    3. Cod liver oil is extremely good for you. It contains adequate amounts of vitamin A and D, and large amounts of omega 3 fatty acids. After World War I, Britain found that far too many would be soldiers were too malnourished to be worthwhile as soldiers, so they made some changes in the national diet. They made sure every British child got a certain quantity of orange juice, eggs, and cod liver oil each week. It worked - health of British children improved immensely. ??? Industrial tonsil removal operations ????!!! Honestly! When I was a child tonsillectomies were standard operations; I had one at age 5 and a nurse pounced on me every time I cried. I woke up crying. They did sensibly give the children ice cream, however (atleast if they didn't cry), not cod liver oil and orange juice. I'm trying to imagine drinking orange juice after having tonsils removed! I expect I was too woozy from the surgery to have eaten the ice cream even if I ever got some. It was good for preventing strep throat. Not much else. It sounds like your family was fairly poor, though not too poor to get you the snake oil remedies of the day to protect your health. What icky memories I have of cod liver oil and orange juice In 1938 my brother and I had our tonsils removed at Stobhill hospital (located at 133 Balornock Rd., Springburn, Glasgow, for those who find death notices in their genealogy research at this address). I was ‘fair affronted’ at the notion I might need a bath before being taken to the ward and my assigned bed. I remember looking at a bath, among more than a few, full of steaming water and the nurse deciding I didn’t a dunk with soap and water. I wonder how many poor wee souls were deemed ‘dirty’ and were ‘sanitised’ accordingly. The next memory is of a ‘mass production’ line where we poor souls were lined up to receive a shot to knock us out. It must not have been effective enough as I remember fighting to remove the oxygen mask before I was sent to bye-bye land. Mercifully or not, the next memory is of a raging thirst and a very sore throat. The maids in hospitals back then were the equivalent of LVNs here, I suppose, and were always present in the ward. I asked for a drink of water, but instead was given a glass of orange juice, or so I thought. I drank it and then, horror of horrors, this awful oily liquid. The orange juice was a ‘subterfuge’ floating on top of this cod lover oil. Yuk! The first sip of this cod liver oil and that was the end of ever putting orange juice in my mouth again until well into adulthood The connection between orange juice and this yukky cod liver oil was not easily overcome. Ten days later (no in and out here when one has one’s tonsils removed), my brother and I were sent home, but not before I told my second Big Lie when the nurse asked if my throat hurt. Not hurting at all, said I, though it still felt raw! I couldn’t wait to leave Stobhill after this experience with the cod liver oil ‘con’ with orange juice. (On this, six months later I was in Ruchill (fever) Hospital with diphtheria, where I spent a marathon 10 weeks recovering, so having my tonsils removed did not offer immunity.) In our house, my mother did not spoon out cod liver oil to build up our bones and fortify vitamins, but we were given a soup spoon of white Scott’s Emulsion which had a fairly mellow taste, with no discernible cod liver oil! Incidentally, Amazon advertises Scott’s Original Emulsion (white) at $26.97/bottle. Even today, that seems a bit steep, and would have been completely beyond my mother’s purse, all things considered moneywise, back in the days of the flood! Note: Ruchill (fever) hospital 1891-2007 is no more. Stobhill hospital 1902 – present. Marie Curie Hospice Marie Curie Cancer Care has a hospice at Stobhill. The charity built a new hospice which was opened in January 2010. The 30-room hospice replaces the charity's old building in nearby Belmont Road which cared for more than 1,200 patients and their families each year. The old hospice has now been demolished. (Some useless info per Google: In Newfoundland, cod liver oil was sometimes used as the liquid base for traditional red ochre paint, the coating of choice for use on outbuildings and work buildings associated with the cod fishery. In Tübingen, Germany, drinking a glass of cod liver oil is used as the punishment for the loser at the traditional Stocherkahnrennen, a punting boat race by University groups.) 3. Matt McGinn sang about the Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice and indeed when I was young my mother gave us a spoonful of the same every day. I have even heard of Syrup of Figs and Glycerine as a home remedy, but I came across an advert from 1934 in a local paper which looks like a recipe for sale was taken regularly as it appeared in every edition. Cream Emulsion of Cod Liver Oil In Combination with Hypophosphites of Lime and Soda Prepared by a perfected process ensuring a preparation of excellent, high standard for building up and strengthening the whole system. Full Bottles 1/3p and 2/3p billy

