Hi Neal, Stablestone School closed this year with it's 3 pupils now attending Douglas primary. Although well after your time zone,Douglas Heritage Museum has several classroom photographs from the 50's and 60's which list the name Brown, a very common name in the Glespin. regards billy from Douglas On 19 September 2014 23:18, brown.hawea via <[email protected]> wrote: > My grandfather attended Stablestone School, near Douglas in about 1873 – > his elder siblings would also have attended there. > While in the Lanark library last year the librarian was most helpful but > was unable to say where the records of pupils may be held. > I emailed the school, but I have had no response – does anyone have any > suggestions? > Neal Brown > Lake Hawea > New Zealand > > ------------------------------- > > WHEN REPLYING to a post please remember to snip most of the earlier > message. My grandfather attended Stablestone School, near Douglas in about 1873 – his elder siblings would also have attended there. While in the Lanark library last year the librarian was most helpful but was unable to say where the records of pupils may be held. I emailed the school, but I have had no response – does anyone have any suggestions? Neal Brown Lake Hawea New Zealand
Neal, Try The Mitchell Library in Glasgow. I received details (although it depends on the records that have survived) of my father who attended MacDonald School in Rutherglen, LKS. In your email to them include the name of father and mother, timeframe, other children and their address/es in that timeframe. If you have more than one family living and being schooled in the same timeframe and area/parish include them in them as well. I use Tribalpages and it is very simple to use. Never had a problem with it. Now on a version that has a fee attached but for many years used the free one. I would recommend this programme. Pamela Harrow I?d never heard of Wikitree until I recently received a link from someone who has been able to record his family all the way back (phenomenally) to the 1500s. This Wikitree is free, from what I can understand. I need to investigate a little bit more, but if anyone is looking for a genealogy programme maybe on the face of it this will answer the person?s needs. When I began using Family Tree Maker a few years back, it was very simple to use. Subsequently, I have downloaded later versions and I find them a royal pain to manoeuvre around to insert or retrieve information. Do records of this office still exist ?. My forebears left Old Monklands in 1854 with an assisted passage to South Australia. I would presume that as they were given assisted passages to Australia, they would have had to apply to the above office. Any thoughts , ideas ??. Regards John Elliott. Melbourne

I went to Mitchell Library last year and got a wealth of information . My great-great-grandmother applied for Poor House residency twice, and both times an interviewer asked many questions and I got more answers than I knew what to do with. You can ask for help by e-mail, might cost £15. and take 8 weeks. I'm going to Belfast and Letterkenny in a couple of weeks, I hope I get similar results. Frank, Have you contacted the Mitchell about getting records of the City Poorhouse, Glasgow residents for James McGonegale? Some of the copies I have received have useful information, whilst others have been 'dead in the water!' Some people crab about the so-called poor service from the Mitchell, but I have been more than satisfied. There is a charge, of course, if anything is uncovered. In most of my cases it was well worth it. Hello, Nivard, You will be interested to know that your comments about T.C. Smout’s book on the history of Scotland over the years finally got me to move my bones and order a copy through Amazon. I am now at chapter two, and even early on in the book I realise just how much I have forgotten about the beginnings of Scotland, with all the different people’s with their mixed genes (wonder what the referendum YES people will make of so much English blood!), which is an ongoing situation even in these times. There have been large influxes from Poland, ‘Romany,’and other countries, bringing their religions and cultures with them. Scotland technically has been a Presbyterian country, shall we say, since the Reformation, but now with an influx of some 600,00 Poles in the U.K., with about 40,000 in Scotland, and 12,000 in Northern Ireland, the established church itself is going to be impacted. Thanks for the nudge, Nivard, in mentioning T.C. Smout’s book. I know that I am going to thoroughly enjoy reacquainting myself with the ongoing history of the wee Land o’ Cakes. Maisie
Hello All, I tried accessing Ancestry Canadian without success, I am looking for any info on James Scott Keith b 6 Jun 1897 Rutherglen to Thomas KEITH and Annie Freebairn BEVERIDGE. James sailed on the “Melita” to Canada in July 1921, he mentions a sister from Notts., he (or I have in my tree) 2 unmarried sisters, Jeanie and Agnes, neither of them could I find marrying an EVERINGTON, all other siblings are accounted for. Any information on a marriage or death in Canada for James Scott KEITH would be welcome. Thanks, Jenny Lake Macquarie NSW Aus --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! This family baptised kids in New Monkland & Port Glasgow but were married in Cumbernauld, the OPR has no indication of origin. The PRF has a marriage in March 1764 in New Monkland, which is not to be found on ScotlandsPeople. It also has rather too young individuals getting married - wishful linking is my guess.
