    3. Is anyone researching the Burnside families of Lanarkshire? I have found a Mathew listed on Ancestry.com in the 1851 Scotland Census who was born in Ireland about the same time as my ggg grandfather, Samuel who immigrated to American in the early 1800's. There has been a discussion on the Mid-Antrim Yahoo mailing list about the travel back and forth from Co. Antrim to Scotland and I know the Burnsides were originally from Scotland - just trying to find additional family members - if possible Thanks for any help! Linda Holley

    3. Hello Catherine Just to add to what Jeannette and Don said in their responses, bmd records in Scotland before 1855 (when statutory registration was introduced) are not complete. For one reason or another many are missing. There is some background on this on the Scotlands People website. See: http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk/research/list-of-oprs.html Also, bmd records before 1855 were entered iu parish registers maintained by the local church. The amount of information recorded varied between parishes. There was no standard format and the information in the register may be very limited. Do you know if William and Catherine married before they left Scotland? I couldn't find a marriage for them on the marriage index on Scotlands People but bearing in mind the information in my first paragraph, this doesn't mean that there wasn't a marriage. And what about children? The names of children, and the order of their birth, may give a clue to the names of grandparents. It was customary to name a first son after the paternal grandfather, a second son after the maternal grandfather and a third son after the father. With daughters: a first daughter after the maternal grandmother, a second daughter after the paternal grandmother and a third daughter after the mother. The order of second and third could be reversed, in my experience. And people didn't always comply with the custom. 3. Hello Catherine, If you have traced your ancestors back to William and Catherine, and have an idea who their offspring were, I would suggest looking at Scotland's People. www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk This is a subscription site, payable by credit/debit card. You get 30 credits for 6GBP which is about $9. US. On there, you will be able to search for birth and marriage records, both from Parish Records, and statutory records. There is good information on the site as to how to search. I've had great success with Scotland's People, and will be glad to give you any help that I can. I hope this helps you. The duty was repealed in 1794 Once repealed some families had the children baptised as a job lot Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) >I have heard that a tax was levied on individual baptisms or christenings >around the beginning of the 19th century.
