    3. Do I remember! Of course, being the 'office type,' such 'patter' would never have crossed my lips. Another expression at the jiggin' (public dancing) was for the male to ask a prospective dancing partner, "Ur ye dancin'?' with the rejoinder, "Ur ye askin'?" If the couple hit it off, the male would then ask , "Can I gie ye a lumber?" This to mean, can I escort you home. If the 'asker' lived too far away, he'd escort his dancing partner to the tram or bus stop and progress from there, or not. Many a time, when the last bus ran at 11:00 p.m., I'd take the tramcar to Springburn then hoof it up the hill to Balornock with my 'lumber.' This seemed to discourage some 'asker,' as it meant having to catch fewer buses that ran on the hour after midnight. John Duncan, who contributed so much on this site to places and descriptions, described Glasgow as being built on drumlins, hence it was a bit of a hike up from Springburn to where I lived in Balornock, N.E. Glasgow: :::Glasgow is built on a moderately hilly landscape formed by marine deposits and some 180 drumlins, most of which are north of the Clyde with their higher sides to the north west and their 'tails' to the south-east. Its geology also includes large amounts of coal and iron ore though today the total area is primarily developed for urban use (77%) with little than 15% occupying open countryside, the smallest proportion of the 32 councils areas. Glasgow's climate, like much of the west of Scotland, is usually cloudier, slightly warmer and much wetter than the rest of Scotland. The city was extended several times to take in nearby villages and neighbourhoods. The main additions were in 1846 when Anderston, Bridgeton, Calton, Gorbals, Kelvingrove and Woodside were added to the city, in 1891 when Govanhill, Hillhead, Kelvinside, Maryhill and Pollokshields were included and in 1912 when Cathcart, Govan, Partick and Pollokshaws entered the city boundaries. Post-World War Two planning initiatives involved the creation of numerous council-owned high-rise flats on the city's outskirts, the renewal of city-centre housing and the Glasgow Overspill plan which moved several hundred thousand people to nearby New Towns, such as East Kilbride, Cumbernauld and Irvine.::: Maisie "Ah'm no' dancin' ony mair (pronounced merr) so don’t bother yer ginger askin' me!" -----Original Message----- From: Ken Mathieson via Sent: Friday, December 04, 2015 12:46 PM To: lanark@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Lanark] Fw: Scottish Word for Today 12.3.2015: Expressions Hi All, 'I amn't' may not be a unique Glasgow usage, but 'ahmurnae' surely is - as in the expression "ur ye gaun ra jiggin'?" - "Nawahmurnae!" 3. Just goes to show how insular one can be. The use of 'I amn't' is obviously a 'universal truth' throughout the U.K., but totally unused, shall we say, on the other side of the Atlantic. I have never of the use of 'I amn't' even by 'hillbillies' who reputedly have retained many older words and expression from the U.K., but which are no longer used by the general population. 'I ain't' seems to cover all, and is used as emphasis by some standard English users. Thanks for broadening my 'education,' Nivard. I have long lived south of the border, and although I too come from newton Stewart, I’m not really aware of the word reversal thing. However, when we abbreviated "I am not” we would say “I amn’t” instead of the English “I’m not”. I still say this and it’s probably the main part of my speech that betrays my origins. 3. Thanks for all the transcription regarding New Zealand. I'm still looking for my FORRESTS from Hamilton area, Lanarkshire. Family story tells me that Alexander Forrest arrived N.Z. about 1864, sent for his wife and family of nine to join him. When they arrived at the docks and saw the ship that would take them, some of the older ones said "no way" and stayed in Scotland. I am descended from the only son of that family who stayed. All others have history in the Otago and Oamaru areas. Love the Lanark list. Jeannette

Mr James Henderson came to Port Chalmers 18 years ago in the Wild Deer, and has resided in this district ever since. He was a native of Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire, and previous to coming to this colony was well known in the parishes of Carnwath and Lesmnhagow, Lanarkshire, where he resided for many years. He has enriched the colony by the fact that eleven sons and daughters are settled in New Zealand, and their offspring and their children's offspring add considerably to our industrious population. His grand-children alone number nearly 80, and the tree has therefore borne many branches. Nine of his children are settled in this district, and are well known, one resides in Timaru, and another (Mr David Henderson) is settled in the North Island. The funeral will leave his late residence, Coquet street, to-morrow, for the Oamaru Cemetery. Timaru Herald, 30 December 1920, Page 7 OBITUARY. MR JAMES YOUNG. Full of years and after a long and useful life, the late Mr James Young, well known in the early days as a storekeeper at St. Andrews, passed to his rest on Sunday last at the residence of his eldest daughter, Nurse Lawrie, Elizabeth Street, Timaru. The deceased was born in 1834, in Haddingtonshire, East Lothian, Scotland. He learned the trade of a black; smith at Home, and came to New Zealand in the ship Cartsburn in 1874, landing at Port Chalmers, where he found his first employment in this country. From Port Chalmers he came to Timaru, where he worked for a few years, and in 1878 he set up in business as a blacksmith at St. Andrews. He carried on this business till 1887, when he sold it to one of his sons, and in partnership with another son went into the grocery business at St. Andrews, the firm being known as J. Young and Son, general storekeepers. When Mr Young first went to St. Andrews the township consisted of a small public, house and the stationmaster's residence, Mr Young, who had been living retired for many years, was married in 1858 to Miss Strain, of Lanarkshire, Scotland. His wife died in 1897. Mr and Mrs Young are survived by four sons and four daughters, twenty grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Cyclopedia of New Zealand, Canterbury edition. He was brought up to farming, and in 1867 came to New Zealand under engagement to the Levels Land Company, for whom he brought out a valuable stallion, "Iveno." After a time Mr Irving was appointed manager of the farming department, and held the position for fifteen years, when he bought 309 acres of the Levels estate at Albury. He has since increased his holding to 1775 acres, known as "Brown Hill." In 1899 he took a pleasure trip of seven months to England, and brought to New Zealand a number of very valuable draught stallions, two of which, "Sandy Erskine" and "Agitator." have been champions ever since coming to the colony. North Otago Times, 20 August 1892, Page 3 Death of MR JAMES HENDERSON Another old identity, ripe in years, and respected by all, passed away yesterday morning at the age of 78. Mr Irving also owns the stud draught horses "Reformer" and "Brown Hill." and has acted as a judge of draught horses at nearly all the agricultural shows throughout Canterbury. 1. [Lanark] Scottish Word for Today 12.3.2015: Expressions
