I have someone on my family tree who seems to be an interchangeable Gibbons/Givens as well as other variations! Married in Hamilton in 1856 aged 22 (in the 1861 census for Blantyre she is shown as having been born in Shotts, later that changes to Blantyre) she is shown as Rosanna Gibson. On her marriage certificate her parents are given as John Gibson and Margaret Nisbet but on her death certificate they are John Givens and Elizabeth Smith. On sons William and Robert's and daughter Margaret Todd's marriage certificate she is shown as Rosan Gibson. On daughter Elizabeth's death certificate her surname becomes Govan, On daughter Ann's birth certificate she is Rosan Gibson, on marriage certificate she is Rosan Gibbons. On daughter Agnes' birth certificate she is Rose Ann Gibb, however, on Agnes' marriage certificate she is Rose Ann Givens. I have tried to find out more about this lady (she is my great great granny) but I think she will remain forever an enigma on my family tree. Pamela Harrow >From: CEHAUGHEE@AOL.com >My husband has family from England in the County Durham area named Gibbons >or Given's. Both spellings seem to be being used both in census and on documents.
Frank See: http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/towns/townhistory2806.html The text is an extract from a Gazeteer published between 1882 and 1885. It mentions a Roman Fort. Apparently this site is, or was recently, occupied by a factory (Marley Tiles) and some excavation work has been going on there, without a great deal of success according to another reference to Cadder that I saw in my Google search. Greetings all During the 1891 census, my g-grandparents, Francis EARLY and Lillian nee KING, were living at Park Villa, Cadder East, Lanarkshire. Francis was a retired civil servant. I like to believe that he'd been able to save a few bob and could put his feet up in a leafy suburb, away from the bustle of Glasgow. Can anyone tell me what Cadder East was like in 1891? Best wishes Frank Early South Africa

My Keer/Keir families were in Cambusnathen and started out in Old Monkland. Also Pettigrew and Wheelan/Wheelen/Wheeling were in that area. Clarks and Muirs also. Most started out as weavers then to the coal mines and also worked on the canal out of Langloan/Coatbridge. Going from 1800 to present day in some cases. However, the Gibbons/Brown/Short families were as far as I can tell in the Northumberland and Durham areas of England. Kaye In a message dated 2/10/2010 2:20:31 P.M. My husband has family from England in the County Durham area named Gibbons or Given's. Both spellings seem to be being used both in census and on documents. I have a Robert Gibbons married to a Margaret Brown on June 1, 1829 in Houghton-le-Spring. She was born in Houghton-le-Spring in 1808 but do not have her parents. Robert was born in about 1807 and I have England. Their daughter Margaret Brown Gibbon's married John A. Short June 30, 1849 at Easington County Durham at St. Mary's church. She and her husband and daughter immigrated to the USA sometime after 1851 and also Robert and Margaret Brown Gibbons also immigrated.
