Hi ... I wonder if he was involved in the Carluke trip to NZ - about 1863 - in the 'Aboukir' - following the NZ goldrush ? Large numbers of 'younger folk' some related, some not left here with the Brownlee sawmillers trip to the Pelorus Sound ... I note that he was part of the Kirkton ( Carluke UP Church, Station Road, Carluke ) and perhaps his wife's 'Forrest' families were those of Robert Forrest, Grain Miller at the Low Mill and, with the Brownlees, one of the founders of that Church and main participant in the Pelorus expeditions. Some of the younger Forrest sons went out to the goldrush ( prior to the Aboukir trip ), and it was their enthusiasm for the quality of NZ timber etc that started the later Carluke emigrations. Some of the Forrests returned to Scotland, some stayed. The Low Mill families were later farmers and now run the Forrest Estate wineries near Marlborough, NZ. As I recall, it was one of the Youngs ( ? Owen ? ) who was involved in erecting a memorial to the Carluke emigrants in that expedition at Carluke, NZ -or was it at the Blackball Sawmill site at Havelock ? One of the Brownlees married a lady from the farm ( ? Hill of ) Kilncadzow ( pronounced Kil-kay-gee here ) whose family were also lime quarriers up there. Maybe some exploration of the cemetery records for Havelock and the Rai Valley histories ( see Havelock Museum ) may help. You may also want to check Claire Smith's work at the Brownlee Family site on :- www.brownlee.com.au If you would want a pic and the history of Kirkton Church, Carluke,( founded 1835 ?) let me know - we're still an active and lively congregation .... ! BTW : Just remembered - is there not a house , named 'Havelock' in Douglas Street, Carluke (here) that once belonged to the Youngs or the Martins ??? ( needs more research ). David YOUNG b 1817 LKS. Married 1839 Mary FORREST. He was the son of Robert YOUNG and Catherine BROWN. David and Mary had 5 children - Robert, Agnes, Andrew, Catherine, David. Census 1851 - he was a stockman at Kilncadzow Lime Works Census 1861 to 1881-inclusive he completely disappears although the rest of the family are present and his wife is listed as 'married' Census 1891 - Mary finally calls herself a widow. Happy Hogmanay, 2010, to those of Scottish descent & those that wish they were! >From rainy Vancouver, B.C. CANADA Ruth
Hello Jeannette, Family traditions will differ, but will to some extent reflect local society. In my youth and for some years beyond, Christmas was a normal working day. Come New Years Eve, work went on until quite late. At home, members of the family would arrive from afar to make the occasion a family reunion. Up to midnight we would have a spring clean of the house, so that we started the New Year perfectly. The first drink would be at midnight. Father would go to the front door and open it to let the New Year in. He would go outside, look at the moon and turn over the coins in his pocket thinking of a prosperous New Year. You wished other people "A Good New Year" hoping that they would have good health, wealth, and happiness in the next 12 months. The modern tendency is to suggest that they have a good New Year party. After that we would visit the neighbours and they would visit us. Then the grandparents would stay in the house to look after the children and we would head off to visit friends at the other end of town, walking, of course. There the party would go on until six or later. Then we would walk home. The New Year's Day turkey would be put in the oven, and we would go to bed. For my first New Year away from home, as the youngest aboard a Royal Navy ship, I struck sixteen on the ship's bell, instead of the usual eight to mark the end of the First Watch, 8pm to midnight. A Guid New Year to yin and a'. Hi I do think you have a real mystery here. I have done some digging (just as you have) and noticed that he is stated as alive (or not deceased) when his children marry. Options: They separated and therefore she still classified herself as 'married' but how did she manage financially without a man's wage and young children. He was in an asylum He immigrated and she was supposed to go and then decided not to - maybe he sent money home and that is how she managed to buy 10acres of land There is this immigration: David Young Estimated birth year: abt 1816 Age: 41 Arrival Date: 25 Jan 1857 Arrival Port: Melbourne, Australia Departure Port: Plymouth Ship: William Nationality: Irish and Scottish Maybe an Australian lister could help more, Good luck Julie ----- Original Message ----- From: <gemwood@xtra.co.nz> To: <LANARK@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 01, 2010 8:45 AM Subject: [Lanark] YOUNG David - born 1817 LKS > David YOUNG b 1817 LKS. Thank you Charles. I had found in digging my notes that Thomas was indeed Elizabeth's brother. But I have never seen this information before. Thank you for sending it. Robert MacKay and Sarah Jane or Jeanne Lindsay MacKay are the parents of Thomas and Elizabeth MacKay. There are in deed from Ireland, perhaps being born in Naghill, County Monahan area of Ireland. Prior to coming to Cambusnethan I think about the 1847-1850 time frame. As the family is there for the 1851 census. So I changed up the Subject line a little to include the additional surnames which now seem to connect to my Elizabeth MacKay Brown and her brother Thomas MacKay whom married Mary Smith whose mother was a Ballantyne.