    3. Glad you enjoyed, Maisie. I note that "rammy" is considered Scots Gaelic. My (Irish and German) inlaws used that word a lot to describe kids' behavior, and I always assumed it was from "rambunctious". "Infra dig" is wonderful, I'm going to have to add that to another favorite Latin saying, which an episcopal priest had on his desk: illegitimi non carborundum, which he told me meant "don't let the bastards grind you down". At our local township Board meetings, we use "aye" when voting. I think that is pretty common here still, no? In some areas of the South in this country, it's very difficult understanding the accent. And then sometimes speaking on the phone..... My daughter lives in Florida, has inlaws in Alabama, my brother lives in Georgia, and it varies greatly, the accents you hear there. It all makes life and travel more interesting - as do your posts, Maisie! I enjoyed reading the link, Carole. As I've remarked before, local words and expressions were discouraged when I was growing up, especially in the schools...just infra dig. (Origin: Early 19th century: abbreviation of Latin infra dignitatem 'beneath (one's) dignity'.) Only now (with this big pusch for independence by the Scottish Nats), does it seem acceptable to use colloquialisms and local words and expressions. Not to mention there are some schools where Gaelic is being taught. In the Republic of Ireland, I believe Erse is taught as a standard. To repeat again, there was a huge rammy (Word Origin: perhaps from earlier Scot rammle row, uproar) in the newspaper when it was reported that the judge in the Sheriff Court upbraided a young Glasgow lass for replying Aye, instead of Yes to the judge's question. Here, Robert Burns, in Scottish literary circles, to this day is commended for saving the Scottish language from inroads of Standard English. Maybe this judge never read Burns. As we would say, the Glasgow patter or speech pattern is 'murder polis,' and my fault with retaining the local dialect to the exclusion of 'speaking proper' is that others outwith Glasgow/Central Belt find it difficult to understand. this dialect. Lest we have Glaswegians on this list jumping all over me on this, don't kill the messenger, but try living somewhere else, such as California, where, even in the USA, the speech pattern in this state is considered 'mellow!' Pleasant and not hard on the ear, and very easy to understand! 3. 3. Right off, I can't help you with your research, sorry. The name Ferrie caught my eye, however, and I am wondering if maybe Catherine Ferrie might have come from Ireland...just a supposition, of course. For Dodd: http://www.ancestry.com/name-origin?surname=dodd (Scottish Gaelic for George: Seòras, Seòrsa, Dod, Deòrsa. ) For Ferrie: Ferrie Name Meaning: Scottish spelling of Irish Ferry. Except a Francis Ferrie (that spelling) who married my mother's great-aunt was from Ireland and was R.C., I believe. For Dalton: It is of Old English origin, and the meaning of Dalton is "from the valley town; the settlement in the valley". 3. I've found that Glasgow City Archives at the Mitchell Library are definitely the go-to place for information about cemeteries and burials. I believe they now hold the data that used to be with the City Council. Earlier this year, they found the burials of my grandparents for me - they both died in the 1950s in the Gorbals but I had failed to find them in the nearest cemeteries, whose records I explored, with difficulty, on film during occasional visits over several years to the Mitchell. But this year, the staff searched a cemetery database they have on computer (not available for public searching) and there they found my grandparents and my uncle Robert buried together in Cardonald Cemetery, not at all near their home in Crown Street. So, ask the Archives, that's what I suggest. You'll find them by googling. 3. Hello Linda and List, John McLetchie died 10 August 1882 at Greenside Lane in the Gorbals aged 62. His wife Margaret Walker died 10 June 1888 in Garnardhill aged 65, not sure if this may give a clue if John draws a blank. He had lived in various areas of the town since at least 1851, so not sure what his home parish was, or were you just buried in a particular place ? Any help much appreciated. 3. If you've got the date then you could look in the local papers or the Glasgow Herald for funeral notice which might give place of burial. Wylie and Lochhead were the main city undertakers ...I don't know if their records are accessible in the Mitchell.
