    3. Hi Rhoda Thank you for your thoughts on this. I'll have a look at the deaths for that period and see what I can come up with. As far as Henry Campbell is concerned, I know very little about him. I don't know where or when he was born, nor do I know where or when he died. He may have died in the West Indies. I am doing some research into Jamaica as my ggrandmother was born there. That's proving to be just as successful as this is. Never mind, will keep plodding on. I'm pretty certain that on the 1851 Census it shows that Helen is a widow and she is also the head. I couldn't find her on the 1841 Census so perhaps the family were still in Jamaica. I appreciate your help. 3. Hi Annie, I checked Ancestry which does not have original images. Their best guess was the same as yours for Peter, Salesman in Dorfroy. For Janet's occupation they have `engaged at home Apne Work'. I have to say that Ancestry consistently has trouble in reading the census writing so it may or may not be correct. Particularly since they list Alexander as `Engine Fittie at works' when it has to be obvious that he is an Engine Fitter! Daniel is a Clerk and Sophia Crichton is a boarder [Saleswoman in a Drapery]. I know you can get list's of Monumental Inscriptions, but not everyone had a gravestone, they must have been recorded somewhere, don't you think? 3. Hi Rhoda When I initially started searching for Mary, it was under the name of Campbell because she gave her parents as Henry Campbell and Helen Carbarns on her marriage certificate. I can only imagine that she looked upon Helen as her mother. When her children were born I found they were registered under the name of Hill and Gilbert. I searched back to the 1851 Census and found Helen Campbell, and Mary Gilbert was with her as a 2yo "child nursing". Could that be another term for foster child? The same for the 1861 Census, she was Mary Gilbert, a 12yo pauper. She did emigrate under the name of Gilbert. 3. Hi Laurette I don't think I can be of much help. But these are my thoughts: I think you are right in thinking that the infant Mary was taken in by Helen Campbell. Perhaps Mary's mother (and father died). There was a cholera epidemic/outbreak in Glasgow in the late 1840s (A couple of days ago, I was looking at a list of 1848 deaths in Glasgow on Scotlands People and many of the deaths on the page were from cholera). Another option is that Mary was her (illegitimate) granddaughter. If Helen did take in this child, you might expect there to have been some relationship - not necessarily a family one - with the child's mother. Mary's birth may not have been recorded in the parish register especially if she was illegitimate. I see that Helen's daughter Sarah was born in Jamaica abt 1838 although the other 2 (older) children were born in Scotland. So Henry was presumably a missionary in the West Indies. Was Helen a widow in 1851? If so, it is interesting that Mary thought of Henry as her father. Rhoda

    3. Frank and Annie Frank, I wonder if Annie is looking at the Ancestry transcription of the 1871 Scotland Census, which includes the extracts she mentioned. Their 1871 Scottish census transcription is a really poor effort. Some of it strikes me as someone having a joke. I have recently suggested various amendments to entries which bore absolutely no resemblance to the fairly clear originals. Annie, if you haven't already done so, you will need to look at the original image on the Scotland's People website, which will cost 6 credits to find and download. 3. Yes, there is a register for each cemetery and yes many still survive. You can access them through local council. Some charge a few some don't it depends on how much detail you have. Cheers!!! As of 2004, I know that the headstone for the above couple, now lies between Lairs F7 & F8 within Riccarton Cemetery whose inscription reads: ERECTED BY JAMES ARNOTT IN LOVING MEMORY OF HIS WIFE MARY TURNER DIED 15TH DEC 1896 84 YRS THE ABOVE JAMES ARNOTT DIED 31ST JULY 1898 83 YRS According to the Elaine Weir, Burial Administration, East Ayrshire the stone itself "has been sheughed into the ground". I look forward to your responses Jim Arnott, Canada
