My family folk lore tells me that my Great Grandmother arrived in Scotland from Gounty Down when she was about 2 years old. Her name was Elizabeth McTear. The lore also said they arrived in Salcoats before they went to Glasgow. I found the family easily from 1881 onwards and after lots of guessing and searching I found them in Bridgetein Glasgow on the 1871 census but under the name or spelling Mattee. see below 1871 Census 24 Brown St Bridgeton James Mattee -40 Gas works labourer b -Ireland (note spelling of McTear) Sarah Mattee- 36 Elizabeth Mattee - 13 Agnes Matee - 7 I cannot access census information at the moment and would be obliged if anyone could help and see if they can find this family under any spelling of McTear, McTear , McTier , Mackateer etc in either Glasgow or Salcoats area on 1861 census.
Hello I am trying to find descendants of Robert and Sarah Jane Lindsay MacKay. They lived in Cambusnethan area in 1851. Their daughters married Browns, Renwick. Son Thomas was born about 1840. Lindsey
Thomas CRILLY a Labourer (Chemical) and Catherine BEGEN where married in February 1882 and they both gave their address as being Peter Street, Priv. Ho., Dundonald, Ayrshire that was witnessed by Bridget CLARK and James GRAHAM. Catherine's parents are listed as Thomas BEGEN and Bridget (nee CLARK), Thomas' parents are listed as Michael CRILLY and Alice(nee MILLIGAN). When researching the 1881 Census for Peter Street Priv. Ho. I find the following information: Thomas CLARK, Head, 46 years, Labourer (Chemical) born in Ireland. Bridget CLARK, Wife, 44 years born in Ireland. Michael CLARK, Son, 25 years, Labourer (Chemical) born in Ireland. Ann CASSIDY CLARK, Son's Wife, 22 years born in Ireland. John CLARK, Son (Grandson) 1 month born in Irvine, Ayr, Scotland. James CASSIDY, Lodger, Labourer (Chemical), 25 years born in Ireland. I have been unable to find a Thomas BEGEN on the 1881 Census and I believe that Thomas CLARK is actually Thomas BEGEN, is this possible. Any assistance, that anyone con give me would be appreciated. Thank you, John Pitt Meadows, BC, Canada.

I've only found out about this family recently so don't really know much about them. Previously I had been researching "Gilbert" and getting nowhere. But I will certainly take all of this advice into account. Many thanks. -----Original Message----- From: lanark-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:lanark-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of thomas mellan Sent: Sunday, 7 November 2010 7:30 PM To: lanark@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Lanark] PENMAN family In my own family tree research I found that my Aunt hand a middle name that was the Family name of a close friend of my Grand-Mother. I have previously used this mailing list in regard to a Mary GILBERT c1849 born Glasgow. Since then I have received information from the Glasgow Archives in regard to an Application for Relief, Glasgow City Parish. I have found a Mary Gilbert PENMAN born 20 Nov 1849. Parents were William Penman c1808 Camlachie, died 19 Aug 1852 Glasgow, and Helen Drummond born 2 Mar 1812 Crieff. It appears they had two children, both girls, being Mary, also Helen Baxter PENMAN born 17 Sep 1847 Glasgow. It states that Mary was a very sick child and I believe that she was nursed and brought back to health by Mary CAMPBELL. These families lived at Gallowgate (unsure if it is a "Street"). Also I found Helen PENMAN was a lodger with the SPARLING family on the 1861 Census. Joseph SPARLING was a witness at her birth, and they too lived at Gallowgate. Helen Drummond Penman sought relief after her husband died, and it seems Helen herself wasn't in the best of health either. She was paralysed on the right side so it seems she wasn't well enough to raise her children. The Application for Relief refers to Doctor's reports but I was advised that none were available. I have been unable to find a death for Helen Drummond Penman. There was one in 1860 with the surname of OWEN but the age was 75yo, way out. I now believe that this is the family I am after and would like to make contact with any relatives, if possible. I do have a couple of questions. For William Penman's funeral, it states that he had a chaise with two horses. I know what a chaise lounge is, and I know what a carriage is, but could someone explain just what a chaise is please? Also, with both the sisters having names such as Mary Gilbert and Helen Baxter; could anyone hazard a guess where the middle names of Gilbert and Baxter would come from? With thanks. As you know Catholic records are beginning to show on Scotlands People. Below is a list of Hackett's ( exact spelling only) in date order within alphabetical Christian name order. It appears Catholic burial records do not account for female maiden names which means any married females born as Hackett's will not show and only be found under their married names. I don't believe that Thomas Lett Hackett was connected to our family. As all of our men were Orangemen in Canada I think that they may have known him and their father sent the tintype to his son in Michigan. I wouldn't put too much strength on his kinship because of religion - it was often changed, much like a shirt, by some depending upon the circumstances of the time. The adjoining districts of Calton and Bridgeton would cover no more than a half a mile radius each, so any deaths in the equally densely populated surrounding registration districts would not show here. It is certain that some Hacketts would have moved to nearby areas like the Gorbals and Tradeston just across the River Clyde or to areas such as Parkhead, Dennistoun or Camlachie. It is very probable that when Martin Hackett and Catherine Reilly arrived in Glasgow from Fermanagh in 1846 that they both already had relatives in Glasgow, but I have never traced these. I cannot be certain that all of the Hacketts mentioned below are relatives but I would be surprised if some, if not most, were not. For that