Hello Lindsey In 1851, there was a Martha Mackie aged 51 born Ireland, lodging at 85 Bridgegate, Glasgow. She was a seamstress. Other lodgers included a Margaret Mackie, 36, born Glasgow and John Mackie, 18, a Flesher, born Glasgow. They were lodging with a family named "Marmock" according to the Ancestry transcription. The Head of Household was one David Marmock, 32, a Dealer, born Ireland. His wife Margaret, 34, was also born Ireland. Hi again Testing the goods seems to be quite a common occurrence <g> (then and now :-) What you need to do is get the relevant certs from Scots people, it could be there are two couples but only the certs are likely to solve that Never take any transcription as perfect Unless you have evidence to the contrary there is also the chance the James BROWN had a first wife also an Elizabeth Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > The first son's birth is indicated as 27 Feb. 1859. Should I discount > one or the other date to be wrong? Would they have waited > that long after the birth to marry??? How about JAMES BROWN Spouse: ELISABETH MACKIE Marriage: 20 APR 1860 Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland M116281 1855 - 1875 6035516 REGISTER Film NONE As an extraction it should be reasonably sound A copy can be ordered from the LDS or the film orded into your nearest LDS FHS Or Scotlandspeople should have it Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Elizabeth MacKay to James Brown (daughter of Robert and Jane Lindsay > MacKay) > appears to have been married about 1858. > > Can anyone confirm this marriage by a look up? > > Thanks > > Brown children all born between 1859 and 1878 > > James Brown was supposed to have died about 1881. > > Thanks
I don't appear to have any Robert Moffat's in the line I am doing. There was a Thomas Moffat brother to John Moffat who had his own family in the 1851 census but no Robert born yet. BOYD, sorry, no connection to my line of BOYD, although my line has basically been fleshed out, and i can't confirm the connection I have to previous generations. IE: Gavin Boyd m. Jane Cooper around 1798, this is the earliest date I have. i have a strong possibility for Gavin's parents, but since Gavin died before 1855 I don't know of any way I can confirm it. LINDSAY. Quite strangely I have a Lindsay/Moffat marriage in my line, although it is the next generation down: John Lindsay m. Janet Moffat 1900, Wishaw. And apparently no connection to the one mentioned. Janet is the daughter of Robert Moffat and Helen Walker. John is the son of James Lindsay and Agnes Calderhead. Hi Tricia, We've stayed a number of times at the Argyll Hotel--it's within walking distance of the Mitchell Library, there are some good eateries in the neighbourhood, their breakfast is terrific, public transport is convenient--highly recommended. John Moffat son of James and Mary Moffat married Mary Anne Lindsay in Bonke Manse 1857. Thomas Moffat age 26 and Jane his wife in 1851 are living next door to John Moffatt and parents in Cambusnethan Parish for this census. Anyone related to these Moffats?
1851 a Martha Mackie or MacKay born in Ireland guessing to be aged 50-80. She was supposed to have traveled from Ireland to Scotland with her family. But she does not appear on the census in 1851 with them. Maybe she is living somewhere other than Cambusnethan ED 14 pages 7 and 8 where her family is. Does anyone have access to the 1851 census of Lanarkshire? Thanks
Charles Brown and Agnes Stone I think this Charles may be the son of James Brown and Elizabeth Mackie (MacKay brown) born 1875. That were married in 1860. I have indications his son (toddler) Charles Alfred Brown died 26 Sept 1912 buried in the Cambusnethan Church Yard. He was 5 years 6 months. Abode says Motherwell. Any connections anyone? Lindsey
JAMES GEMMELL attended the birth of one child of SAMUEL PATON and MARY CLARKSON (my family). MARY PATON b 27/12/1814 Witnesses were WILLIAM CLARKSON and JAMES GAMMELL. I felt that a witness to a birth should be some sort of relative and searched.I found JAMES GAMMEL b1763 in Fenwick, Ayr first and then "JOHN GEMMIL married JANET PATON in 22/03/1747 in Fenwick, Ayr". Samuel and Mary had also started in Kilmarnock or Fenwick area. . JOHN GEMMIL and JANET PATON had three daughters: MARGARET GEMMEL christened 06/04/1746 in Fenwick, Ayr HELEN GEMMEL christened 25/01/1756 in Fenwick, Ayr JEAN GEMMEL christened 10/02/1754 in Fenwick, Ayr . JOHN GEMMIL and JANET (Paton?) GEMMIL had a son James christened 23/01/1763 in Fenwick, Ayr . "JAMES GEMMELL Weaver in Glasgow Married EUPHEMIA CLARKSON residenter there 17/01/1814." James would be 51yrs old could have been married before too. . Does anyone know of these Gemmels? I have not been able to track EUPHEMIA CLARKSON's family yet.
The first son's birth is indicated as 27 Feb. 1859. Should I discount one or the other date to be wrong? Would they have waited that long after the birth to marry???
