Thank you Iain, That is perfect. I was really, really hoping it would be in or around Barony. I read 1803 - second battalion raised at Dumbarton - remained a home battalion and the 2nd Btn, 71st Regiment stationed at Glasgow was a "feeder" Btn to the remainder of the Regiment. and was stationed at Gallowgate . Gallowgate Infantry Barracks was situated on Gallowgate and Barrack Sts. In which parish is that. please, for the geographically challenged.? Thanks Gay

Glenys mentioned QUARTER and I was curious. Googled it, and there is quite a nice write-up about it. Enjoy. Jeannette
Jim, don't know if you received my email, but I was wondering where I could find the parish register for the estate of Quarter in Hamilton. I have relatives there that I cannot find. Thanking you. Glenys in West Aust.
Hello List Does anyone have information on Elizabeth Gillies born abt 1852 in Glasgow. Elizabeth was the child of Agnes Falconer and Alexander Gillies, Elizabeth married William Hamilton 05 Sep 1873 in Bridgeton, Glasgow Thank you In Advance Bob
Thanks Don, That is great news that there may be a chance to find the details of an Apprenticeship. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately for most of us, visiting the repositories is not possible for various reasons.. You said > if you don't have the specific year< Can you please explain what you mean by that . Can anyone please tell me how long it would have taken to complete an apprenticeship as a Carpenter in the first three decades of the 1800s. Thanks Don, That's helpful and I'll check. Had forgotten about the guilds and now remember when at the Mitchell many years ago finding the plumber I was interested in (step gr gr grandfather) was admitted to his Father in Law's Guild. Will have to search my mountain of paper! Just wish I could find plumbers in Aberdeen! Some registers simply list the name, date and who they apprenticed under, some of the 18th century records that I have seen include sponsors and their Parish which in most instances is the father so it helps identify family. It really depends on the trade. I know the NAS is working on indexing the print trade, there was talk a few years ago about indexing other trades but I'm unsure if that's still the plan. Cheers!!! Jean, Try having a look at the National Archives of Scotland web site. You might just be lucky! By searching for the surname of the person I was researching, I found that they had the original copy of his blacksmith's apprenticeship document from the early 1820s. >I am looking for much earlier ones, mid 1800s. I figured that you were but you could search the Archives and see what they have. I was only giving you an example of what could be found using Aitchison Blair Clydebank. Put the company name he worked for in the search box of the Archives and see what comes up.
