I put photos of our family's 30 November 2013 visit to the Dura Kirk, Bonkle Village, and Bonkle Church online at: http://russellsofbonkle.blogspot.com/ I would welcome COMMENTS about the Bonkle Church and the Old Church on the Dura Road. Special thanks to George Russell of Carluke who was the guide for his American Cousins that day. Traveling right now and can't access the photos of the Bonkle Church, which I will be glad to share in a blog this weekend. In the meantime, here is a wonderful transcription of The Bonkle United Pres Church Baptismal record, 1837 - 1852 http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=593863.msg5035728#msg5035728 Judy Russell Bogart, GA, USA ----- Original Message ----- From: "G Russell via" <[email protected]> To: "lafinken" <[email protected]> Cc: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, October 17, 2014 12:21 PM Subject: Re: [Lanark] Bonkle Manse Cambusnethan > Hi Lindsey, > > Bonkle Church is (now) Church of Scotland but, pre 1927 it would be a > 'dissenting' congregation - i.e Presbyterian but not of the 'established' > church ... > > It was formed from the congregation of Dura Kirk - the 'moor kirk' of > Cambusnethan, near the Shotts end of the Parish ... > > Both Dura ( as a ruin ), and the original Cambusnethan Parish Church ( > also > a ruin ) still survive. Hi Lindsey I assume you have the wording from a marriage (From Scotlandspeople or elsewhere?) The Manse is the Ministers house, in Scotland many marriages took place at the Manse There are several references online to Bonkle & Manse, in 1901 a Rev J HENDERSON SCOTT is residing at Bonkle Manse, occupation Clergyman United Free Church (but there might be more than one Manse in a place) Reference to he and Bonkle here http://www.bonkle.org.uk/bonkle/WP1..htm What are the full details found on the marriage which may answer your question More on Cambusnethan & Churches on Genuki here http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/LKS/Cambusnethan/ Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 17/10/2014 00:34, lafinken via wrote: > Hi all > > What demonination is this church? > > Thank You > > Lindsey > > Any church records available?

(This information should be reliable as it is a 'community indexed' listing and it is between 1855 and 1874.) The IGI does not list any John M(a)ckenzie born in Midlothian (which was also known as Edinburghshire) between 1864 and 1867. Three more children of the same couple are listed in the IGI James, born 13 April 1869, Stirling Elizabeth, born 4 December 1871, Inveresk and Musselburgh, Midlothian Cullen, born 26 May 1874, Leith, Midlothian A James Mackenzie, aged 12, born Stirling, is one of three child boarders in the household of Isabella Weir in Carstairs, Lanarkshire, in the 1881 census. I cannot guarantee that this is your John's younger brother, but there is no other listing of a James Mckenzie born in Stirlingshire between 1867 and 1870. I have not found John Sr, Sarah, Elizabeth or Cullen in the 1881 census so far. Though there is a Sarah McKenzie, married, aged 30, birthplace unknown, in the City Poor House in Edinburgh who could be yours. If she is, then this might explain why James is boarded out with Isabella Weir in Carstairs. But if she is yours, her age must be wrong, because if she was really only 30, she would have been born in 1850/51 and would not have been old enough to marry in 1865. The index at SP suggests that John McKenzie and Sarah Cairns were married in 1865. You need to go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and invest in 30 credits for £7. Use one credit to find and 5 to view that marriage certificate. It will tell you the ages of John and Sarah, and the full names of both sets of parents. You will still have enough credits left to find and view John Jr's birth certificate, the 1871 census (which will tell you where John Sr and Sarah were born) and possibly Sarah's death certificate, which should be indexed under both her maiden and her married name. Even then, you'll still have some left over. Happy hunting!
Hi, I'm quite interested in the workings of the Poor Law in Scotland. In the note below, for instance one line reads "To Margt Smith a traveler by Mr Laws order 0/4/ ?". In England that would indicate to me that Mr Law was a local person of higher rank, who could override the Overseer of the Poor and order that the parish take care of this traveller. Did Mr Law in these cases override the parish Elders to provide for the poor traveller? I'd appreciate your thoughts on this. Jim Bundy ? Burnly ? Hi Margaret The Sydney Morning Herald (main NSW newspaper) has death notices online from around 1999 to date. Just google Sydney Morning Herald death notices. There is also the Ryerson Index in which indexers have been indexing death, funeral and obituary notices from the main Australian papers and some of the smaller towns. You can request a lookup of that notice. Thank you, Anne, I've often wondered about winter conditions in Scotland - now I know :-) Cliff. On Tuesday, October 7, 2014 8:38 PM, Anne Burgess <[email protected]> wrote: > I've always wondered why they didn't do something inventive > with the left-over, treated shale, i.e.: build a ski hill or > modify a nearby mountain into a ski run ;-) Ski lifts hadn't been invented yet :-) And they have now found a use for it surfacing roads, so it's just as well they didn't use it up for something else. Some of the bings have been declared nature reserves because of the plant colonies that have developed on them, and people use them for recreation, motorcycling being one of the most popular uses. And I think at least one or two are now protected as industrial heritage sites. Seriously, Lowland Scotland isn't cold enough, so except in very bad winters snow doesn't last long. Even in the Highlands the freezing level in winter is often above the tops of the mountains, so that the snow surface at the ski resorts we do have often melts through the day and re-freezes at night. You can spot a skier trained in Scotland because not only can we ski on snow, we can handle porridge, ice, gravel, heather roots and snow fencing. Anne
