Hi Rosemary, I was on holiday when you sent you message to the LKS List & haven't got round to putting in my bit till now. My 3xgt-grandfather, James CUTHBERTSON, seems to have owned 2 or 3 properties in Kaimend, according to the inventory after his death in 1880, as he received rent from two houses and the Sunday School. I'm afraid I don't really know more than that. I do have a Helen BAIRD further back in my ancestry thereabouts; also a Marion MARTIN. If your SMITHs tie in with CUTHBERTSON or TENNANT at all, I may be able to help. Best wishes, Sheena Ireland -----Original Message----- Hello Listers I'm trying to trace the family history of a 90 year-old aunt whose father & grandfather were both named Thomas GRAHAM. Generations of her family lived in Carnwath & Kaimend (which had various spellings in the censuses over the decades). Please can anyone tell me more about these places - was Kaimend a hamlet? As I'm in Western Australia I have no concept of the geography of these places. I've trawled the IGI & purchased some death certificates from the GRO, but does anyone have access to PR's, burial records or monumental inscriptions for Carnwath? Related families that lived in that village were GRAHAM, KIDD, BAIRD, SMITH. I'm also interested in THOMSONs from Walston (this aunt has a Sampler worked in 1809 by her great grandmother Elizabeth THOMPSON, daughter of Thomas & Margaret nee DEANS or DEON.) Thankyou in hope Rosemary
Hi all, first time posting in this newsgroup. With the help of my cousin in Fife we've traced our MAXWELL ancestors back to Glasgow: John MAXWELL (1699-, Glasgow) m Jenet Wark | John MAXWELL (1721-, Glasgow) m Janet Brown | Andrew MAXWELL (1748-1781, Glasgow) m Mary Wodrow (1745-1781) | William MAXWELL (1779-1847, Glasgow) m. 1 Agnes Black in Glasgow m. 2 Elizabeth Inglis in Cults, Fife seeking any connections. Anyone seen these names, especially in connection with the MAXWELLs of Pollock? Stephen Maxwell

Thank you to all the kind people who replied. I think I will try the 14 day free trial. Thank you every one Margaret Ontario Subject: Ancestry Does anyone use Ancestry U.K.?? Any thoughts on it.? Is there much Scottish information? Thanks Margaret Ont
Hi Margaret One of the main things for Scotland on Ancestry is the 1841 to 1901 census transcription (images are not allowed by the powers that be in Scotland) Its transcription is a tad wavy at times but the search engine more than makes up for it as its fully transcribed which allows say all those named BARR living in a XXXX Street for example or all Blacksmiths in Renfrewshire Using the transcription you can usually find and track your people through the census years, then use that to obtain the census images from SP (I would always advocate obtaining the images as there are usually extra details at the very least) However there are many more avenues to explore such as the Probate Calendars 1861 to 1941, although its the National Probate Calendars for England and Wales there are many Scots who died with assets in England (a simple search for Scotland gets over 109,000 hits, many of which will be people who died in Scotland but there are many Scots listed too) For example my g.g.grandfather who lived and died in Scotland is listed as follows SMITH Alexander William (commonly known as Alexander) 29th August 1891 The confirmation of the Commisariot of Renfrew dated 19 August 1891 of David Smith the son and Thomas Struthers Smith the Nephew as surviving Executors Nominate of Alexander William Smith commonly known as Alexander Smith Merchant of Crofthead House Langside near Glasgow who died at Langside 14 July 1891 Sealed. (I already had his death and will from Scotland but if I had not it would be very useful information) Some of Ancestrys databases need a little coaxing out like the trade directories , for Scotland they have the following Directory * 1825-6 Pigot's Directory, Central * 1825-6 Pigot's Directory, Central East * 1825-6 Pigot's Directory, Combined * 1825-6 Pigot's Directory, Highlands * 1825-6 Pigot's Directory, Southern * 1825-6 Pigot's Directory, Southern Highlands * 1837 Pigots National Commercial Directory * 1870 Post Office Directory of Glasgow * 1893 Slaters Directory of Edinburgh and Glasgow * 1893 Slaters Directory of Scottish Counties * 1921 Slaters Directory of Scottish Counties * 1925 Post Office Directory of Aberdeen * 1893 Slaters Directory of Edinburgh and Glasgow * 1893 Slaters Directory of Scottish Counties * 1921 Slaters Directory of Scottish Counties * 1925 Post Office Directory