If anyone is interested, there's an exhibition of William Simpson's watercolours at Provand's Lordship in Glasgow. You can see and download some of them at this website: http://www.glasgowmuseums.com/venue/showExhibition.cfm?venueid=11&item id=91 I've downloaded some of them, including "The Drygate, near the Duke's Lodgings, Rotten Row in distance 1843", because I have ancestors who were living there around this time. Elizabeth I hope you don't mind me asking a few questions. What information do you have on Thomas Barr and his parents. I couldn't find a marriage on Scotlands People between a Thomas Barr and Jessie (or Janet) Burlee or Buslee. Was Thomas their only child? I am assuming that you haven't found his birth certificate as you say that he was born "abt" 1865. So how do you know the names of his parents? Do you have Thomas's and Jessie's death certificates? Rhoda
Hi Rhoda Yes it looks like the one i have,im looking at the original one at Scotlands prople.Thomas Barr aged 15 and Jessie aged 12 they are the first 2 entries on the original and in the next house which is still 35 union street(not lemon as i read it)is the ferguson family.I thought i had a match but alas not. This Thomas is a nightmare only been looking for him and his parents for 10yrs thankyou for looking into that for me,i will have to keep trying thanks elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- From: "CandROverson" <overson12@btinternet.com> To: <lanark@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 14, 2010 12:39 PM Subject: Re: [Lanark] 1881 census BARR FERGUSON > Hello Elizabeth > > I looked on the 1881 census on Ancestry. Hello Elizabeth I looked on the 1881 census on Ancestry. As trancribed by Ancestry there is a Thomas BARR aged 15 living at 35 Union Street, Kirkintilloch. He was an Iron Dresser. But this Thomas was living with his parents, David and Janet Barr and siblings Margaret, David and Jessie. No sign of anyone with a surname 'Ferguson'. Is this the same entry? There are a number of entries for a 'Thomas Barr' born around 1865. Today please take time to pause and remember our dear friend and Lanark List member John Duncan who passed away at 2.30am AEDST Friday 12 March. Our condolences go out John's loving wife and carer Mattie and their Family who have supported him not only for the past week and a half but since his untimely stroke where the Doctors gave Mattie no option but to have him placed in nursing care. As Maisie says, "He contributed so much to this list." I am SO glad I "ordered" his disc of his life story, for which I sent a donation. He was delighted that I asked him for a copy as I think he was down in the dumps that the house they were trying to sell was not moving. Mattie said he was lying down when my letter came with the dollars and it just perked him right up. Of course this was a year or so ago. This is not for any other reason than to tell you that sometimes small things can make a huge difference in people's lives, and so my "donation" meant a lot to John when he felt down, whereas his life story was a tremendous gift to me as it gave me a template for doing my own...maybe! John's contribution on many subjects and more importantly passing on his own social experiences of life and times in Scotland touched our lives through this medium. I had a story passed to me that only happened last week, this was from our list member John Brake..... Mattie had taken a box of beautiful chocolates in for the staff, she left the chocolates within John's reach while she went to find a staff member, by the time Mattie returned with the staff a few of the chocolates had disappeared, they all had a good laugh as John hadn't eaten for a week and chocolates he hadn't eaten at all over the last couple of years! In Remembrance We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name, In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. --Author Unknown-- To John Brake, "Thank You" for being there for Mattie and helping in passing on our wishes to John and for keeping us informed. Sincerely, Jenny - NSW Aus Maisie - CA USA
My condolences to Mattie. John's descriptions of Lanarkshire and its geography has been a boon to me, and to many others on this list... Thank you John Brake for keeping us informed.. Without the contributions of both Johns, this list is so much the poorer. RIP Gay ----- Original Message -----

My deepest sympathy to John's family on his passing. He will be at peace in heaven. John has been a great help to me in finding were my forebears trod, because of my lack of knowledge of the area and I kept many other unrelated articles, because of the historic interest! Kind regards Elizabeth

I wonder if we know what we have lost. A wonderful genealogist and historian, we all know that, but again, I ask, do we know what we have lost. I have no less than eleven messages that he sent to the list that I have retained. He was a friend of everyone and I am sure he must have helped hundreds in their search of their Scottish roots. He could add a bit of Scotland in everything he wrote. We shall all miss him. Maisie, thank you for the poem, a proper and perfect tribute. Our sympathies to his family and the Lanarkshire and Scottish genealogy families. Frank Easton Sherwood Park, AB CAN As far as the weather is concerned today, the sun is shining, but not as bright as it usually does.
John Duncan was a wonderful help and inspiration to all. I have saved stacks of material he posted. It was obviously a great joy in his life to 'discover' Scotland and pass it on to us. May he find joy 'on the other side'.
