We have the information as posted but at present don't have copies of the actual certs. in our hands. And yes I know not to post on living persons, a rule I adhere to. If anyone had information on living relations I would hope their reply was privately to my email address. Regards Jenny

If you have her marriage and death certificates, you must have the names of her parents? Or is it just her descendants you are trying to find? John Joseph's death certificate will tell you the name of his wife, if any, and may be signed by one of his children. Don't forget that posting information about living people isn't permitted on Rootsweb. Anne

    2. Andrew PURDIE b. 1766 and Janet CLELAND b. about 1764 had 2 children, John b.1788 and Emelia b.1790. On the birth record of nine of the ten children, grandmother Annipal is some variation of Annipal but on the record I just found for Thomas b. 1761 she is Emilia Annapale. Does this make it more likely that Andrew and Janet are cousins? Thanks. Jeanne

    3. Dear Wilma I had a few spare credits to spend on Scotlands People. so no need for you to send payment. Glad to be of help. Elizabeth Hardie was 39 when she married Robert Porter, so I suppose there is always a chance that she and Robert didn't have any children. Any they did have would likely have been born within about 10 years of their marriage, and in Glasgow (where they were married and where Elizabeth died). 220 PORTER births were registered in all districts of Glasgow between 1925 and 1935. If you wanted to pursue that line you would probably have to hire a researcher to plough through these births in the Scottish archives in Edinburgh. Best wishes Rhoda

    3. Hello Wilma I have found a few records that may help you in your search. Robert HARDIE, Agnes's brother, died at Loos, France on 25 September 1915. He has no known grave but is commemorated on Panel 108 to 112 on the Loos Memorial at Pas de Calais, northern France. He was a Private in the 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. That information is found on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site at: http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=1764677 His next of kin is named on the site as his sister, Mrs Elizabeth PORTER, of 135, North Street, Whiteinch, Scotstoun, Glasgow. Elizabeth McCarthur HARDIE married Robert Henry PORTER on 4 July 1925 at 21 Hope Street, Glasgow. Her parents, James HARDIE and Elizabeth MCINTOSH, were both deceased at the time of her marriage. (Eliz MCINTOSH died in Glasgow in 1901). Elizabeth McCarthur HARDIE died in Glasgow in 1948 aged 62. Her husband died in Killearn, Stirling in 1954 aged 68. His death certificate would give you his address at time of death, and the name and address of the informant, as well as the relationship to the deceased. I downloaded Elizabeth Hardie's marriage certificate from the Scotlands People website and will send that to you offlist. Elizabeth's death certificate and Robert Porter's death certificate may also be downloaded from the same site. See: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It is a pay site. 1. [Lanark] PURDIE problem
    2. Hi all, I have a tangled mess and hope someone can help me untangle it. Following my ggg grandfather John PURDIE's line back from his birth in 1888 in Carnwath, I found this information on the LDS sites: John PURDIE b. about 1705 married Janet ELDER b. 1709 Carnwath Their children were all born in Carnwath: Mary b. 1730 John b. 1733 Annipal b. 1735 Andrew b. 1737 Robert b. 1739 Son John PURDIE b. 1733 married Janet BRADWOOD b. about 1735 Their children were all born in Carnwath: Jane b. 1758 Robert and John b. 1760 Andrew b. 1766 Jane b. 1768 Daughter Annipal PURDIE b. 1735 married James CLELAND b. about 1725 Their children were all born in Carnwath with the exception of Mary, born in Canongate. Mary b. 1758 John b. 1759 James b. 1763 Janet b. 1764 Andrew b. 1676 William b. 1773 Ann b. 1777 Christian b. 1779 I just found the above information about Annipal today, and until today I only knew that my gggg grandfather Andrew PURDIE b. 1766 married Janet CLELAND b. about 1765. I had no other CLELAND reference. So this could be a case of cousins marrying, or it could be a coincidence since there are a few other Janet CLELANDs born about the same time. Some of the entries give a spouse's name and can be ruled out, but some don't. How can I figure this out? Thanks in advance. Jeanne

