I have a brick wall that I would like some help with. My 2^nd G.G. was AGNES CAMPBELL. She was born 1821 in Inverkip, Renfrewshire, and died 15 Feb 1904 in Glasgow. She married ROBERT CAMPBELL PATERSON on 11 Jul 1841 in Glasgow, Lanark. He was the son of ANDREW PATERSON and SUSAN WATT. He was born 30 Oct 1817 in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and died 14 Jun 1882 in Glasgow. I cannot seem to find any birth or baptismal record for Agnes, so I have been unable to trace her line. Can anyone help or give me some ideas. I live in Canada so research is only on-line for me. Tricia Datené

Hi Listers, Before I send out this ED, I need to let you know just how unusually this enumerator approached his task. First, birthplace detail tends to be cryptic, although at times has more detail than usual, as in a few cases mentioning the county in Ireland of birth. Usually though, its just a parish or sometimes just a village name, with no county. The strangest habit though is that if the head of household is a coal miner, then his spouse and all his childreb, sometimes down to infants, are coal miners also! Obviously not the case. Well, at least he remembered to fill his pen with ink, which is more than I can says for some. Smile emoticon Jim Bundy

Hi there ... To search for 'property transactions' ( purchase, sale, lease, mortage ) at that period should be fairly easy ... You will need to visit either Hamilton or Lanark library - to consult the 'Sasine Abstracts' which are, I think, indexed by Persons and Places at that time ... The Abstracts contain a registration date, the names of the people involved, and a brief description of the land etc involved. They also have a Reference number which will let you ( should you have time to visit the GRO in Edinburgh ) find and get a copy of the Transaction Deed or document which will include layout plan etc. You can also order the copy remotely ... Maps ( large scale ) of the area can be viewed via the National Library of Scotland Maps Section website and copies obtained if required. This assumes that the property was 'owned' , and not part of a short term rental ... G Russell Carluke, S. Lanarkshire
G'day Tricia, I too have spent a couple of years looking for a Walter Paterson I believe mine became a Marine engineer or Locomotive builder. He was born in Peebles 1831 but I think he went to Leeds then Glasgow building Locomotives before he went to sea as a marine engineer. His 2 older Brothers migrated out here to Australia 1854. Any of this ring any bells with you? Regards Col
Hi Tricia, You're right in your supposition: New Ed Rd is indeed New Edinburgh Road, Uddingston and, while it still exists, so much has changed in the vicinity in the last 109 years. Brookesby is not a neighbourhood name, so it must have been the name of the house. I'll take a walk tomorrow and have a look at the names on the Victorian houses known locally as West Cottages. All the other buildings along New Ed Rd from the 1901 have disappeared, so fingers crossed. His name was Walter Paterson, and he is listed in the census as living at "Brookesby, New Ed Rd", Uddingston, Bothwell, Lanarkshire. There is no house number given. I am thinking that "New Ed Rd" is an abbreviation for New Edinburgh Rd. Does anyone know where would I find property records (property taxes, deeds, etc.) for this property? Hi Glen, Thank you very much for looking. I have the 1841 census for this couple – 1841 census Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire - Aughtifardle-gate 649 Ed 8, page 4. H Aitken 35 M Scotland Gardiner Ann Aitken 35 F Scotland David Aitken 13 M Scotland Cotton HLW Ap John Aitken 12 M Scotland James Aitken 11 M Lanarkshire, Scotland Daniel Aitken 7 M Scotland William Aitken 2 M Lanarkshire, Scotland Alexander Aitken 10 days M Lanarkshire, Scotland In the above census James jnr should be 5 yrs the child that would have been 11 was Alexander but he died 1 day before the second Alexander was born. And I have the 1861 census for them. Ann died in 1865 and James and the last remaining children left in Scotland emigrated to Australia. It is her birth that has me stuck. I have already gone through www.ancestralscotland.com/roots/ and spent my 30 credits. I may have to use the credit card Thank you again for trying.
