I am not > sure where to > go from here, what good Scottish websites to use. What sort of > records I > should check etc. www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is THE web site because you can download, at modest cost, images of the original birth, marriage and death certificates, old parish registers and census; there is no other site where you can access all the necessary original documents. There are various useful sites which have transcriptions and indexes, for example http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ is probably the best compendium of links and sources for Scottish genealogy. It also has sections with advice for beginners, with links from the home page at http://www.genuki.org.uk/. - http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl has a growing collection of transcriptions of the census. These transcriptions are usually reliable because (a) they are transcribed by two different people and any differences carefully scrutinised to resolve discrepancies and (b) the transcribers are volunteers with an interest in genealogy but, as always, plan to look at originals to check. - the International Genealogical Index at http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true but it is and INDEX, not a primary source. It is an unrivalled finding aid for Scottish births/baptisms and marriages before 1875, but be very wary of anything you find here, especially if it is 'submitted'. It is absolutely essential always to track down and look at the original document. There is also www.ancestry.com or www.ancestry.co.uk which you will stumble over time and again. It has various transcriptions of the census, but the spellings in these transcriptions are notoriously weird. Useful for tracking down awkward entries in the census, but you still need to plan to look at the originals to be sure you have the right information.

    3. Hello Duncan I couldn't find your family in the 1861 Census on Ancestry. I had a look at the 1871 Census and see that according to that, Agnes McTEAR was born in Saltcoats c1864. Scotlands People has only 1 birth of an Agnes M*c*t*r registered in Ayrshire between 1862 and 1866 and she was born in Saltcoats in 1864, BUT was the daughter of Robert McTear and Jane Lundie who were married in 1856 in Newtonards, Ireland (source: Agnes McTear's birth certificate). (There was no Agnes Mattee or Matee born in Ayrshire during this time). It may be that your GG Grandparents forgot to register the birth of Agnes if they had newly arrived from Ireland. I have come across a number of instances where Irish immigrants have not registered the births of children, including some in my own family. I think it may be that as newly arrived immigrants, they didn't realise that births had to be registered Rhoda
