    3. Thanks to you all for your help. I shall check all suggestions. As an aside, my darling cousin (who died in England in 1997) was adamant about her ashes being returned to Scottish soil - and they were. 2. Others might have better advice ...but I found the records of my few family members who died in England, and elsewhere, in the county/parish in which they died. Their death was never recorded in Scotland. Some did get a mention on the family headstone in Scotland as having died ENG, NZ etc. Nyle NZ

    3. Have you tried GRO? Now I heard, Jeannette, that as the C of E is the STATE church, if anybody dies, the C of E claims the person as one of its own, unless somebody comes along and says he's a Buddhist, or whatever. This has nothing to do with GRO, of course. I sent away to GRO for a marriage certificate of my great-grandfather from the South of Scotland who married this English woman in England, and there was no problem...got it by regular post within a few weeks and it was not overly expensive, just a few £s, if I recall. Of course if it is so recent as 1997, I can't advise you. I think you would still need to go through GRO if the person died in England (General Registers Office). I have not written to GRO for the great-grandfather's death certificate, however. I should. 3. Where are the test messages? I've seen only one... How odd that there have apparently been .lots of them for Admin to call a halt. Is there something wrong with the list, that they are not coming through to me. If this message doesn't come through the list then there must be something wrong. 3. Just a clarification, my request to refrain from posting test messages includes further discussion of test messages on list. Test messages are inappropriate and are needless. For general information, the list has been slower than usual during the past few days, so few messages have been posted, but if you need to confirm that you are subscribed to the list you can check Password Central on RootsWeb webpage for a complete list of everything you are subscribed to, or simply drop me a line at the address below. If you want to check all list posts to see if you have missed any, then the list archives will do the trick there, and you will find a link for that also on the RootsWeb webpage or by clicking the appropriate link at the bottom of all list posts. I hope this helps. David E. 3. Hello List I visited the North Lanarkshire Archives on Monday last. I was looking for Benjamin Willetts and Jane Davidson, I found Jane and Family in the Poorhouse with lots of Information on the Family, No luck with Benjamin. I then asked for New Monkland Poorhouse records ,they had the register so I looked at that and found Janet Hamilton Reid. She was registered on Feb 2nd 1859 ,beside the entry was page 294. Sadly the archives do not have the book with page 294 . Would anyone know where that book would be found. The archives were empty, the two of us were the only readers there , they have plenty of records to look at. A list of their holdings can be found at www.Scan.org.uk/ then go to search by Archive enter GB1778 and that will get you to North Lanarkshire Archives holdings Bob

    3. Hello Elizabeth I am not by any means an expert on military history but googling Royal Lancaster Regiment suggests that the Kings Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment had a connection with the Border Regiment because by 1959 the two had amalgamated to form the Kings Own Royal Border Regiment. See: http://www.armymuseums.org.uk/sot-infantry.htm The Kings Own Royal Regiment Museum is in Lancaster and I think they should be able to advise you what information the Regiment's records might hold on Thomas Barr. (It is interesting that he joined an English, rather than a Scottish, regiment). 3. Smyllum was originally know as Smellum, built between 1759 and 1763 by Dr. William Smellie, often called the first male midwife or obstetrician. He was born in Lesmahagow in 1697 and by 1720 was a surgeon and apothecary in Lanark, acquiring about 9 acres of land to the south of town. He practised medicine in London from 1739 to 1759, when he retired to Lanark and built up the estate. After his death in 1763, the name of the estate was changed to Smyllum and in 1792 it was purchased by Sir William Honeyman, later Lord Armadale. Later still it was purchased by the Catholic Church for a school. I believe that it operated as a hospital until the 1960s. It is now a country park, housing estate, farm & golf course. The main building was in ruins when I last saw it in 1996. 3. Hi Paul I have an Agnes Clydesdale, born approx 1822 in Ireland ( also married in Ireland ) who died on 16th December 1907, age 85, at Eastern District Hospital, Glasgow. Her husband was Arthur Burns who died in 1877 age 41. Agnes' s parents fronm her Death Cert were Alexander Clydesdale and Margaret Allan. I would assume that Alexander or his forebears were Ulster Scots but I have no further information at present. If any of the information tallies please contact me direct.
