    3. Good morning Have just "upgraded" from Windows XP, because the support for this ends in April, to Windows 8.1. Very interesting I must say but I have "misplaced" a lot of my address book. If you have written to me recently or just want to say "Hi" please feel free to do so. Also I am still looking for links to my paternal line of STEED. My grandfather was Andrew born in 1874 in Dalmellington Ayrshire and died in 1943 in Stevenston Ayrshire. He was married to Elizabeth LENNON born 1881 Stevenston and died in 1969 again in Stevenston. Her parents were Patrick LENNON and Marion McCARTNEY and his were Andrew STEED and Eleanor McFADZEAN (he died in Glasgow after being run down by a railway engine in 1894). This might seem as if it should be on the Ayrshire list (which it will be) but the STEED/STEAD family did live in the Bluevale Street Glasgow area for some time as well (at the time of Andrew's death in 1894 they were at 38 Clova Terrace Uddingston). Hope to hear back from some of my missing addressees. Ewan Steed

    3. Rhoda, It is not that those websites are incorrect in that they are copying the information given in a US government publication. The problem is that the publication is wrong. Hugh Logan's original enlistment record states his birthplace is Scotland. All other records that required a statement of place of birth give Scotland. His birth is in the Lanark Parish records. As usual with government's, trying to find a person who has the authority to make the correction and cares enough to do it is not easy. It might never be corrected. But meanwhile, as my last post stated, Hugh's burial place has been located. Thank you for your help. 3. I would like to thank the list for all the help with this research. I have heard back from Lesley Davidson at lanarkshire.gov.uk. She has sent me the burials daybook pages for Hugh jr, Hugh sr and Martha LOGAN's burials. If anyone is related to this LOGAN family I would be happy to forward copies. Meanwhile, the extracted information is below. 3. Jo-Ann The Irish birth appears to be accepted officially. See: http://projects.militarytimes.com/citations-medals-awards/recipient.php?recipientid=1384 (that is just one of the many references to his Irish birth that I found with a Google search). I don’t know the status of the ‘Military Times, Hall of Valor’ or the source of its information. Have you proof that the Hugh Logan born to Hugh Logan and Janet Easton is the same Hugh Logan who was awarded the Medal of Honor? If so, then you are right about his Scottish birth. His baptism entry in the Lanark Parish Register can be viewed on the Scotlands People website. I will contact them. As for the Irish-born rumor, I don't think that is correct. Hugh appears as a child in Lanark for the 1841 census with his parents and siblings, all born in the county. While Hugh is not at home for the 1851 census, his parents and siblings are shown as born in Lanark, Lanarkshire. In both the 1891 and 1901 census, he gives his place of birth as Lanark, Lanarkshire. If the family historically originated in Ireland, some proof should be brought forward other than the surname. I received information from a list member about the existing MIs for this family. It seems that there is an undated stone for Hugh LOGAN in the local cemetery which could be Hugh jr (MoH recipient) who died 1903 or his father who died 1886. Perhaps the Family History Society would know where to find the lair records. Jo-Ann

    3. Jo-Ann Have you thought about contacting the Lanarkshire Family History Society? ( http://www.lanarkshirefhs.org.uk). I am sure someone there will be interested in finding out something about the background to this 'local hero'. If there was not much money in the family he was probably buried in an unmarked grave, maybe in Glasgow where he died. Perhaps the best hope is that something appeared in a contemporary Scottish newspaper at the time of his death. I am trying to find his grave as he is a United States Medal of Honor recipient whose grave has never been located.

    3. Fraser, Here are transcriptions of the death registrations of Hugh and of his father Hugh (whose father was also named Hugh according to the informant). 3. The index at www.scotlandspeople lists just two James Quin(n)s born 1889 plus or minus five years and died in Motherwell, one in 1974 and the other in 1983. Both those are less than 50 years ago, so the certificates are not available to view on the Scotland's People web site. If he didn't die in Motherwell, and assuming no creative spelling variations, he could be one of 26 others who died in Lanarkshire, or 35 who died in the rest of Scotland, all aged at least 30. If I were looking for him, I would look at both those certificates, and then I'd look for corresponding births, in the hope that one of them was born in Scotland. There were 79 births of James Quin(n)s in Scotland between 1885 and 1895, but you'd have an exact date of birth from the death certificate(s) so you'd only have to check one, or at most two, years. If that failed (i.e. neither was born in Scotland), I would then try searching for family, hoping that one had a daughter Beatrice and the other did not. There were 10 Bea* Quin(n)s born in Scotland between 1914 and 1970, but again you would have to send away for all these certificates because they are more recent than 100 years ago, so they are not available to download on the Scotland's People web site. I suggest that you consider hiring a professional searcher, which should work out cheaper (and much quicker!) than sending for sheaves of certificates.
