There is a caveat to these though! It can be a bit more difficult where second marriages occur. For example my mother re-married and had further children so:- I am her son (obvious!) the later children are Half-brothers and sisters (so far ao uncomplicated) BUT my half sister's children are not half-nephews and half-nieces - they are half-cousins! Mike, You've raised a point that I had not previously thought about but, now that I have, I wonder whether you are correct. If we follow the "rule" of calculating generations from the latest common ancestors (note the plural), then a "half sibling" is actually a "first cousin", and their children are "first cousins once removed" No? Hmm .... I presume ( from the Auction reference ) that they were farmers ... ? In the 1830s, Shotts Parish included Shotts, and Omoa as the largest settlements, with the largest part of the Parish depending on relatively marginal farming land, at fairly high levels above sea level ... Farming would be be pretty difficult and extremely unrewarding ..... The coal reserves were under rapid development ( at Shotts and Wilsontown), and the Ironworks, too were consuming land and people at a great rate .... The railway era had yet to reach the Parish to any great extent. On the 'political front' , the depressions following the end of the Napoleonic Wars were biting hard .... land owners had lost their oldest sons, and were reluctant to spend money on their Tenants. Agricultural prices were low. The era of the 'great reform' was in its infancy - political power had yet to give the small landowner and ordinary people the vote, and multiple harvest failures / bad weather were frequent .... Oz would have seemed an attractive option - free land, emigration schemes financed by larger landowners to 'rid them of the idle Tenantry' and there would be generally better prospects in a 'New Land' ... ? You can read more in the slightly later 'Statistical Accounts' for the Parish, from the late 1700s to the 'New Statistical Account' of the 1850s ..... Google the 'Statistical Accounts for Scotland' and read them online ...... I have a later (1870s) Parish History somewhere, if I can find it ..... G Russell Carluke Parish South Lanarkshire

Hello All, I have attached a letter just received from a KERR cousin who lives in Australia. Eric says that he has booked a trip to the area of Shotts. He has written a book on his KERR ancestors who immigrated to Australia & there are plenty of them. They held a reunion down under a few years back & rounded up about 500. Of that large KERR family, all but one went to Australia. The missing one had earlier immigrated to Canada with a gaggle of PATERSONs & others from the Shotts area, (some connected surnames being WADDELL, WALKINGSHAW). James KERR, son of George KERR & Jean GRAHAM, married Margaret PATERSON, daughter of Robert PATERSON & Janet [Jennet] Margaret THOMSON, 20 May 1832, in the parish of Shotts, Lanarkshire, Scotland. They had at least 3 children born in Scotland, (who are buried in Windsor, Quebec, Canada) & at least 4 more born in Quebec, beginning in 1844. Below is a photo of an old auction sale notice that is still in the possession of family in Quebec. I am still in the dark about why a considerable number of people left Shotts, en-mass about 1843. I have photos of some of the Quebec tombstones if anyone is interested. TTFN Lila