reason I have only highlighted in bold those Hacketts I am certain are relatives. The reason why I started in 1855 was because that was the year Birth Certificates became compulsory in Scotland, and before then deaths in Scotland were rarely recorded. It is difficult to imagine suffering like this in one family but the probability is that this type of misery was common for many at that time and in particular amongst the poorest who were the Catholic Irish. Of the deaths shown below 21 were of children who died at less than 5 years old and only three reached the age of 70 or more, the so called allotted three score and ten. If you are ever in Glasgow and are going up London Road from the city centre, then just about half a mile past Celtic Park is Dalbeth, where virtually all of my mothers Irish and Catholic ancestors and relatives who came to Glasgow are buried. There lie not only our Hacketts, but Boyles, Keans, Kellys, McMenemies, Reillys and many more. My Hacketts were Catholics but that yours was an Orangeman with almost certainty puts his origins in either Ulster or the west of Scotland ----- Original Message ---- From: Cliff. Cliff. Johnston “May the best you’ve ever seen, Be the worst you’ll ever see,” >From A Scots Toast by Allan Ramsay -----Original Message----- From: lanark-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:lanark-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of duncan mcintosh Sent: Thursday, November 04, 2010 7:49 AM To: lanark Subject: [Lanark] Hackett deaths Bridgeton and Calton HACKETT DEATHS 1855-1900 ( Bridgeton and Calton Districts) Below are a list of Hackett deaths between 1855 and 1900 within the districts of Bridgeton and Calton in the East End of Glasgow. Their gravestone is in Carnwath kirkyard, so that may be what you have seen, though if they had other siblings who married each other, they wouldn't be the first! Best wishes, Sheena -----Original Message----- From: G Russell <g_g_russell@btinternet.com> Tell me more about your Martin connections .... (in Carluke ?) Would they be to the Martins ( wood merchants, joiners ) in School Lane or the Lanark family who operated the 'Electric Laundry' ? I wonder if I've seen a gravestone to Tennant / Martin in the Old St Luke's Cemetery in Carluke ?

On the > 1861 and 1871 > Censuses the birth place of Thomas SMITH is given as > Cambusnethan, > Lanarkshire. Linlithgowshire and West Lothian are synonymous. If you go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, invest in a few credits at modest cost (30 credits for about a fifth of what I understand to be the cost of buying one NZ certificate), and use six of them to find and download Alexander's birth certificate, it should tell you exactly where in the parish of Whitburn he was born. I suggest that you also use another six to find and download the image of his sister Mary's birth certificate. She was born on 13 March 1855 in Whitburn, and 1855 BCs contain a huge amount of extra information that you don't get in any other year, including ages and birthplaces of the parents. The birthplace will be somewhere very close to the boundary between the parishes of Whitburn and Cambusnethan, the former in West Lothian (aka Linlithgowshire) and the latter in Lanarkshire. I have come across several instances in my own tree of people whose birthplace seems to wander back and forth across this same boundary! If Thomas and Janet died in Scotland, you should be able to get Janet's death certificate quite easily because the deaths of married women are indexed under both their maiden and their married names. Thomas may be a little more difficult, but you will have his age from the 1855 BC and the 1861 and 1871 censuses, and you will know from Janet's DC whether he died before or after her, and you know roughly where he is likely to have lived and therefore died. If you get his DC first time, you should get the names of his parents, and you'll still have enough credits left for another certificate or census image. Happy hunting! Anne
Unless there is other information to the contrary, I would think that DINGWALL was also a possibility for that surname. I am researching Robert Graham born 1806 who married Isobel Nairn in Carnwath on October 21, 1828. Marriage record indicates both were of Carnwath parish. I cannot locate a Carnwath birth/baptism record for Robert Graham who was born around 1806 (based upon his grave marker in Mt. Savage, Maryland, USA). There are 3 Robert Graham birth records for Lanark in 1806, but none are in Carnwath parish. I have potentially ruled out the Robert Graham who was born in Hamilton parish based upon census records for 1841, 1851 and 1861. My Robert left Scotland in 1836. The 2 remaining birth records are Lanark parish and Avondale parish. I am partial to the record for the Lanark parish birth only because of naming conventions – the father’s name is James and my Robert named his first son James. Any help from someone familiar with the Graham’s in Carnwath/Lanark would be appreciated. Thanks! Terri
> The 1820 birth record of my gg grandmother has the words > "Children of > Dissenters" across the top of the page. I've never come > across this before. > What was the ultimate purpose of keeping track of births this > way? Did the > children wear a big scarlet D on their clothing? ;-) The Church of Scotland was supposed to keep a record of all baptisms and marriages in the parish, even though the people involved were not members of the Church of Scotland congregation. I suppose the purpose was just noting the difference. I've found plenty of baptisms of RCs and Episcopalians in the C of S registers, and it was rare for the C of S register to state that they were of another denomination - I only know because of finding the same event in the RC or Pisky register as well. So no red D or any other marks ;-) In 1820 'Dissenters' would not, of course, include members of the Free Church, because the Free Church did not come into existence until 1843. Anne
