There was actually a station at Cleghorn. If you go to www.old-maps.co.uk and search for Cleghorn you'll see the station on the 1864 map so it was there at the time you're interested in. Also some more info from Groome's gazetteer, 1882: Cleghorn, a mansion, an estate, and a station in Lanark parish, Lanarkshire. The mansion stands near the station, on the right bank of Mouse Water, 2¼ miles NE of Lanark town, and is an old but comfortable edifice, surrounded by a finely-wooded park. Its owner, Wm. Eliott-Lockhart, Esq. (b. 1833; suc. 1878), holds 2280 acres in the shire, valued at £2554 per annum. The estate includes a romantic ravine along the course of Mouse Water; had anciently a chapel; and contains vestiges of a Roman camp, 600 yards long and 420 broad, supposed to have been formed by Agricola. The station is on the Glasgow and Carstairs section of the Caledonian railway, 2¾ miles W of Carstairs; and adjoins the junction of the branch line to Lanark and Douglas. A Findlay family lived at Woodyett Farm from the early to mid-1800s until 1957. My source for this had the farm in Lesmahagow but was incorrect on a number of locations for this branch. We discovered that some events actually happened in Cambusnethan. However, Carnwath is rather a stretch from Lesmahagow and I think I'm wasting your time on this! Lanark station would be the nearest to Cleghorn ... It's on a 'loop' connection to the main north/south line to Glasgow and at that time would be very busy carrying coal, farm produce and general traffic including even tourists (from the City, to the Upper Clyde Valley and the Falls of Clyde). Most of the 'rural' 'Big Houses' and estates would have the Coachman make an early morning 'run' to the Station to deliver the sucessful businessman owner to his offices in Glasgow ... and collect the mail etc. G Russell
Hi List. Sorry, me again! My g grandparents lived at the Cleghorn Gate House, when in June of 1867 they decided to immigrate to Canada. They had to go to Glasgow to board the good ship St. George. My question (and I think I know the answer but am not sure) how did they travel from Cleghorn to Glasgow. Was the railway running in Scotland at that period of time? When they arrived in Canada they sure could not hope a train to go to their destination, but I am not quite positive about Scotland. Appreciate your thoughts in this regard. Hi List: I found Woodyett on two maps 1. Explorer Ordnance Survey 335 Lanark & Tinto Hills Lesmahagow & Douglas as well as 2. Ordnance Survey Landranger Series, sheet 72 Upper Clyde Valley. Just a little west from Lanark Townsite ( but still in Lesmahagow Parish ( I think) you will find Kirkfieldbank. Lanark Road A-72 . West on that road from Kirkfieldbank to the first junction going left (south) . Follow that road and it turns west about 1/2 mile then you will find a road off the highway to your right about a 1/4 of a mile. That is the road that takes you into Woodyett. It does not say farm, however I would think that it would be Woodyett farm houses. To make sure you have the correct location, if you look very close to straight north about 1/2 mile off the A-72 road to the south you will see Linnmill. Another confusing thing to me is there is no "wood", however, perhaps there was when the farm was named. I hope these directions are clear enough however I get a little confused on the Scottish Road numbering system. I hope this helps. Regards Frank Easton Sherwood Park AB, CAN
If anyone on the List has happened upon any data (from Census or elsewhere) on the employees etc of the Omoa Fireclay Company (making bricks etc) or the Clelland Pottery Company ( making stoneware jars and bottles etc) I'd appreciate a transcription ... They might mostly be young women, or girls, and craftsmen 'Turners' or 'Potters' or 'Kiln attendants' etc. There were also 2 steam engines and stables on the site, so there will have been 'Engine keepers' and 'Stokers' and perhaps 'Carters' or stable lads ... ? Omoa Fireclay traded from about 1880. Clelland Pottery from 1895 to perhaps 1928. Thanks in advance ... G Russell

