    3. My stepmum who was born in Glasgow, wrote her memoirs in a small paperback book. She starts her story with, "I was born at 78 Woodrop Street, Glasgow 5C. We lived in what is known as a 'tenemant building',flats three on each floor, we were on the fourth floor. The main room was large with a bed set in the wall which was mum and dad's. There were shelves around two sides of the wall on which was mum's special tea and dinner set. There was a big open range fireplace with ovens and a big hob, with shiny copper kettle. It was very cosy with a coal fireplace, easy chairs and big dining table oak, with six chairs and a big oak side board. We had one big back window, sinks attached to it. There were no hot taps in those days, heated water on the hob." I wonder if the street mum lived in still exists. Edie McArthur Researching the family of John and Isabella mcArthur nee Stevenson. 3. In my ‘gutting-out’ I also found an article bemoaning how many Scottish place names are being Anglicised: Strathspey is now Spey Valley (strath = wide or river valley, unlike a glen) Valley, Valley? Clydesdale is now referred to as Clyde Valley ... Covenanting territory who would have fought to the death rather than yield to this Anglicising. Tweeddale will likely be the Tweed Valley soon enough Likewise, the border reivers would have been scratching their heads over Liddlesdale now being Liddlesdale Valley. Dale, Dale? Inchcolm is an island on the Firth of Forth, possibly named for Columba's Island. Once again, duplication of words that mean the same...Island, Island? Law is not necessarily a surname but means a hill, such as Berwick Law, Dundee Law...sometimes referred to locally as the Law hill! Hill, Hill? Sir Walter Scott sanitised the house he had built on the farm Cartleyhole (or Clarty Hole by the locals) to Abbotsford. Thank goodness the Briggat in Glasgow has not been refined to Bridgegate. Robert Burns referred to Scotland as the Land o' Cakes (oatcakes, not fancy cakes), which is acceptable as oatcakes were a staple fare at one time.

Make me porridge, serve me haggis, Grill me kippers, smokies, too; Complement with buttered oatcakes, Or potato scones will do. Sew my suit from Harris Tween and Knit my stole with Shetland wool. 3. Hi Maisie, Subject: Subject Line . Just back from a holiday and opened my e-mail to the LKS folder. What a surprise subject line: "FTM problems with sex" don't know about anyone else but sure made me laugh . Glad my initials are not "FTM" or the misses may have a few words about this subject line. Keep up the great dialogue, the actual subject matter is interesting, will have to look at the programmes on my PC and see if I can contribute something to the postings. 3. Hi Maisie I only have FTM 2011 installed at present Opening in family view, selecting the person to edit, on the right is the persons name with a drop down box, Male, Female or Unknown are the options I selected female for a male name and it appeared to accept that and checked his wife and she was also as a female It may be different for FTM 2014 but don't think so The subject has I think been discussed on one of the FTM lists of which there are FTM, FTM-Tech and FTM-Help Its certainly going to cause some problems, not to say confusion in trees in the future Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 31/03/2014 18:21, Maisie Egger wrote: > Obviously the Family Tree Maker and all such other genealogy recording programmes will have to move with the times. > > England has just passed a Marriage Equality Law (or whatever it’s called), but a male relative in Scotland has been in a registered Civil Union with his male partner since 2009. 3. Anne, I'm so sorry for getting back to you so late! Have had other pressing issues, that needed immediate attention! I honestly can't understand why I can't add children to an unmarried mother! Think I'll have to invest in a more user friendly program, as this seems to be lacking to me! Thanks ever so much for your knowledge! Lorraine -----Original Message----- From: Anne Burgess <[email protected]> To: Ken <[email protected]>; 'Lorraine' <[email protected]>; ovington.one <[email protected]>; lanark <[email protected]> Sent: Sat, Mar 29, 2014 4:34 am Subject: Re: [Lanark] PAF help I too am amazed at Lorraine's problem. I've been using PAF since about version 2 on a DOS machine in 1988. Now using PAF v 5.2.18.0 with Windows 7 on one machine and XP on others. I tried FTM but didn't like it, so reverted to using PAF. There are dozens of unmarried mothers in my database, some with the names of the fathers of their children and 'not married' in the marriage date field. I have also added many a new name where I previously had an unknown spouse. PAF does have several really annoying features. One is that it doesn't like it if you enter children out of the order of their birth. It would be good to be able to set preferences to reorder them automatically rather than moan about it. Another is the dialog box that insists on popping up if you put a street number in a place field. Another follows on from what is thinks is an error, for example a number in a place field or a child born before its parents' marriage. There should be a way of telling it that you have checked the information and it is correct, so please don't flag it up as an error again. Then there is the match/merge feature. It should allow you to tell it that you have checked a particular suggested match, and that it is genuinely two different people, so that it does not present you with the same suggestion again. If anyone knows how to do any of these things, I'd love to know how, because with over 35,000 people in the database, the 'find errors' and 'match/merge' functions are effectively pretty useless. BTW I avoid using 'unknown' in the name field if I don't know who the person is, because the program uses the word 'unknown'. If forced to put in a name, I use 'nk' so that it is obvious (to me) what I have put in and what the program has put in automatically. Anne

    3. Thank you, Bob. I have FTM 2012 downloaded but I have been using the 2009 version. I also have the so much more simpler 2004 on my other computer as it is not compatible with Windows 7. I am anything but computer savvy but I clicked on to the FTM 2012 version and it would seem that one can choose the sex, without its being done for you, if you will. I don’t want the hassle of transferring everything from the 2009 FTM version to this 2012 because of the “ambivalence” of the sex choice of one entry UNLESS the entries in 2009 can somehow be automatically merged with the 2012 version.
