We also send out condolences to Mattie and others who have missed and will continue to miss all that John Duncan did for all of us. I missed out on his CD or book. But I always read his writings of all the histories that he added to the Lanark list. He has been missed. Our generation is fast going who know this era of time. Stay in touch Mattie with the Lanark list as we will take comfort on knowing you are okay. Kaye In a message dated 3/12/2010 2:37:28 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, jenm@exemail.com.au writes: Today please take time to pause and remember our dear friend and Lanark List member John Duncan who passed away at 2.30am AEDST Friday 12 March. Our condolences go out John's loving wife and carer Mattie and their Family who have supported him not only for the past week and a half but since his untimely stroke where the Doctors gave Mattie no option but to have him placed in nursing care. As Maisie says, "He contributed so much to this list." I am SO glad I "ordered" his disc of his life story, for which I sent a donation. He was delighted that I asked him for a copy as I think he was down in the dumps that the house they were trying to sell was not moving. Mattie said he was lying down when my letter came with the dollars and it just perked him right up. Of course this was a year or so ago. This is not for any other reason than to tell you that sometimes small things can make a huge difference in people's lives, and so my "donation" meant a lot to John when he felt down, whereas his life story was a tremendous gift to me as it gave me a template for doing my own...maybe! John's contribution on many subjects and more importantly passing on his own social experiences of life and times in Scotland touched our lives through this medium. I had a story passed to me that only happened last week, this was from our list member John Brake..... Mattie had taken a box of beautiful chocolates in for the staff, she left the chocolates within John's reach while she went to find a staff member, by the time Mattie returned with the staff a few of the chocolates had disappeared, they all had a good laugh as John hadn't eaten for a week and chocolates he hadn't eaten at all over the last couple of years! In Remembrance We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name, In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. --Author Unknown-- To John Brake, "Thank You" for being there for Mattie and helping in passing on our wishes to John and for keeping us informed. Thank you for the heads-up on John's death. I've saved one of his posts for sometime and still refer to it from time to time. He was a great help and inspiration. He is missed. Sunset and evening star And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. (Alfred Lord Tennyson) ====== Well, we shall try to avoid moaning at the bar over the death of John Duncan, but instead rejoice in his productive life, and specifically what he contributed to the Lanark list. The many articles he submitted to the list over quite a few years helped many of us, even those of us born and bred in Glasgow, to become better acquainted with the city, its history and our roots. John must have spent a tremendous amount of time in his meticulous research for these articles. He also helped listers with particular questions to do with their family research. For those of us who would like to revisit his postings, go to the Lanark Archives. I am gratified that I have a copy of John's autobiography, or life story, on a disk. He was a few years older than I and I think he had it a little rougher in his growing up years, and so it was heartening to read of how he and Mattie finally found a new life in Australia after a false start.. He overcame his early struggles, learned a trade, and "made good" so that he and Mattie were able to enjoy a fruitful life in Melbourne. Though I believe Mattie was the prime gardener, their combined gardening efforts showed in the photos he sent me that their creativity was equal to any professional landscaper's. John was not just a very capable gardener and scribe, but he had many other talents, in that he and Mattie were accomplished ice skaters in their younger years, as another example. To use the old-fashioned phrase, John is now in repose. The stroke he suffered left him unable to speak or care for himself, and so we bid him farewell in his twilight years... with peace at the last. Thanks to Jenny Myers and John Brake for their kind consideration during John's struggle. Our sympathy and condolences to Mattie, their daughter and grandchildren, as John embarks on this final journey as he puts out to sea. Maisie

there's an entry which mentions a plan of the estate that included Woodyett in scotlandsplaces.gov.uk http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search_item/index.php?service=NAS&id=RHP3257 if you go to this site: http://geo.nls.uk/os6inch/google.html click on map, follow the earlier posted directions and when zoomed in reasonably close click on historic, you should then easily find a much older map of the area, you can then switch to satellite to see (if you're lucky) the area as it is now for further background on the general area you could try the statistical accounts but you'll need to know the name of the relevant parish: http://edina.ac.uk/stat-acc-scot/ to then locate lesmahago (there's an entry in the earlier 1790s account as well) http://stat-acc-scot.edina.ac.uk/link/1834-45/Lanark/Lesmahago/6/30/ Hope that helps n.b. if searching scotlandsplaces it's best to double-check you're in the right part of the country, there's more than one woodyett

>From a google search and this from Wikipedia *Glasgow Queen Street (Glaschu SrĂ id na Banrighinn in Gaelic) is a railway station in Glasgow, Scotland, the smaller of the city's two main line railway termini and the third-busiest station in Scotland . The station was built by the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, opened on 18 February 1842. Bob, That's because its from the collections account which lists the monthly payments received for the marriages, mortcloth rentals and the amounts distributed to the poor. The actual entry was on the 2nd Sabbath of September 1845 and states they were both of this Parish. Cheers!!!