    2. Maisie Egger via
    3. Scottish Word for Today December 3, 2015 Expressions: A friend who hails from Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire, sometimes changes the word order around in a sentence, as an example: “Weeks they have been there.” Some areas in this part of Southwest Scotland were once (Irish) Gaelic speaking. As there was a lot of traffic between Ireland and Scotland, one wonders if the English speech pattern was influenced by Scottish Gaelic, Erse, or if this is just regional. (Take note, Glaswegians, Erse is herein used with a capital E, and is not in reference to one’s bahoochey!) In Glasgow, word order was also changed around as in “What like is it?” Again, as Glasgow, during and after the Irish famine in the mid-1800s, was inundated with thousands of Irish ‘refugees,’ bringing their own manner of speech and Erse, it is a question of who influenced whom in sentence structure with words sometimes used backside foremost. Personally, I was somewhat taken aback when I came to this side of the world and was questioned/corrected as to why I would ask, “What like is it?” instead of “What’s it like?” Another difference in word order is the expression “Ye’re a lang time deid. ” which would be more likely expressed elsewhere as “You‘re dead a long time.” in Standard English. It’s not quite the same as the Scottish version which is a caution to get on with whatever you are doing now for there’s no time left. Note: More on rammy from Lanark lister cmchouston: tramash (stramash) and stooshie. Maisie

    1. Re: [Lanark] Peter SMITH b 28 Jun 1803, Glasgow, Lanark, SCT. married Jane POLLOCK 1830. Looking for their children?
    2. Jo Ann Croft via
    3. You can use http://www.freecen.org.uk to look up the family in the 1841 & 1851 census records. This site does not have the later census records transcribed. This should give you the names/ages of living children as of 1841/1851. A search in http://www.familysearch.org for children of Peter Smith & Jane Pollock gives only two official records. Peter Smith b 20 Dec 1837 Old Monkland Andrew Smith b 10 Jan 1840 Old Monkland User submitted tree records give the following additional children born in Old Monkland: Thomas b 1830 Robert b 1832 Agnes b 1834 Jane b 1841 Margaret b 1843 The 1851 census adds two additional children: Marion b 1845 Andrew b 1848 There does not seem to be records for these births in the Old Parish Records which is the main source for BMDs prior to 1855 in Scotland. This is usually due to lost records or a move by the family to one of the dissenting churches. To look for deaths and marriages after 1855 you should go to http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk which is the source for Scotland birth, marriage, death & census records and many others. It is a pay to view/download site, but the rates are very reasonable and the images are great. I should also point out that there is a partially documented family tree (Gibson Family) on ancestry.com for the family. Be careful as there are other poorly documented ones there also. 3. Nivard, I think you and Malcolm out to be given an honour by the Queen. After all, if Elton John can be given a BE or other for plunking on some piano keys and not singing all that great, your contributions to genealogy are more productive! Looking for their children? Hi Olwyn I would start with the census A quick search for Robert SMITH born 1833 +/2 years finds two in the 1841 census , only one has a brother Thomas and he is 10 in 1841 Please note the 1841 does not have as much detail as later census The ages are rounded down to the nearest whole five for those above 16, birth places are either in county where enumerated (Y) or not in county where enumerated (N) Also bear in mind the transcript may have errors in and is itself a transcript of a transcript, the enumerator transcribed the household schedules onto the forms we have access to today and from which the transcripts are made The following does not prove its your family but suggests that it may be Name: Peter Smith Age: 40 Estimated birth year: abt 1801 Gender: Male Where born: Scotland Civil Parish: Old Monkland County: Lanarkshire Address: Calder Worky Gaspel Row Occupation: Furnace Man Parish Number: 652 Household Members: Name Age Peter Smith 40 furnace man N (not born in Lanarkshire) Jane Smith 30 Y Thomas Smith 10 Y Robert Smith 9 Y Agnes Smith 7 Y Peter Smith 4 Y Andrew Smith 1 Y Parish: Old Monkland; ED: 9; Page: 2; Line: 1030; Year: 1841 The easiest way to get the page image is to visit scotlandspeople, armed with the above it should cost you 6 credits The Robert above was according to the 1841 census, born in Lanarkshire I found nothing on either a Robert Pollock SMITH b1833 +/- 2 years anywhere (but he may have adopted the Pollock later) or a Robert SMITH b1833 +/- 2 years re Airdrie What appears to be the same family in 1851 Name: Peter Smith Age: 47 Estimated birth year: abt 1804 Relationship: Head Spouse: Jane Smith Gender: Male Where born: Dundee Parish Number: 652 Civil Parish: Old Monkland Phillimore Ecclesiastical Parish Maps: View related Ecclesiastical Parish Town: Calder Iron Works County: Lanarkshire Address: 15 Bridge Row Occupation: Furnace Keeper ED: 21 Page: 3 Household schedule number: 8 LINE: 8 Roll: CSSCT1851_171 Household Members: Name Age Peter Smith 47 furnace keeper Dundee Jane Smith 44 wife of East Kelhark?
