The English Church refers to episcopalians e.g. Scottish Episcopalian. Sorry I can't help with a name for the actual church. Good morning list, Just wondering if someone could tell me when a child is born on IGI states surname but no Christian name does this mean that the child died or still hadn't been given a name? Thanks. Glenys in Aust.
Hi Glenys Can you give the example, it sounds rather like a patron submission which can vary from fact to fantasy Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) PS its always best to post to individual lists as cross posting can cause problems for admins > Good morning list, Just wondering if someone could tell me when a child > is born on IGI states surname but no Christian name does this mean that > the child died or still hadn't been given a name? > Thanks. > Glenys in Aust.
Hello John See the piece on Reformatories at the bottom of the page here, which mentions the Industrial School at Rottenrow. http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/towns/townhistory338.html Industrial Schools were aimed at giving training to children and young people who had been left destitute either by their parents dying or deserting them. The mission, I suppose, was to turn them into God-fearing adults and to keep them from turning to crime. The Mitchell Library in Glasgow may keep records for the school. Hi List, Jeanie (Jane) Mitchell, born Glasgow 1863 of Irish descent, lost her father (Francis) to Typhus in 1868 and, according to the tale relayed through her granddaughter, became an orphan. I have found a Jeanie Mitchell aged 7 in the Glasgow census 1871, as an inmate in the Girls Industrial School in Rotten Row. Could this be her? Does anyone know anything about the school or where I could get further information? John Newton Kyme
Hello Barbara It depends on why they left Ireland. My maternal Irish (Protestant) GG Grandparents were married in Glasgow in 1840. My paternal Irish (Catholic) GG Grandparents arrived in Scotland in the mid-1850s. T C Smout in his book, "A Century of the Scottish People" says: "The census of 1841 listed 125,000 Irish-born individuals in Scotland and in the famine of 1848 there were up to 1,000 new arrivals a week from Ireland into Glasgow......The vast majority of migrants arrived from the Province of Ulster". As far as I am aware there are no records of migration from Ireland to Scotland, such as passenger lists. Many Irish records including the earlier Irish censuses were lost in a fire in Dublin in the early 1920s. So looking for Irish ancestors in the early 1800s is not easy, if not impossible. What is available can be found on the Irish Family History Foundation's site at http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/ It is a pay site, and in my opinion, is not cheap. The charges are in Euros. You can also find the Irish Civil Registration indices on the Family Search site at http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1408347;p=collectionDetails Rhoda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara Black" <barbarablack@blueyonder.co.uk> To: <lanark@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 14, 2010 4:15 PM Subject: [Lanark] Irish Families in Old Monkland > Hello List > > I am new to the list but have been researching my husband's family > tree for a long time. Making your tree PRIVATE in Ancestry doesn't mean it is, really, as Ancestry takes all the details and puts them on One World Tree, without your permission, so people can find it there anyway. Also, when the town of birth is, say London, and no country, Ancestry adds any other London (like London, Canada) to fill in the gaps, quite often, so it may not be the person giving false information, it is the automatic templates Ancestry has when the whole address is not included. I don't see any harm in people copying a family tree FOR GUIDANCE but they should use other people's trees as a guide. Quite often several people copy a tree that is wrong, and they don't check the facts. I find others' trees useful, but don't trust any, they just show me where to look to check. One thing to guard against is giving someone rights to look at your 'private' tree on Ancestry - they go overboard and I have found my own details on someone else's public tree! Ethics, of course, is to stop at the grandparents when putting a tree on line. Have a look at www.tribalpages.com - there you can post your tree and it IS private. You have a password for yourself to edit the pages, and you can make another password for people you want to invite just to look at it - all under YOUR control. Gillian South Australia
Hello List I am new to the list but have been researching my husband's family tree for a long time. Yes Annie it has been happening to me for a long time and I too am completely fed up with it. I have been happy to share my research, but for sometime I have been receiving back form others as it they did id themselves and even before Computers became popular I received it back in my own handwriting ( where others I had sent it to had photo copied it and send it on ). Others I sent it to have put it on the Internet. They won't take it off either and don't seem to care that crooks can get it and take over one's identity. My family are very conscious of Identity fraud and have asked me not to put things about them on the internet ( especially their photos) So I understand how you feel Regards Marie in Australia Everything has it's beauty, but not everyone sees it Confucius
Hello Ian I was intrigued to see that you are researching Mc Seveneys. My husband's great grandfather was William James McSaveney/Mc Seveney who was born about 1850 in Ireland but married Elizabeth Robertson in 1871 in Coatbridge and whose children were born in Old Monkland. Any connection with your McSeveneys? Barbara On Jan 14, 2010, at 1:48 pm, Ian Rodney wrote: > Hi Carolyn > > I have had a similar problem. Where is your tree? Mine is on Ancestry and I had the same problem so I went into the settings and made it "private". I don't mind sharing info but it is nice to be contacted first. Hi Carolyn I have had a similar problem. The lady in question contacted me via Ancestry regarding my grandfather's brother. She claimed to be his granddaughter. I have a comprehensive set of BMD records for the branch of the family and when I probed for more information from her the E mail contact died. It's sad when people use false information - what are the trying to prove ? At the end of the day they are wasting time, money and effort but they must get some sort of satisfaction out of it. It takes me back to my early days of searching for information and receiving some shocking information. One particular episode was in relation to another brother of my grandfather, whose wife died in 1905 and he remarried in 1905. Further probing revealed that his wife died in June 1905 and he remarried in the April. It was a bit of a shock but further probing revealed 2 cousins with the same name, one's wife died and the other got married. It was a salutary lesson in not jumping to conclusions and proving my facts. Sadly some people seem to spend their time jumping to conclusions and those of us who genuinely search can only feel a sense of sadness for them. I suggest you forget about the person because at the end of the day she is just wasting her time.
