorkshire, married Elizabeth Ann Wild 25 Dec 1895 in Bradford Alexander b. 28 Mar 1878 in Hutchesontown *John Drummond Benton b. 16 Mar 1881 in Hutchesontown* Eliza Gray b. 2 May 1884 in Hutchesontown died 14 Dec 1946 in Shettleston. Married John Verner 21 Jun 1912 in Shettleston *William b. 3 Jul 1886 in Hutchesontown* ** Alexander and Mary brought their family to Bradford, Yorkshire between 1886 and 1891. When both parents died by 1902, their children split up. 4 of them came back to Scotland, 3 of which got married. *John Drummond Benton* is the 4th, he is found in the 1901 census living with Brother James and family in Glasgow. He never marries in Scotland or England and I cannot find a death in either. *Christina *is last seen on 1901 census in Bradford, Looking after father, Eliza Gray and William, again, no marriage or death in Scotland or England *Alexander *is last seen on 1891 census in Bradford age 13, I cannot find a marriage or death in Scotland or England *William *is last seen on 1901 census in Bradford age 15, I cannot find a marriage or death in Scotland or England Their Nephew, Duncan MacArthur Mackenzie born 1910 in Bradford, ended up in Australia, and that is my only possible clue as to where they might have gone. Another source thinks that one of them may have gone to Canada. If you have any ideas how I can progress, please let me know Thanks for your time. I hope to hear from someone soon. Duncan

    3. > How could I access the Kirk Sessions records from the US ? You can't do so directly. They are in the National Archives of Scotland, and though they have been digitised there is no index and they are not available online. You would need to get someone to go to the National Archives in person to search for and print off or transcribe any references to your James Wallace. That is, assuming that there are any. There are links to lists of professional searchers on the Scotland's People and National Archives of Scotland web sites. Best wishes Anne

    3. Hi Carol and Anne I found William Naylor on someone's tree on Ancestry born 1865, Glasgow, but with no source for the birth. He married Marie (Pearl) Maude Agnes Elliott in Balmain, NSW in 1903. It's quite possible that he took x years off his age when he married. After all who would know? I had a look on Scotlands People and found the birth registration of only 1 William Naylor in Scotland between 1855 and 1866. His birth was registered in Glasgow in 1855. Unfortunately I have have run out of SP credits and there is a problem with their Payment Gateway today, so I couldn't buy more credits to view the image to check the names of the parents. But I think I found that William on the 1861 Scottish Census on Ancestry and the parents didn't match (they were Joseph and Jean). I couldn't find a family headed by John and Norah Naylor in any of the 1871 UK censuses. His birth may have been registered as William Buchanan if he was born before his parents married. Rhoda
