Hi I am trying to locate the WEST YETT FARM. On the 1851 census it is listed under the Parish of Carnwath. It is shown between the farms of Westdyke and Westshieto . There is no other identification on the page that might suggest where they are located in the Parish. I cannot find West Yett on any map that I have or on Google. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks Frank Easton Sherwood Park Alberta Canada +6c
Hello List I am seeking an Alexander Reid ,Alexander was the son of James Reid and Janet Hamilton who were married in New Monkland IGI M116516 the record gives the date as Sep 1845. Alexander gives his age as 25 on his marriage certificate on 29th Dec 1883 to Elizabeth McIntyre . I have just run out of Credits on Scotlands People. I found 8 Alexander Reids on the 1861 census the youngest was 1 the oldest 62. I tried the 6 year old first, wrong parents ,the 14 year old gave the same results. If SKS has access to the 1861 census could they please find the family of James Reid and Janet M.S. Hamilton on the 1861 or the 1851. Thank you in Advance Bob
Good Afternoon Does anyone know if St Mungo cemetery common ground is in the Necropolis now. I assume this would be an unmarked grave. Samuel Paton was buried there in 1841. Michael
Hi Douglas The service records for anyone who served in WW2 (including those records for those who also served in WW1) are not available to the general public , if memory serves its 2020 when they are released You can apply for them (charge was £30 last I heard) if you are the next of kin and the person concerned is deceased (proof is requested) the serviceman themselves would get them free If you want more on that let me know Regarding your war bride, first they would most likely have married Britain and may appear in the passenger lists on findmypast (outgoing) many also came back for visits or permanently and may appear in Ancestrys passenger lists (incoming) It may also be worth searching for specific ships associations Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) Hello Nivard Thanks for your reply. As mentioned in my letter I have two other naval relatives to investigate. One is my wife's grandfather who served on the HMS Vindictive in WW2 but it is unknown what ship he served on in WW1 (his brother, Archibald, was killed at Arras with the South African Infantry. His son named Archibald was a bomber pilot in WW2). The other naval query relates to my father's cousin. I don't know which ship he served on but I remember his wife relating the story of her self along hundreds of other "war brides" arriving in South Africa after the war. Thanks again. Douglas

Hello List Does anyone have information on these couples William Hamilton and Agnes Stewart had a son William born abt 1848 when he married in 1873 he was a Fish Curer. He married Elizabeth Gillies on 05 Sep 1873 in Bridgeton, Glasgow . At the date of the marriage they both lived at 68 Muslin Street. This is the address that Alexander Reid was living when he married in 1883 so I think they must still be living in the house . Elizabeth was the daughter of Alexander Gillies ,Cabinet Maker and Agnes Falconer. Any information Will be most Welcome. Bob
Irene O'Brien, Senior Archivist at Glasgow City Archives, gave a talk on Glasgow Poor Law records at the SAFHS Annual Conference two years ago. She told us then that Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen had all disposed of their Poor Law records many years ago, before family history research had become so popular. The Glasgow records are a marvelous resource which are well worth consulting because they give an insight into the family life of those applying for Poor Law assistance. Iain McKenzie Glasgow
Thank you for this info Des. Your work re: the Poor Relief Records has helped so many of us and it is much appreciated. Following some of my Lanarkshire ancestors back, some lived for a time in West Lothian (Whitburn; Linlithgow). Do you have any knowledge of those poor relief records or what repository one might consult to search for them? Hello List I am trying to find Hugh McIntyre occupation Tobacco Spinner. I have this information from the marriage certificate of his daughter Elizabeth to Alexander Reid son of James Reid, Iron Foundry Labourer and Janet Hamilton. the marriage of Alexander and Elizabeth was on 29th of December 1883 and took place at 10 Old Dalmarnock Road, Glasgow., the same address as Elizabeth gives as her Residence on the marriage certificate. I have Hugh McIntyres wife on the 1881 census as Mrs Elizabeth Hamilton. Elizabeth Mcintyre was born to Elizabeth Gillies 12 May 1860 in Central District Glasgow. I wasted time on Ancestry looking for the marriage of Hugh McIntyre and Elizabeth Gillies , I have now found a marriage of Hugh McIntyre and Elizabeth McIntyre on 15 Dec 1865 in Avondale,Lanrkshire after another daughter was born Ann C116441 to them both Elizabeth was only born to Elizabeth on the same IGI number. Hugh died during the next few years as Elizabeth Gillies married William Hamilton 05 Sep 1873 in Bridgeton, Glasgow M119201 . Does anyone know of any one of the people listed Thank you in Advance Bob
Hello All I am at present trying, with the assistance of my mother -in -law, to put names to old photos that she acquired on the death of her cousin. Although she and her sister were taken in by here mother's sister and husband on the death of her mother in the 1930's she did not know any of the family background. She always says he was a very kind person whom she was very fond of. They lived in Ladysmith in South Africa. Anyway, amongst the photos we found a "Yankie Postcard" photo of him (the uncle) and two others in their naval uniforms and dated 1914.Unfortunately their names were written in ink and are indecipherable. However their hat bands indicate that they were from the HMS Pathfinder. I looked up this ship for WW1 (there was another in WW2) and on Wikipedia it says:- "HMS Pathfinder was the lead ship of the Pathfinder class scout cruiser, and was the first ship ever to be sunk by a torpedo fired from a submarine ( the American Civil War ship USS Housatonic had been sunk by a spar torpedo)... "Pathfinder was sunk off St Abbs Head, Berwickshire, Scotland on Saturday 5 September 1914 by the German U-21... "There is significant confusion regarding the number of survivors. On 6 September The Times declared that 58 men had been rescued but that four had died of injuries. The fact is that it is impossible to determine how many were on board that day, adds to difficulties but research indicates that 268 personnel were on board plus two civilian canteen assistants. There were just eighteen known survivors:" (The survivors are then named but no mention is made of the person, in the photo, I am looking for - Gilbert DEACON ). Could he have been transferred to another ship or any other explanation? Which organization or naval records office could assist me? I have two other naval queries to sort out but they can wait in order to avoid confusion. Douglas South Africa

To Rhoda, Lorraine and Jenny I want to thank you so much for the information on JAMES PATON transported (1832)to Australia(14yrs). You ladies gave me so much information to check out that I was overwhelmed for a bit. THANKYOU. Here is an interesting bit I found about the hardships this transported man found on board ship. "Katherine Stewart Forbes" A barque built at Northfleet docks in Kent in 1818 to 'second description first class' for the Chapman company. She weighed 457 ton.She made four visits to Adelaide, but only two were from England. It seems she stayed in Australian waters for a few years and was variously employed in the sea-going transport trade. In February 1832 she sailed from Woolwich bound for Van Diemans Land (arriving on 16 July) carrying 222 male convicts under the command of Captain James Berry. An ill fated voyage to begin with as cholera broke out aboard her on the day she sailed from Woolwich, so she anchored in Plymouth Sound but was ordered to put to sea again after receiving medical supplies and the services of an assistant surgeon from the Royal Navy. She returned to the Thames Estuary and was laid up in Stangate Creek until almost the end of March before being allowed to resume her voyage. Of the 222 convicts aboard, 30 men developed cholera and 13 died before she finally set sail for the new land. JAMES went back to Sydney from there he possibly went to Adelaid. Search SA gazetted deaths 1845-1941 Surname: PATON Given name(s): JAMES Death date: 4 Mar 1878 Death place: On board ship, Port Adelaide Regards All Michael
