> Is it true that Barony is now called Glasgow? Not exactly. Trying to simplify things, Barony and Glasgow are originally adjacent parishes, but the city has outgrown its original parish boundary and swallowed up some or all of its neighbours. So while it isn't strictly true that 'Barony is now called Glasgow', all the places in Barony are now effectively in Glasgow. Anne
Hello Lanark List & Greetings from Canada: I was very fortunate to find out about my Great X's 2 Grandfather Angus Anderson just last year. After thinking my Dad was the last of his Anderson line, I found many relatives to add to the family tree through the help of people such as yourself, people in Nova Scotia & Ancestry.ca This new branch of the Anderson tree is from Nova Scotia, Canada. One of my 'new' cousins is now at university in Edinburgh and her Mom (Teri Anderson) & Dad will be travelling from Nova Scotia to visit her next spring. Teri has asked me if I could possibly find out about any Anderson relatives still living now in Scotland and I told her I would ask the Lanark list for their help - Teri would like to hopefully meet any living relatives or do some 'graveyard' touring next spring when she visits her daughter in Edinburgh. Here is the info I have so far - my Great X's 2 Grandfather Angus Anderson was born May 8th, 1817 & his Christening date is May 18th, his wife was Ann MacDonald born 1825 & died 1876 in Nova Scotia - not 100% sure if Ann was born in Scotland because on two of the Canadian census one lists her as born in Scotland and the other says she was born in Nova Scotia. Angus came to Nova Scotia we believe in 1853 according to info handed down over the years although we cannot find any passenger list for them, so we don't know if he came on his own, or with Ann or with siblings. Angus' parents were Martin Anderson (born 1785) & Sarah McDonald (born 1789) and Angus was born in Barony, Lanarkshire, Scotland, May 8th, 1817. Angus' siblings were: Mary (1811), John (1813), Hector (1815) and Alexander (1818) and we do not know if any of these siblings accompanied them on their voyage to Canada - so I was hoping maybe someone can dig up some info on these siblings, hopefully their descendants are still living in Scotland or also hoping to find where they are buried. Is it true that Barony is now called Glasgow? Many thanks to all for any and all help, Gail Anderson Leonardo [email protected]

Many thanks to Nivard and to Bob, these sites are just what I wanted. Having a ball finding all sorts of things. Luckily the BDM are page 1 for the majority of the years, and yes I have found some entries I wanted, but some not there, that is ok, at least I have been able to search and find for myself. Can anyone advise if the Glasgow Herald newspaper is available to search online after the 1900 time period. I do have access to this newspaper up to this time frame, but it is later after then this that I need access. I have no issue with subscribing to a site to pay for my searches if they are available. As I live in Australia, I am unable to access the NL index to see if a death notice does appear for the people I am looking for. I have a feeling there should be a death notice at least for my G Grandparents, as memorial cards edged in black were sent to family in NZ advising of the deaths. These are not in my possession, I only know about them and would like to be able to view/obtain a number of death notices. Do I need to obtain the services of a researcher to look this up for me. Would love to be able to do it myself. thanks in advance Ailsa Corlett [email protected] http://www.st.net.au/~ailsa
Can anyone advise if there are any indexes available to search online (live in Australia) regarding the Bothwell Park Cemetery. It appears that I may have a number of ancestors buried in this cemetery. I know for certain my G Grandparents are. I have not yet sent an email to the North Lanarkshire Council to get the Lair number, but intend to do this. But I also have a feeling I have quite a few others in this cemetery as well, so not sure if they respond to a number of requests or just one? If I can obtain the plot reference details, does anyone know of anyone who can take a photograph if they have a headstone, or can the council also arrange this when I contact them. This cemetery has not yet been photographed by the people doing the Scottish Monumental CD's. I do have a number of their CD's which are great but they have not done this cemetery as yet. Thanks Ailsa Corlett [email protected] http://www.st.net.au/~ailsa
