    1. [Lanark] Scottish regiment cap badge mystery solved
    2. Maisie Egger
    3. Good afternoon, all, on the Lanark and Wigtownshire lists. I've been trying for the longest time to find out what Scottish regiment my mother's young brother James Cruikshank Brown served in in WWI. I checked the Scottish army badges online, but the photo I had of the badge was off kilter and I couldn't match it too well. The badge had a square of tartan behind it, but as a few Scottish regiments also have this, including the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders (my brother's regiment), I still couldn't be sure which regiment he had served with. I then went ferreting around Google and found a POSTAL address to write to in Stirling. I received a very nice letter from an Alan Kostric who identified the badge as the H.L.I. (Highland Light Infantry.). Eureka! Alan, of course, suggested that if I had James Cruikshank Brown's army number that would help to find out where he was posted. (I don't.) However, as he died after leaving the army they would not have any records of him. He hoped that this would help me in my search for answers to keep James Cruikshank Brown's memory alive "as so many are now forgotten." The website for Scottish Regimental Cap Badges www.regimentalcapbadges.co.uk This is going to the Lanark and Wigtownshire lists as I do not have some e-mail addresses. Many thanks, therefore, to Nivard Ovington, Frank McGonigal, Jim Flemintgon and others on the Lanark list, my relatives, as well as the "resident genealogy whiz" on the Wigtown site, Malcolm Lockerbie, who tried to identify the Scottish regimental cap badge for me. Thank you everyone, for all the time and effort you took to try to identify the cap badge. The next move is to try to find out if he belonged to the Glasgow H.L.I. (the same as my father), and whether this little nugget of information will help further when I go to the National Archives U.K. One more question" Was the toorie on the H.L.I. bunnet, red, green, navy blue or khaki? Maisie

    3. Hi I've just obtained 30 free credits from Scotlandspeople through the following link. http://www.ancestralscotland.com/roots/ I think it may apply as a promotion to people in Australia and New Zealand. A friend alerted me to an on-line ad in the Sydney Morning Herald which only appeared intermittently. Good Luck Ella Ross

    3. Hello All The last couple of days I have had the pleasure of having my cousin (we both have the same great grandfather) out from Edinburgh. He brought a photo I have not previously seen and we hope someone can assist. He lived in Dundee and is dressed on tartan trousers with a dark tunic with white stripe down centre with buttons, white belt with "flap pockets" over hips. The back reads "taken in 1899. I was a private in 3 Batt. V.B.R.H. ..." Can anyone name this regiment? Douglas

    3. Hello Lindsey The marriage index on Scotlands People has a marriage between Alexander Renwick and Mary Mackie registered in the district of Cambusnethan in 1868. You can view the image of the marriage certificate on the site. See: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It is a pay site but the costs are reasonable. 3. Hi all, Quick response to two e-mails. BOYD, sorry, no connection to my line of BOYD, although my line has basically been fleshed out, and i can't confirm the connection I have to previous generations. IE: Gavin Boyd m. Jane Cooper around 1798, this is the earliest date I have. i have a strong possibility for Gavin's parents, but since Gavin died before 1855 I don't know of any way I can confirm it. LINDSAY. Quite strangely I have a Lindsay/Moffat marriage in my line, although it is the next generation down: John Lindsay m. Janet Moffat 1900, Wishaw. And apparently no connection to the one mentioned. Janet is the daughter of Robert Moffat and Helen Walker. John is the son of James Lindsay and Agnes Calderhead.
