Hi Jim As always I opened your latest transcript in hope that I may find one of my ancestors. Little did I expect that your note would take my breath away! Your opening personal reference left me stunned :-) James Thomson - Agnes Robison are my 4th great grandparents too. I descend from the line of Thomas Thomson (b.1806) (Ps. Your transcript lists Thomas as a daughter?) Looking forward to further discussion offline. British N/A, ADM 188/1057, Seamen's Registers, 1916. (Date of discharge from British Navy?) Samuel William English born Govan, Lanarkshire 31st May 1891. Married 4th August 1914 St. Colman's RC, Queenstown Co. Cork, Samuel William English & Harriett Mary Ahern, both full age. Samuel was a Marine Engineer, both lived in Queenstown. His father was Malcolm English, Master Mariner, mother possibly Mary Gorman. Harriett's father William Ahern, Chief Warrent Officer RN. Witt. John English & Harriett Mary English. I'm trying to find out if the above entry from the British N/A is the same person who married Harriett Mary Ahern. His birth is not listed in the online indexes for the civil registration of births in Ireland, he did have other siblings born in Co. Cork. Other details from Ellisisland: S.S. Lusitania, arrived NY Nov. 20 1908, departed Q/Town 15th Nov. 1908. Line #0009, Kate English, age 44, married, housekeeper, non immigrant alien, nearest relative in Ireland Mrs. Mary GORMAN, Q/Town Co. Cork. Paid her own passage, money in possession $50.00, was in US for 6 weeks in 1906. Going to her husband Captain Malcolm English, address S.S. "Mombassa" in Philadelphia. Kate had brown hair and brown eyes and was 5'6" in height. An online search gave details for three ships of that name, this one is probably the correct one. MOMBASSA .O.N. 1212269, 4,327 gross tons, built 1905 by D & W. Henderson Glasgow for McLay & McIntyre Glasgow. 1929 sold to Greece, renamed PANORMITIS. 1933 scrapped at Blyth. Any help most appreciated. Colman Ahern, Berkeley, Calif.

Thanks Jenny, This lot were to be digitised and online in July 2010. The website says they are now online, but perhaps these are pieces which have some disruptions... Perhaps it is still too early..to expect all the bugs to be ironed out.. Thanks for your help Gay.

There is a guide to Wills and Testaments and how to access them on their web site http://www.nas.gov.uk/guides/wills.asp Basically, for the wills you are interested in, you need to go in person, or get someone to go on your behalf, to the National Archives in General Register House, Edinburgh. Hi Frank Wondered if you have seen this booklet which is available from National Archives, Amazon, etc at around 3 pounds. Local Census Listings 1522-1930 Holdings In The British Isles by Jeremy Gibson & Mervyn Medlycott Third Edition This is the info National Archives says about it. "There are an unexpected quantity of 'quasi-censuses' pre-dating the decennial national census, whose records survive in unexpected quantity. They include locally retained census enumeration lists made for 1801-1831 which included names of individuals, and many others in earlier centuries. For the first time these are comprehensively listed for the whole of England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands." I haven't seen it myself so don't know how good it is. The can be purchased (very reasonable) from the Lanarkshire Family History Society. My question is this however. The Church of Scotland directed their clergy to take these census'. Evidently some did some did not. Some were destroyed and some were not. Some are in private collections some are not. SOME ARE PUBLIC, SOME ARE NOT! It would be very helpful for the study of Scottish genealogy if we had a list of the 1821 and 1783 census records that are actually available. I do apologize that this question goes beyond the borders of Lanarkshire however does such a list exist and if so where. Thank you Frank Easton Sherwood Park, +24c
Hello Elizabeth, My husband's McDonalds sailed from the Isle of Skye on the "Midlothian" in 1837, the Buchannans sailed on the "Duncan" in 1838. It appears at the time of immigrating they were all living and working on the Isle of Skye, so they may have come from other parts of Scotland before then. These immigrants to Australia were known as Bounty Immigrants. Between 1828 and 1842 many Scots from all over Scotland, took up the offer to immigrate Down Under, with the help of one Rev. John Dunmore Lang. You will find his story on this website:- http://www.mmcs-ngo.org/?p=61 If you scroll down through his story to the "Midlothian" you can read about the Scottish immigrants. Rev. Lang was afraid that with so many Irish convicts and free settlers sailing to the Penal Colony looking for a better life, that Catholicism would take over the new land, so he encourage Scottish Protestants to find a better life in the Colony. However, for awhile things did not go that well for them when they arrived, however that is another story. I have the Bounty Immigrant CD and if anyone would like me to look up to see if a missing Scottish family, may have taken up Rev. John Dunmore Lang's offer for a better life, I can check on the CD for you. Hi Judith, Why don't you send me more detail of what you would like checked and I'll put it straight into my folder for next week. If the two women are related (I'm assuming you're looking for marriage certificates) would you like me to get photocopies of the actual certificates? They aren't considered to be legal documents but are useful for all of the information they contain. I can post them to you or try scanning and emailing them. As you've given me the reference numbers for each certificate it won't take long to locate them so are you looking for anything else? I have several brick walls in my searches so it's nice to take a break from them and look for something else! Hi Stuart, Thank you very much, that would be wonderful. As it stands yours is the one and only offer, so if it's okay I will jog your memory a bit closer to time. Hi Maree, There isn't lot in the early OPRs I found with any of mine....but let me have a look at the birth for Agnes, which is almost as common as John, and I'll see if it could ring a bell... Thanks and Cheers Gay
