    3. Believe it or not there was a Toll between Prestwick and Ayr too. ....Wish it was still there!!! Pat Chas -----Original Message----- From: archie gilbert <agillbert@tiscali.co.uk> To: lanark@rootsweb.com; Lanarkshire <LANARK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wed, 5 May 2010 16:18 Subject: Re: [Lanark] Toll Keeper Frank, In the old days, before roads were built or maintained, they were just rough tracks following the easiest route between two places. When the landowners got fed up taking all day to travel 10 miles in great discomfort, they paid to construct a half decent road. In order to recover their money, and maybe make some profit too, they installed a gate which could only be opened by the Toll Keeper who lived in a wee hoose next to the gate and he collected the monies due.The practice gradually was replaced when local authorities took over road building and maintenance. My GrGrandfather and then his son lived at Gunsgreen Toll near West Calder, which still stands, and the old lamp bracket for lighting the gate when somebody was travelling in the dark is still on the gable wall. Hope this sheds some light for you !! 1. [Lanark] Recording children of 2nd marriage if they are not descendants?
    2. Judith
    3. Hi Listers, I am interested to know how or if you record the children of a second marriage where those children are not descendants in the family tree? I have a rellie who married, the couple had three children then she died. The husband then remarried and had several more children with the second wife. His children from his first marriage are direct descendants in my tree but the children from the second marriage whilst not direct descendants are still half siblings to the children of the first marriage. Do you record them, and if so what format do you use? I use FTM 15. 3. Going to jump in here - I have always used Brother's Keeper program and it has always had the ability to add separate spouses and the children associated with that marriage. 3. Hi Betty, I think when you can get your FTM program out of the box and installed, you will find it is very easy to add spouses and children to those spouses. FTM will keep them all straight. 3. > I am interested to know how or if you record the children of > a > second marriage where those children are not descendants in > the family tree? I have lots of cases where my relative has either married someone who already had children by a previous marriage, or where the widowed spouse has gone on to remarry and have more children. What I do is to put brief details of the earlier/later family in the spouse's notes. So let's say John Smith married my cousin Jeannie Scott after already being married to Lizzie brown. I will put into John's notes something like, "John was married to Lizzie Brown on [date] at [place]. They had three children: [name, DoB; name, DoB: name, DoB]. Lizzie died on [date] at [place] of [cause of death]". Then suppose my cousin Jeannie Scott died and John Smith later married Maggie MacDonald, by whom he had two more children. I will add to his notes, "John was married to Maggie MacDonald on [date] at [place]. They had two children: [name, DoB; name, DoB: ]. Maggie died on [date] at [place] of [cause of death]". If any of John's children by his other wives became famous or achieved anything particular, I might add a note about that too, but always in John Smith's notes, not in an actual tree of relatives. Likewise if either Lizzie Brown or Maggie MacDonald had a notable parent or relative, I might add that to John Smith's notes as well. HTH Anne

    3. Hi Judith, I do not currently put my family-tree information on a software; it's on my genealogy-to-do-list. :o( (The FTM box is sitting on my desk.) But, my grandparents' story is more confusing. Silas and Clarissa eloped in 1916 and had 3 children. They divorced in 1935 and were both remarried within a few months. Clarissa, again, already pregnant with 2nd husband. She had 2 children with him; her 2nd daughter is the only one still living, and we consider her our aunt - actually she's less than 10 yrs. older than me. Then my grandfather didn't have more children. But, he had 5 step-children with that wife, and then she died young. He remarried and had 5 step-children with his 3rd wife. I have the names of all of them, and some of the first set of step-children knew some of the step-children from the 3rd wife. :o) Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) FYI: Because of all the queries I've posted on-line for 8 yrs., I've connected up with the children of the step-children from the 2nd wife. And, I almost connected up with a daughter of the 3rd wife, but she was in a hospital dying when she received my letter. :o( It's a reminder -- "find" a distant cousin - sooner rather than later ! (This extended family had no connection to Scotland, but my grandfather's parents were born in England, with ties to the Isle of Man (LEWIS / CORKILL).) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judith" <judith.bn@bigpond.com> To: <lanark@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 04, 2010 9:46 PM Subject: [Lanark] Recording children of 2nd marriage if they are notdescendants?

    1. [Lanark] Toll Keeper
    2. frank
    3. I have come across some information that has me a bit confused. I have an 1882 death registration from Scotland that refers to the informant as "George Easton' Son who resides at "Muirfoot Toll at Carmichael. The mother who passed away was residing at (Welton Walton or Wolton cannot quite make it out)) Toll at Douglas. I thought I knew what a Toll was, but are some another name for a residence or are they a residence for someone who operates a "Toll" and a Toll of what, roads or bridges? I expect this "son" may have been an executor of a will of an uncle as the 1872 will reads in part "Her Majesty's Justices of Peace for the County of Lanark, appeared George Easton, Toll Keeper residing at Avonbridge in the Parish of Hamilton, Executor of the deceased George Easton , lately residing at Harperfield. Now did these "Toll Keeper's" bounce around a little? It is an interesting situation as I may be able to make a link between the person who was deceased in 1882 as a sister in law of the person who died in 1872. Could someone please put me in the right direction on this little puzzle. I think I might be on the right path, however to figure out what a Toll keeper does (or did - are they around today) it would be nice to have a clear idea of what a Toll is. I have had to pay Tolls on roads at a "Toll Gate" on a "Toll Highway" but perhaps the residence part is what is throwing me off? Thanks Frank Easton Sherwood Park Alberta 0 c and 5" snow

Hi Lizanne You should be able to find full details of the first one on the Scotland's People (SP) web site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk at modest cost. However you will only be able to see the index entries of anyone born in 1910 or later (less than 100 years ago). To see these you either have to order a paper copy of the certificate to be sent to you, or get someone to go to Register House on your behalf if you can't go yourself. There are links on the SP web site to professional researchers who will do transcribing for you. HTH Anne