of Aberdeen Then there are the various Criminals databases , many Scots are recorded Then there are the Military records which record many Scots in the British Army (medals, service records etc) And the list goes on I would suggest a trial (either a 14 day free one or use a Library that has it) and see what you find If you enter Ancestry and select card catalogue from the Search menu, enter Scotland and you will see there are many more databases that may be of interest As with any online data supplier, it will suit some more than others Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) Does anyone use Ancestry U.K.?? Any thoughts on it.? Is there much Scottish information? Thanks Margaret Ont

Morning all, As Listowner of the Caithness List I ran a chat about Ancestry a few weeks ago when I took out the 2-week free trial. Frankly if your main areas of research are Scotland, I would try the free trial but probably then spend the £108 on 18 blocks of credits at Scotland's People. Ancestry does not have access to original images in Scotland found on Scotland's People and it is actually pretty hopeless for Scottish research earlier than the 1841 census. It does give access to the original images for the English Cenci from 1841 to 1901 and some baptism and marriage stuff for some parts of England, mainly London. It will give information on other English baptisms, deaths and marriages but no access to any actual original images and it doesn't have access to the original images for births, deaths or marriages in England from 1837 when they started in England. You can order up copies of the original certificates at Ancestry at almost £30 a go whereas ordering them directly from the English equivalent of New Register House costs just under £10 a go. Compared to Scotland's People where an original certificate can be downloaded for £2 and each search costs 40 pence per page of results, we are incredibly spoiled in Scotland. Where Ancestry is really good is for people in North America because being an American company, understandably it's main thrust is the American market. It also has a lot of stuff on WWI and other military things like the Napoleonic Wars. Since this is the Lanark list, obviously many of the people reading this email will have ancestors who migrated from Ireland to Scotland. The Ancestry stuff is not yet very good on Ireland. I haven't been able to trace any of my Irish ancestors on Ancestry yet but then mine all pre date 1800 and Ancestry doesn't really have much pre 1800 anywhere in the UK. I swithered but decided not to cancel my subscription because I have several lines of English ancestry starting with my main direct male line and within 3 or 4 days of being on Ancestry had identified 2 hitherto unknown generations in 2 lines down there. I appreciate others will have a very different opinion but as someone with no personal interest in North America or anyone who migrated to the USA, its vast amount of information on the USA is of absolutely no interest to me whatsoever. > Does anyone use Ancestry U.K.?? No. I use Ancestry.com occasionally when I am in a library or similar where I can do so for free. > Any thoughts on it.? Is there much Scottish information? There is quite a bit of information, but little of it is original material. The indexes are useful for finding people in the census, but you can't view the originals. Also you can't access birth, marriage and death certificates for any part of the UK - only the indexes. Scotland's People is THE source for Scottish records. You can view actual images of the surviving original baptisms/banns/burials, the statutory civil certificates of birth, marriage and death to their respective cut-off dates, and of the census from 1841 to 1901. As you are going to have to view the originals anyway to verify them, there's not a lot of point in looking at Ancestry, apart from the census indexes. Before you look on Ancestry for the early census, check that the ones you want have not been transcribed on FreeCen. Anne
I have found it quite useful for building a Scottish family tree - but you will sometimes have to use Scottish records directly. Hi Jeanne, I have no connection to the Liddle Family but your post did ring some bells. Years ago I had been looking into the Wilsons of Wilsontown fame for a genealogical project and came across a Liddle connection. Turns out I have an extensive folder (long forgotten) on the Liddle's of Gress Farm, Isle of Lewis to Nampa, Idaho, USA. Maybe you better contact me direct ;-) Regards billy
