    3. The following was posted on Facebook by my niece and nephew (Glasgow and Coatbridge respectively). The Glesga patter might be a bit challenging for those not in the know, but it ‘resonates’ with those of us who grew up when Hogmanay was celebrated in homes before everything went commercial with tickets sold to street parties in George Square, Glasgow and Princes Street, Edinburgh, for example. Steak pie was the pièce de résistance on Hogmanay for first footers. This culinary tasty food is still a tradition and is very popular as queues lined up around a butcher’s shop in Cathcart Road, Glasgow yesterday to stock up for Hogmanay. Maisie -------------------------------------------------------------- A Glesca Wean's Hogmanay By Helen Ross Sittin’ in mah goonie Face scrubbed well Ma sister therr beside me We’re waiting fur the bells. 3. Could it belong to your grandfather's wife? Or his mother? -----Original Message----- From: lanark-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:lanark-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Linda via Sent: Thursday, 31 December 2015 5:20 AM To: lanark-l@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [Lanark] family mystery bracelet Hi all Thanks to Ken and Susan for their help. Unfortunately I replied to them offline, not through the list, so just to reiterate: the bracelet I inherited is oval, about 6.5cm (at its widest part). It fits on my wrist (18cm), so is definitely an adult size, not child-size, although it is quite small. It is engraved A.N. 27/6/94. I was told it belonged to my great aunt, but she was not born until 16 August 1895. My grandfather, Archibald Nisbet, was born on 3 June 1893, so I thought 1894 would be too late for a christening present. Ken suggested that it might be a christening date rather than a birth date and that the year date could be wrong, as it could have been made many years after his christening. Maybe it was given to my grandfather as a 21st present to give to his future wife? I think first of all it might be worthwhile me taking it to a jewellers to see if they can date it for me. Maybe it is older than I think. It has a hinge and a push-in clasp, and looks more feminine than masculine, as half the bracelet is decorated in stars (very pretty). It has no markings. A question for the list: how do I find out my grandfather's christening date? I looked on the Valuation Roll Ward Map (1913-14) for his address at the time of his birth, 70 Sandyfaulds Street, to see what churches were still nearby at this later date, hoping they would have been there when he was born. There are several different ones, including, UF church, Cong. Church and Est. church. Is there any easy way to find out his christening date, or would I have to look at individual church records for the area of his birth? Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Re my great-aunt Agnes - another family mystery! Family legend is that she ran away with a (?married) man and was never heard of again. The family put an advert in the Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia), (and presumably other newspapers but this was the only one I have found), on 21 August 1918. This was after the death of her father, Stewart D Nisbet - "Unclaimed Money, next-of-kin and heirs wanted". The rest of her siblings had to wait a number of years before her portion of the inheritance was distributed to them. By putting the advert an Australian paper, I presume the family thought she might have run away to Australia? Twp of her siblings ended up in America, so she could also have eventually joined them there? Her full name was Agnes Violet Carson Nisbet. I think though that this mystery will never be solved! Question: would there be police records still in existence in Glasgow at the time of her disappearance? Any other suggestions? 3. My great grandfather was a ploughman, who moved from Kintyre to Barrhead outside Glasgow to work on a farm at Low Auchenback. He ended up as a Waterworks labourer working for the Gorbals Water Works, later owned by the Glasgow Corporation Water Department at Barrhead/Darnley. My GGG GF in 1861 is 'Surveyer Corporation Water Works'. He died in 1864 as 'Clerk to the Water Commissioner', so looks to have been employed by the City Council. But thats a whopping daily commute from the bottom end of New City Road, so I will also have a look closer to home. Perhaps there were Council Offices nearby ? Wiki says : The Milngavie reservoir is visited by tourists and walkers. The reservoir is made up of the Craigmaddie and Mugdock reservoirs and was opened in 1859 by Queen Victoria.[13] It is the main supplier of water to the city of Glasgow and can hold up to 548 million gallons of water Cheers Andrew ----- Original Message ----- From: "Maisie Egger" <campsiehills@sbcglobal.net> To: "Andrew McCletchie" <andrew.mccletchie@gmail.com>; <lanark@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 29, 2015 4:12 PM Subject: Re: [Lanark] Help with 1861 Transcription > https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milngavie_water_treatment_works > > Andrew, for all the time I lived in Glasgow the Glasgow Waterworks were in > Milngavie (pronounced MilGUY from the Gaelic, no doubt. > https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milngavie ) > > If you go to Google re Milngavie, it might help you with photos, etc. > > Of course, I could be leading you astray and maybe your forebear worked in > a small local waterworks...but again, Milngavie was the main waterworks > for Glasgow. > > I should add that Milngavie and Bearsden are rather 'nice' communities and > we used to make fun of any hoity toity people by saying that they came > from MilnGAVIE, instead of the common pronunciation MilGUY. > > Maisie > > -----Original Message----- > From: Andrew McCletchie via > Sent: Tuesday, December 29, 2015 3:06 AM > To: Nivard Ovington ; lanark@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [Lanark] Help with 1861 Transcription > > Thanks Nivard, that transcription fits in great with other information. > > I cannot read the last two words of his occupation, but 'water works' it > is > ! > > Oh No ! 3. I used to visit Gorbals Waterworks which I think was up in Drymen. Or was that in Milngavie he ponders? I would imagine a water works man might also deal with sewers. If you think of Bazalget in London... Forgive any mis-spellings. Trust you are well Andrew. I'm a "lurker"nowadays as I have set genealogy on a back burner whilst I'm so busy at work. 3. Linda, Rather than a birth date, might it be a christening date? Ken Harrison North Vancouver, Canada -----Original Message----- From: lanark-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:lanark-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Linda via Sent: Tuesday, December 29, 2015 2:11 PM To: lanark-l@rootsweb.com Subject: [Lanark] Family mystery Hello all I inherited a bracelet, oval, about 63cm at its widest, decorated with stars. It is engraved A.N. 27/6/94 (inherited it before 1994). I was told that it probably belonged to my great-aunt Agnes Nisbet, but she wasn't born until 16 August 1895. My grandfather was born in June 1893. I thought it might be a christening bracelet, despite its size, but can't find anyone in the family with this birth date. Is there someway I can find out all babies born on this date in Lanark? I've tried searching for Nisbet for Glasgow in 1894, but with no luck. Many thanks, Linda ------------------------------- WHEN REPLYING to a post please remember to snip most of the earlier message. Be sure the reply to address shows as LANARK@Rootsweb.com.
