Thought I should post the following url.........don't dismiss other cemeteries in this group if looking for those who might have immigrated to this area of NSW. Southern Highlands Cemetery and Grave Register http://www.hawkesbury.net.au/cemetery/southern_highlands/index.html Regards Jenny
The West Lothian Council have on their website a "Hame an Awa" section, scroll down to Shale Miners http://www.westlothian.gov.uk/media/downloaddoc/1799577/EmigWLDisplay It is interesting reading the whole webpage as it covers immigration to most countries during the mid 1800s. I know there are at least 2 who were members of this list that had very strong ties to Lanarkshire and Joadja Creek on the southern highlands of New South Wales. Leonie Knapman has researched this area very well and has written more than one book on the kerosene shale mine and the miners. leonieknapman@bigpond.com (I have no commercial interest only an historical and family one) Regards, Jenny Lake Macquarie NSW
Dear Listers, A while back there was some discussion of Joadja Place, Uddingston, Lanarkshsire, Scotland. I received the following email and thought others might be interested: ------------------------ From Carol Linden <helena18818@yahoo.ca>: My BRODIEs went to Joadja Creek, NSW 1881-1891 -- I have the 1881 and 1891 Scotland census -- four children were born to them while in NSW. After returning about May 1890 the family was in Uddingston. Their son JAMES BRODIE married Janet WILSON and another son, THOMAS BRODIE m. Jessie WILSON. Part of the info recorded about the time in NSW included: George and Agnes Wilson had been in Australia with Thomas and Mary Jane Brodie. They lived in Joadja Place, Uddingston; this place was named after the township in Australia where they had settled. Just a note to say that the assistance by the people on the Lanark list was absolutely great. I would say that I have accomplished about 90% of what I wanted. Thanks to Jenny, Hugh and Gay I was able to get the information on the immigration of James Douglas Campbell and a special thanks to Jenny for guiding me through a difficult web site (in my opinion). That is not a knock on Australia for have you ever seen a government Archival web site that is easy? Thanks to Jenelle I think I may be able to tackle the phone. No he was not in the second world war but was an engineer in the 1st. As I go through this exercise it is absolutely mind boggling how many of my fathers cousins (1st 2nd and 3rd) were in the war as was he. The information on those immigration papers is very detailed and certainly adds a lot of meat to the bones. Thank you all. Frank Easton Sherwood Park Alberta Canada +8c
> Hope you took note of Jim Bundy's Shotts Parish Register > 1707-1855 Note 66 Thanks, Margaret. I have done a bit of delving into the Shotts register, and I think Claud is probably one of mine, but I still need to do a bit more to confirm it. I think that ultimately all the various Claud Stor(r)e/i(y)s are named after Claud Naismith, who was an uncle of one of the earliest Stor(r)e/i(y)s. Best wishes Anne
Hi Anne Hope you took note of Jim Bundy's Shotts Parish Register 1707-1855 Note 66 1807 Claud Storie in Greenhill & Margaret Stirling his Spouse had a Daughter born there Monday the 16th day of Feby & Baptised 1st March Named Margaret Storie MargaretB Lake Macquarie NSW Australia
Tricia The death of a Mary Ann PATERSON, other name DAVIDSON, was registered in Skelmorlie, Ayrshire in 1923. She was 70, so the age is right. The image of the death certificate may be downloaded from Scotlands People. Between 1872 and 1901, Scotlands People has only 1 marriage for a Campbell PATERSON other than the one between your Campbell and Mary Ann, and that was with a Maria Burns in Maybole, Ayrshire in 1898. So he either remarried outside Scotland, or he 'lived in sin' with one or both of those other women. It appears from 3 successive census listings that he had 3 wives. I know for sure that the 1881 census is correct, as I have other sources for this. I also know that the 1901 census is him because he was the man who invented Camp Coffee. I am not sure about the 1891 census, although all the children on the listing appear to be the same. I cannot find any death record for his first wife, Mary Ann Davidson (born 1853 in Edinburgh according to family records). He married Mary on 12 Jan 1872 in Glasgow. There is a family myth that he ran off with his housekeeper. Maybe he did this twice? Can anyone help me to solve this interesting puzzle?
