Hi Listers, I've missed being as active on this list (and others) as much as I'd like to have in 2014, but after many medical issues I finally created one that could have been my last. I foolishly at age 66 thought I'd move household items myself in a rental truck, which I'd done in the past (long ago) many times. So, my son and I began loading the truck, oh and also I'd never moved in winter before, so shortly after starting, I slipped on the metal deck of the enclosed truck and went down head first and slammed into frozen ground. I knew that I was in a serious way, and found out later that day that I'd broken my neck. Well, after a great surgery I'm recovering slowly. That day I promised my family (and myself) that I'll leave this to younger guys with good experience and in good shape. Think I'll just supervise now. :) Jim Page 17 Agust 5th William Mcechney barber in Glasgow and Jean Laurie in this pa: gave 1/10/0 John Walker in this pa: and Elizabeth Hoge in the parish of Cambusnethan gave 1/10/0 Septr 30 Robert Barrie and Jean Deans in the toun of Glasgow gave 1/10/0 Octbr 14 James Hamilton in the toun of Hamilton and Margret Fairlie in this pa: gave 1/10/0 David Millar in this parish and Elizabeth Garner in the parish of East Munkland gave 1/10/0 Octr 21 John Prentise in the parish of West Calder and Jean Wardrop in this parish gave 1/10/0 John Jack in the parish of East Munkland and Jannet Bell in this parish gave 1/10/0 William Cleland of Hairshaw and Anne Stevenson in Know noble both in this parish gave 3/0/0 Totall of proclamations since last clearing of accounts 38/10/0 Decmr 2d Robert Martin in this parish and Jannet Russell in the parish of Carlook gave 1/10/0 Decmr 17th Rob? Hi Margaret ! So, Christmas at the Tower o' "Hawborr" (Hallbar) ! That should be interesting ! The nearest Station on the Lanark / Glasgow (main) line is Carluke which has extensive 'park and ride' facilities right next to it. The Tower has good parking facilities and is about 3 minutes or less of country road driving from the station. I can't say the Clyde Valley will be at its best at that time of the year (short daylight, cold, bare trees and probably wet / sleety weather) Are you researching in the area ? Perhaps I can help ... Hi Margaret I am sure someone more local will advise better but as far as I can see the nearest station is at Carluke approx 4 miles away from Crossford The Tower looks a beautiful place to stay Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 06/12/2014 16:24, Margaret McNab via wrote: > We will be spending Christmas in Halbar Tower this year. No turkey here. Chicken Soup with Rice was my supper, and this morning, I made pancakes with yogurt, apricot jelly and maple syrup. Coffee and Apple with Orange juices. I am thankful it is now cold and the annoying neighbour's blinding spot lights are out. This link will help to explain why St. Andrew’s Day is celebrated in Scotland November 30, and why the Saltire now takes precedence over flying the Union Jack (flag) on public buildings. Why ‘they’ don’t erect two flag poles to represent the whole of the U.K. seems too simpleminded to some! Oops! No opinion asked for, but...! Maisie http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Andrew%27s_Day

Well, nary a peep from any of those with Scottish Blood flowing in their veins for this special day. Too much turkey for some, too much BLACK FRIDAY for others, or just that everyone forgot? Ruth

If you are researching in Lowlands Scotland, you may find something of interest in this book. Yes, it is large. I downloaded it, turned it into a searchable .pdf file then burned it to a DVD and placed it in my Drop-Box account to enable access from wherever I happened to be - with a few spare minutes. (Just need to load it to my laptop for speedy access and I am set for months). http://www.astro.ubc.ca/people/scott/book.pdf Gail
On this Remembrance Day: In addition to the Labour Corps’ contributions during WWI, not too much of note is made of the massive contributions of the British Merchant Navy when 30,000 mariners lost their lives to u-boats and other enemy ships during WWII. My father’s cousin a few times removed, Captain Herbert Norris Johnson, M.N., had a few ships blown out from under him, but he survived and retired to a quiet life in Kirkcudbrightshire. His first wife was from Finland and his second wife a first or second cousin...but they were old dears by then so no one was going to worry about inbreeding! I am trying to do some research in the NAS records to see if I can find anything about Captain Johnson’s service pre, during and post WWII. He must have earned some recognition to be chosen to lay a wreath at the Cenotaph, London, along with a member of royalty at that time, as I have noted before. He and his Finnish wife had daughters, so his surname was likely bypassed if the daughters married. Is it in Sweden that the wife’s name is carried on? Maisie
