    3. Hi Thank you for confirming all the things I knew. I have know found Margaret Kirk (Helen's mother) on the 1841 cenus, with 2 children that I am now struggling to place!! I am wondering if either Helen had more children or had married before or after Augustin. I will keep digging! Many thanks for your help, it is really appreciated. kind regards Julie ----- Original Message ----- From: "CandROverson" <overson12@btinternet.com> To: <lanark@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 11, 2010 12:07 PM Subject: Re: [Lanark] Help: Helen REID/LEGGAT/DE LA COSTA (DOUGLAS) > Hello Julie > > I haven't found out who your John DOUGLAS is but have found some info > relating to Helen REID. > > The Scotlands People (SP) OPR marriage index lists 8 children born to a > Robert REID and Margaret KIRK between 1791 and 1809. 3. Hello Julie I haven't found out who your John DOUGLAS is but have found some info relating to Helen REID. The Scotlands People (SP) OPR marriage index lists 8 children born to a Robert REID and Margaret KIRK between 1791 and 1809. No Helen is listed but the other children were born in Arbroath (Angus), Glasgow and Greenock (Renfrewshire) - starting off in Arbroath and ending up in Greenock. The OPR marriage index has the marriage or banns of a Helen Reid to Augustin Coort (sic) in Greenock New or Middle on 6 July 1814. According to Helen's death certificate Augustus COAST (sic) was a seaman (what makes you think his name was 'de la COSTA'?). I could find only 1 child born to this couple listed in the SP birth index. She was Helen COST (sic) born or baptised in Greenock New of Middle on 2 July 1815. She married James SMITH in Hamilton in 1835. There may have been other children who are not listed for one reason or another. For example, a Margaret or Janet COAST married John SMITH in Hamilton in 1839. I couldn't find a death registration for a Catherine Douglas m.s. Telford and wondered if Catherine Douglas could have been Helen's daughter, and John Douglas Helen's son-in-law. The marriage index shows the marriage or banns of a Helen Reid to John LEGGAT in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on 3 March 1839. The image of the entry of Helen's marriage to Augustin 'Coort' may be downloaded from SP, although it is unlikely to tell you very much. Go for his death certificate. Find Catherine's first, because she will be indexed under both Telford and Douglas. This will tell you whether John had died before her, which will narrow the search for his death certificate. Anne

    3. Hi all I have a real mystery and would appreciate and help or thoughts on my problem. Helen REID died in 1873 at 51 Marlbrough street, Glasgow - informant in John DOUGLAS (SON). She is named as the child of Robert REID and Margaret KIRK. 2 husbands are listed LEGGAT and De la COSTA. In 1871 she is living in at 56 Marlbrough Street. She is listed as grandmother. John DOUGLAS is listed as the head of household. I have no idea who John Douglas is ??? I have traced John back to the 1851 census and he appears to have married Catherine TELFORD. There is the birth of a John Douglas (abt. 1824, Hamilton) to James Douglas and Helen Paterson. But i still can not link him to Helen Reid. Any ideas.

    3. Ruth, If she married in Toronto then I would hit your local FHL or Genealogical Society and search the Toronto City Directory from say 1917 on and see if you can spot her there under Graham. If you do find her, then find the year she is no longer listed under Graham and search the Ontario marriages which are available up until 1928. You can access these via inter-library loan through the Ontario Archives. I know some FHL and Genealogical Societies have these marriage records on fische. Cheers!!! 3. Hello Bob, A few thoughts on the information so far. You say that the 1861 census states born LKS Glasgow. What is stated in other censuses? I recently did some research for a friend and the person she was looking for gave a birthplace of Dumbarton, Stirling and Falkirk in three different censuses. She was actually born in Helensburgh. Information on a certificate is only as good as that given by the person giving it. When I went to the registrar to register my mother's death I didn't take her birth or marriage certificates with me because I couldn't find them. My mum had dementia and hid everything. When emptying her house I eventually found one certificate in a pillowcase and the other wrapped in a towel! The information I gave was correct but I could have told the registrar anything. Good luck with your search. Janet

I can't agree with this latter comment. It sounds similar to another made to me some years ago, that the registration index beginning with 'B" meant that the child was a b--t--d, when in fact it meant that the child was born in the Brisbane area of Queensland. All the certificates of my relatives, birth, marriage and death, state the name of the mother as the maiden name. The parents were all definitely married, none of the childen were illegitimate. The only time the name of the mother was stated as the married name/maiden name was when she was a widow or previously married. Gay ----- Original Message -----

    3. Hi Bob, Here are some thoughts. Have you tried looking for a marriage for the parents, to confirm that little bit of a possibility. I couldn't find any LDS record of a marriage for John Duff or Jean/Jane McMillin and don't have credits left for the ''pay'' sites like scotlandspeople and findmypast.. . Perhaps Scotlandspeople may be able to solve the mystery.of the marriage. Perhaps his father may have been in the Army and married overseas, There are 10 John Duffs who served in the British Army and were granted Chelsea Pensions, Four or five of those are possible candidates based on their period of service. Find my past now has the Chelsea Pension records online , as well as Marriages overseas 1761-1994 and Births overseas 1761-1994 . Perhaps his parents marriage is amongst those records which are not on Scotlandspeople and recorded separately on the Mitchell Library database.. The Mitchell will be able to help you out if you email them. Their address is Archives@csglasgow.org You may have tried all or some of these...but Good Luck and Happy Christmas. Cheers Gay -----
