Thank you Iain for your helpful reply, I checked out General Wolfe's biography online to find out which Regiment he may have commanded in Glasgow, only to find that his service in the 1750s.. - definitely too early for the soldier I am searching for. Thanks for letting me know about Gallowgate and the location of the Baptismal records of children of soldiers.. Thanks Bob, It all seems to be a guessing game. Sorry about not putting the address down for the group. Robert and Margaret seem the most likely for Mary's parents, which I was looking for. On her death certificate her parents were unknown. The FH Library is an hour away from Taupo and I don't drive that far now. I was helping out at the Library a few years ago. All the best and happy New Year ! Allison.
Hi Elizabeth Henry Baxter b.1837 d.1890 husband of Ann Scobbie b.Abt.1839. His parents are Susan Baxter and John Baxter. Susan is the daughter of Andrew Baxter and Jean Thomson, who I mentioned in the original e-mail. Do you have a connection to this Baxter line? G'day Michael, Thanks for your enquiry. I have checked my files and have not found a link to your CLARKSONs. The CLARKSONs have been at Douglas for over 300 years and it is possible/probable that there has been the odd stray to other parts and because they are not a major line, my research of "missing" people is not very complete. Good luck in your further research. Bill michael paton wrote: > Bill > > I have a MARY CLARKSON born in Ayrshire. As a couple of you are aware, shortly before Christmas I returned this list back to Christine who has been List Admin since then. As I had already explained, I was only "Acting" Admin in order for her to take care of some personal and family issues. However, for her own reasons she has since offered the list back to me on a permanent basis and the transfer back occurred yesterday. Last I heard Christine was going to remain a subscriber for the immediate future, but that is a decision for her to make herself. I have made something of a New Year's resolution to once again work with the subscribers of this list, and bring us closer to some posting more in tune with generally accepted list "netiquette" and other practices. Nothing has changed from what I've already mentioned in the past, so there is no point in going back into it here, but if you have any questions feel free to contact me at any time using the email address below. Also, note the stated list topic at the bottom of all list posts as well as other information that will be helpful in showing you how to use the list more effectively. I look forward to working with you in the new year. David E. There were barracks in Gallowgate at that time. It is said that General Wolfe's troops were stationed there before going to Canada and taking part in the Battle of Quebec. While in Glasgow they were used on building projects, including the building of St Andrews on the Green Episcopal Church. The baptismal records of that church are held in the Glasgow City archives at the Mitchell library. They record the baptisms of the children of a lot of English soldiers. Iain McKenzie Glasgow
Ian, Any chance of finding out if there were any Anderson brothers who were officers under General Wolfe? I've come across some oral family history which indicated that we had 3 Anderson brothers in my grandmother's Anderson line who were with Wolfe, one supposedly when the general died. I wrote to Battlefield Canada in an attempt to find out, but I have received no response at all which makes me think that their funding is minimal. Good hunting, Cliff. Just to say... we likely have found our man...National Archives Scotland records - 1855 David YOUNG was tried for forgery, outlawed and put to the horn. Hence he spent the rest of his days 'fugitived' and died before the 1881 census! I love the naughty ones... and thank you to all who offered suggestions. Nyle James

My long-distance carrier in the U.S. has an "international calling plan" that I am on for a small monthly fee. If you subscribe to this plan the current rate to make a call to Scotland is 8 cents per minute, so 15 minutes is $1.20. I don't know what the rates would be without this plan but I imagine they would be much higher.
