    1. [Lanark] IR on headstones---Not!
    2. Maisie Egger via
    3. I feel like such a dopey dame re my enquiry about IR, or so I thought, on headstones. I sent the photos of the headstones to a friend who magnified them enough that he figured it was something as simple (though fancy inscription) as ‘In’ --- In Memory of --- or---In Loving Memory of.... Scrutinising the magnified photos of the headstones again, it is all as clear as day and that I was looking into something that was not there. No Latin, Greek or Hebrew translation necessary, just pure commonsense that the so-called initials were fancy, inscribed letters in English for ‘In.’ Hope I didn’t have anyone scratching his/her head bald trying to figure this one out! Maisie ------------------------------------------------ I have received photographs of distant relatives who seem to be a mixed bag of religious persuasions: some with a Celtic Cross headstone, and some with the inscription IR. I cannot seem to find it on Google or in a ‘real’ dictionary. Any suggestions as to what IR means? Maisie

    3. Hi Pat The 1911 is available on scotlandspeople but no other sites have access to it Scotlandspeople is pay per view for anyone, there are no subscriptions It differed somewhat to the way it was taken in England & Wales in that the Scotland 1911 was transcribed as in earlier census, whereas in England & Wales it was in the hand of the householder Scotlands household schedules were destroyed unfortunately Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 14/08/2014 08:56, Pat Sheldon via wrote: > Hello List, > > > > I have - JOHN O'NEIL born 1846(?) wife ANN McBRATNEY b.1847 Colmonell Ayr. > I have the 1901 census for them but wondered if there was access yet to the > 1911 census for Hamilton Scotland. 2. Pat Sheldon via
    3. Hello List, I have - JOHN O'NEIL born 1846(?) wife ANN McBRATNEY b.1847 Colmonell Ayr. I have the 1901 census for them but wondered if there was access yet to the 1911 census for Hamilton Scotland. I think he was a stone mason amongst other professions. Children Bridget, MARGARET (my G.G.Grandmother b.1871 married Hugh Connor), Mary Ann and Agnes, boys - John 1881, Hugh 1888, Henry 1890. On the 1901 census they had THOMAS CONNOR aged 4 grandson living with them, I have no further information on him after this census. Any help and any of the above would be hugely appreciated. Many thanks in anticipation. P. Sheldon.

    1. [Lanark] need help with SP image viewer

    3. I’ve always had Java for my images on Scotland’s People...and all of a sudden I don’t. I’ve read all the pages that supposedly show you what to do and I’m so confused... On my “details page”...which I’ve never opened before... it showed that I had selected Java Applet which always worked before...but I can’t find a link on SP to do that other than the one thing that I clicked on and up popped my IE warning at the bottom which I clicked on “allow” and it all went downhill from there... ...and when I go to another download page there are so many I don’t know what to choose... I have a laptop and usually use Internet Explorer, but I can also use Firefox... Can someone help me with some easy instructions....I just want to see the image I just paid for... 1. [Lanark] Livingstone Penman Russell
    2. Jeffrey Russell via
    3. I have several cousins named Livingstone/Livingston Penman Russell in my tree. The oldest I have found so far was born 1843 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire. Others were born 1872, 1890, 1892 and 1912, some born in Scotland and some in Newburgh, NY. The name shows up in different branches of my tree, and there was at least one instance of two Livingston Penman Russells living at the same time in different families. My question is in regards to the name. At first I assumed Livingstone came from David Livingstone, the well known missionary and physician from Blantyre, however LP Russell somewhat predates David Livingstone's fame. The middle name Penman does not show up in my tree, at least what I have found so far, other than in the Livingstone Penman Russell name. Can anyone provide information as to where the name Livingstone Penman Russell may have originated? Thanks. Jeff Russell

    3. Susan I am descended from the family of William Young and Jane (usually Jessie) Young who married in 1837 in Old Monkland. According to my research their last child was born and baptised in 1864 in Overton, Cambusnethan. They did have a daughter Jane (Jessie) who was born in 1848 in Carfin but, as you see, that is almost 20 years earlier than your ancestor. It is, I suppose, possible that the first Jane died and their last child was born in 1866/7. Brian Porter > > Today's Topics: > > 1. John Watson/Jessie Young descendants (Susan Wheeler) > 2. 3. One of mine, Hew/Hugh Colquhoun was born in Duror, Argyll in 1839, came to Glasgow in the 1860s and by 1891 census was a Superintendent of Police in Glasgow. He had also shaved a few years off his age and changed his place of birth to Dunbartonshire. Marrying his son was a big step up socially for my husband's great grandaunt and she dropped contact with the Vernon family once her mother died.
