Scotlandspeople has your answer. Helen Davidson Cassels is coming up in the index as being born in 1894 in Lanarkshire. Her birth cert should give you the date of her parents marriage as well as the other info. And that marriage cert should give the names of Helens grandparents. You can find birth, death, marriage and census info on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It is the official government site for viewing/downloading the information. You will get the actual registry pages with all available information for the BMDs. It is a pay to view/download site but has very reasonable costs. All such BMD records in Scotland give the mother's maiden name. As for the location of Low Hill, you will get that from the birth record also. Thanks for the interesting links, Maisie. I note in the text that the name Johnston is lumped in with "son of" names eg, Donaldson but I believe that the name Johnston is derived from John's toun or John's town. The English Johnson is a "son of" name. All the Best, John (Johnston)
I have an line from Fife which started out as Kingo, changed to Kenzie and then McKenzie. The name changed with the language used and the "ear" of the recorder. These things often come from the Scots Gaelic spelling, which could be very different, and the local Scottish pronunciations. It was pointed out in an article on St. Patrick's Day, that most people in the U.S. who had ancestors living in the U.S. before 1800, have some Scotch Irish ancestry, whether they know it or not. Many people also have Protestant Irish ancestors who came later, from both Scotland and England. In addition to the Catholic Irish who emigrated in the mid 19th century.
