Impressive work again, Jim. I still don't know if my Brown lot came from that area, but this is a useful list to others, most likely. Hi Maisie The Labour corps were far more than just scavengers They were involved in entrenching, road works, railways, building etc but were also used for POW work and clearing munitions from the battlefield Later they had the awful job of recovering the dead to war cemeteries They have never really gained the recognition they deserved, by the end of the war they formed approx 10% of the Army Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 08/11/2014 19:48, Maisie Egger via wrote: > > Subject: Re: [Lanark] Home Town Battlefield > > Thank you, Bob, for this. Subject: Re: [Lanark] Home Town Battlefield Thank you, Bob, for this. There are those of us still around who are children of those who fought in WWI and whose lives were sorely impacted by this 'war to end all wars.' As referred to before, my father served with the Glasgow Highland Light Infantry (H.L.I.). Patched up in a hospital in England after he was wounded, he was sent back to France, only this time to serve in the Labour Corps. Not much has been written about this service, but from what my cousin related they were the 'battlefield scavengers,' if you will, who had to 'clean up' what they could. My father had been blown off his feet by exploding shells. This impacted his whole nervous system as the hearing system was affected. Research on Google is helpful in understanding what battlefield experiences entail. As a result of all of this, my father was a 'basket case.' whose nervous system had been so affected that he could not hold a cup of tea without its spilling. He could not work for many years. Of course, bureaucracy was such that they classified him as a malingerer and reduced his pension. One wonders how many thousands and thousands more who fought in France during WW! were so callously treated. I believe the veterans from recent wars are being treated a bit more humanely. Yes, lest we forget, those of us who have lived a more peaceful life owe it to so many, many who fought, with too many giving their lives for us. The U.K. is so mindful of WWI/WWII and other recent wars that many memorials are held to honour such sacrifices. On my family tree a relative who had served in the Merchant Navy had the honour of placing a wreath at the Cenotaph in London alongside the reigning monarch. There is barely a person walking in the street in the U.K. who does not wear a poppy on Poppy Day. When I lived at home (Glasgow) 'everyone' stopped what he/she was doing when the horns sounded throughout the city for two minutes silence at the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour, November 11. I think in America it is for one minute, but I do not think it is so universally observed as it is in the U.K. and likely the Commonwealth countries. Thank you, Bob. Remembrance Day/ Veterans Day Tuesday Nov 11 2014 is fast approaching when many attend memorial events and stop what we are doing at 1100 AM for two minutes to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. It is also time to pay tribute to those that returned with so many debilitating injuries both physical and mental which they will carry for the remainder of their lives. Since the end of WWII many countries have been involved in so many conflicts (wars) giving a new meaning to Nov 11, not just paying tribute to the distant past but all those involved with these wars/conflicts, Korea, Afghanistan, Gulf Wars and now the ISIS situation and more, and we can't forget Peace Keeping operations around the world. July 2014 was the start of WWI for a many countries, thus the 100 anniversary year. Anyways I would appreciate it if you took two minutes to have a look at the following video clip on U-tube, dealing with those that returned with the unseen disabilities and suffer in quiet. What was your Ggf's name, amd what was the name of his wife? What were the names of the sons, and when were they born? Was Reid the daughter's middle name or her married name? When did she die? Did you mean 'he brought his father' or 'he brought the rest of his family'? If it was the rest of his family, what were their names and when were they born?

Thanks to all who contributed an answer about this marriage place. I will look at all the information provided. Lindsey
Hi Lindsey, Bonkle Church is (now) Church of Scotland but, pre 1927 it would be a 'dissenting' congregation - i.e Presbyterian but not of the 'established' church ... It was formed from the congregation of Dura Kirk - the 'moor kirk' of Cambusnethan, near the Shotts end of the Parish ... Both Dura ( as a ruin ), and the original Cambusnethan Parish Church ( also a ruin ) still survive. Bonkle is now a 'linked' congregation with Coltness Church in Newmains ( the next settlement westward). Judith Russell , who is on this List, has extensive photographs from a recent visit here - including some of the Communion vessels etc. I live not too far from Bonkle, and can take more images if needed. The Churches also have a website, with some history etc. I don't know what records survive, but there may well be some ... you may need to check the National Archives ( in Edinburgh ) web indexes to see what they have. I hope this helps ... G Russell Carluke Scotland --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Antivirus protection is active. http://www.avast.com