    3. Hi Rhoda, Thank you so very much for all the information you sent me in an e-mail. That's wonderful I now know Agnes's sisters married name.  That was so kind of you to download Elizabeth Hardie's Marriage Certificate.  I hope I wont offend you, can I send you the cost of this Certificate?. I am just so grateful to have gotten information on this family. Also,Thank you so very much for the information on Robert Hardie.  Really sad... My poor relative in Australia. She has been wondering if there were any Hardie's from her Mother's Family left in Scotland as she knows nothing about them.. She searched for years (1930's on) looking for her M(a)cNeils and all the letters were returned "not at this address". My Aunt in Scotland gave me her address a number of years ago and I contacted her and she was over the moon to have found someone from the Family she had been looking for all these years. She's a wonderful 94 - soon to be 95year old Lady who would love to know more about her background - that is why I am trying to help her With wonderful people like yourself, and a wonderful List I am surely making progress with these Hardie's. So so grateful for your help in making this lovely Lady feel part of a Family. Warmest regards, Wilma - Canada

I hope someone can identify with this Family - it would be much appreciated if you do and contact me. 3. Thanks Nivard, I am looking forward to getting 'dug in'. Looks like I could be busy. Cheers  Margaret ----- Original Message ---- From: Nivard Ovington <ovington1@sky.com> To: lanark@rootsweb.com Sent: Tue, September 28, 2010 12:09:10 PM Subject: Re: [Lanark] Ancestry Hi Margaret One of the main things for Scotland on Ancestry is the 1841 to 1901 census transcription (images are not allowed by the powers that be in Scotland) Its transcription is a tad wavy at times but the search engine more than makes up for it as its fully transcribed which allows say all those named BARR living in a XXXX Street for example or all Blacksmiths in Renfrewshire Using the transcription you can usually find and track your people through the census years, then use that to obtain the census images from SP (I would always advocate obtaining the images as there are usually extra details at the very least) However there are many more avenues to explore such as the Probate Calendars 1861 to 1941, although its the National Probate Calendars for England and Wales there are many Scots who died with assets in England (a simple search for Scotland gets over 109,000 hits, many of which will be people who died in Scotland but there are many Scots listed too) For example my g.g.grandfather who lived and died in Scotland is listed as follows SMITH Alexander William (commonly known as Alexander) 29th August 1891 The confirmation of the Commisariot of Renfrew dated 19 August 1891 of David Smith the son and Thomas Struthers Smith the Nephew as surviving Executors Nominate of Alexander William Smith commonly known as Alexander Smith Merchant of Crofthead House Langside near Glasgow who died at Langside 14 July 1891 Sealed. (I already had his death and will from Scotland but if I had not it would be very useful information) Some of Ancestrys databases need a little coaxing out like the trade directories , for Scotland they have the following Directory     * 1825-6 Pigot's Directory, Central     * 1825-6 Pigot's Directory, Central East     * 1825-6 Pigot's Directory, Combined     * 1825-6 Pigot's Directory, Highlands     * 1825-6 Pigot's Directory, Southern     * 1825-6 Pigot's Directory, Southern Highlands     * 1837 Pigots National Commercial Directory     * 1870 Post Office Directory of Glasgow     * 1893 Slaters Directory of Edinburgh and Glasgow     * 1893 Slaters Directory of Scottish Counties     * 1921 Slaters Directory of Scottish Counties     * 1925 Post Office Directory of Aberdeen     * 1893 Slaters Directory of Edinburgh and Glasgow     * 1893 Slaters Directory of Scottish Counties     * 1921 Slaters Directory of Scottish Counties     * 1925 Post Office Directory of Aberdeen Then there are the various Criminals databases , many Scots are recorded Then there are the Military records which record many Scots in the British Army (medals, service records etc) And the list goes on I would suggest a trial (either a 14 day free one or use a Library that has it) and see what you find If you enter Ancestry and select card catalogue from the Search menu, enter Scotland and you will see there are many more databases that may be of interest As with any online data supplier, it will suit some more than others Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) Does anyone use Ancestry U.K.?? Any thoughts on it.? Is there much Scottish information?