>From Wikipedia A yett (from the Old English and Scots language word for "gate") is a gate or grille of latticed wrought iron bars used for defensive purposes in castles and tower houses. Unlike a portcullis, which is raised and lowered vertically using mechanical means, yetts are hinged in the manner of a traditional gate or door, and secured by bolts attached to the yett, or by long bars drawn out from the wall or gateway. Hi and thank you Nivard and Frank Mc and hello to Kathryn. I guess we have a "West Gate" farm as well as a Wooded Gate Farm ??!! Makes some sense actually but does not really give us any clues as to location. Where Westyett (West Yett) farm is located it does not mean very much EXCEPT that at one time there may have been a sister farm called East Yett. Just supposition, but interesting. With all the woodlands in Scotland (actually I am very impressed) it does not give Kathryn any help. Sorry, but worth a try. Regards to all Frank Easton Sherwood Park AB, CAN
Nancy, somehow the replies to this list have changed over the years. Originally if you hit 'reply' it would go to sender, it then changed if you hit 'reply' it would go to the list, then if you hit 'reply all' it would go to both the list and the sender NOW if you hit 'reply all' it comes up with the list address twice and not the ORIGINAL sender! A pain having to check all the time as to where your email is going then having to delete the list address twice and cut and past the original sender's email address if you wish to repsond privately........... Very easy to get caught out if the brain isn't engaged, Jenny

AH - Bummer... Well, who knows...maybe we'll find a connection yet! Rod Hello Rod Sorry Rod it is not a Reid case but a Kinnaird vs Redpath. The case is between cousins in Midlothian ,Thomas Kinnaird of Edinburgh and Thomas Kinnaird of Glasgow vs Jacobina Thomson M,S, Kinnaird of East Calder as to who should inherit the Estate of Benjamin Redpath. Thomas Kinnaird of Glasgow was the winner. Hi Lanark List: I found it!!!! Thanks to Jim, Nancy Don and Fraser. If there was anyone else I did not mention I apologize. My great grand aunt (Helen Easton) was a 16 year old "House Servant" at that farm when the 1851 census was taken. Those times must have been different than ours. Her parents were living at the Cleghorn Gate House at the time. The census records are very evident that the children grew up very young in those days, kind of sad however is it any better now? I will have another question for the list shortly. Regards Frank Easton Sherwood Park Alberta Canada +8c

I don't always remember to use it but when I do I am always pleasantly surprised. One of my very close girlfriends from college was from Calgary. She is currently on leave but is getting ready to go back to Congo under the auspices of the Free Methodist Church. She has worked on and off there for years as a nurse and midwife. I was originally signed up with the Lanark website to help another friend find something on her Bisset family and locate a cousin. We did get in touch with her cousin - not through the internet or any technology, but through an old-fashioned letter sent to his previous employer. Funny! Have fun with google books. It is a great feature. I am sure that Google is Google where ever you are. I live in Sherwood Park Alberta Canada, a bedroom community of Edmonton Alberta. I often borrow books that I find on google through interlibrary loan. It usually takes a few weeks but it is worth the wait. I live in central Pennsylvania. Where do you live? Thank you very much. Nancy: I also tried Google before I listed however, (not being that familiar with Scotland) I could not find any hit that seemed to be in the same area. Now as far as the name, the only piece of evidence I had on the name was what I took off of the 1951 census which appeared as too different words. Don: Thanks Don, nice to hear from you again. I have pleasant memories of dinner there many years ago. (I do apologize to the rest of the list for that off topic comment). I appreciate your assistance and the map web site. I try to avoid those maps as the same comment as I put to Nancy. I spent about an hour trying to locate it without success because of my not being that familiar with Scottish landscape. But with the assistance that Jim gave I might be able to pin the place down. Jim Thank you very much. I should be able to find it now. A very good description. Again thank you Nancy, Don and Jim. Thank you, and I really do appreciate your responses. Hopefully they will enable me to add some more meat to the bones.