Hi Ailsa The BL newspapers on findmypast get 16,000 plus hits post 1900 but I am unsure if they are references to it found in other papers, as the list of papers shows the Glasgow Herald to 1900, however they have just added more but the findmypast.co.uk newspaper search has been out of action for a few days There is a run on googlebooks See <http://scottishancestry.blogspot.co.uk/2010/10/glasgow-herald-1806-1990-online-at.html> And <http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC&dat=19140810&b_mode=2> Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 02/09/2013 10:27, Ailsa Corlett wrote: > Can anyone advise if the Glasgow Herald newspaper is available to search > online after the 1900 time period. John Hall married Irvine Cock (her second marriage) 13 Jan 1793 in Crawfordjohn Lanarkshire. He appears to have been involved in the mining industry with his family living in Muirkirk, Dalserf, Douglas, Coalburn. Their children I know of were: John born 10 April 1792 Margaret born 19 January 1794 Jean born 20 March 1796, married William Jack Wm. Born 25 February 1798. Possibly died at a young age William born 13 July 1800, died 8 May 1888 married Jean Hamilton 20 October 1826 who was born 21 February1803, died 12 December 1879 Mary Hall born 14 September 1802, married Arch Nisbet I am interested in finding out what sort of mining John was involved with and when John died. Irvine died in Douglas 27 August 1846 Terry Logan

In reply to my question of where the marriage was found, Bob gave "I found the marriage on Family Search online the IGI # is M116516 . On the 1891 census for Polmont, Stirlingshire he gives place of birth as New Monkland. in 1891 Alexander gives his age as 34." I can only find the family in 1891 as Bob already has 1891 Scotland Census about Alexander Reid Name: Alexander Reid Age: 34 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1857 Relationship: Head Spouse's name : Elizabeth Reid Gender: Male Where born: New Monkland, Lanarkshire Registration number: 487 Registration District: Polmont Civil Parish: Polmont County: Stirlingshire Address: Summerhouse Occupation: Coal Miner ED: 6 Household Schedule Number: 139 Line: 8 Roll: CSSCT1891_153 Household Members: Name Age Alexander Reid 34 Elizabeth Reid 34 Glasgow, Lanarkshire Elizabeth Reid 9 Glasgow, Lanarkshire Alexander Reid 6 Glasgow, Lanarkshire Martha A Reid 4 Glasgow, Lanarkshire Annie M Reid 3 Falkirk, Stirlingshire Christina Reid 1 Shotts, Lanarkshire Source Citation: Parish: Polmont; ED: 6; Page: 31; Line: 8; Roll: CSSCT1891_153. The nearest I found for an 1871 entry is 1871 Scotland Census about Alex Reid Name: Alex Reid Age: 13 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1858 Gender: Male Where born: Co Lanark, Glasgow Registration number: 622/2 Registration District: Springburn Civil Parish: Springburn County: Lanarkshire Address: Massbank, Springburn Occupation: Scholar ED: Mossbank Industrial School Household Schedule Number: 1 Line: 13 Roll: CSSCT1871_117 Household Members: Name Age <snip> Alex Reid 13 <snip> Source Citation: Parish: Springburn; ED: Mossbank Industrial School; Page: 8; Line: 13; Roll: CSSCT1871_117. But not in 1881 or 1861, or rather not with anyone to confirm its the right person Bob do you have the marriage for Alexander and is that where you have his parents from? Otherwise how do you know you have the right person? Do you have Alexanders birth ? Hi Bob Where are you finding the 1845 marriage details? It can't be a quarter, you may be confusing it with the English/Welsh system Do you know where Alexander was born? Not sure why I have this document but it is the 3rd Sabbath in New Monkland it is from the Parish Accounts. I'm guessing Bob is asking if there are any more children besides Alexander. Hello List I have found a marriage that I have been seeking for a few years. James Reid married Janet Hamilton in Sep 1845, I think that means September 1/4 1845. My question does SKS have access to the 1851 and 1861 census . The couple had a son Alexander born 1857, who married an Elizabeth McIntyre ,they married on 29 Dec 1882. Alexander and Elizabeth moved to Polmont, Stirlingshire . Thank you in Advance Bob
Hello Rhoda, I havent had an answer to my last post so am reposting. Can you tell me what was the significance of the questions you asked last post? Can anyone on the list give me any information of where I might turn to find where the name of my mothers father might possibly be recorded? Hi Carole I think you will need 64 bit Win 7 but it should run FTM 2005 with one exception, it will not create PDFs But you can get around that by downloading one of many free PDF printers I would recommend subscribing to one or more of the following rootsweb lists and ask again there to confirm the above is correct The subscribers are well versed in what can and cannot be done with versions of FTM and Win 7 FTM-HELP A mailing list for the discussion and sharing of information regarding the Family Tree Maker genealogy software program. I suddenly find myself needing to replace my 10 year old Dell PC, which has Windows XP. After hearing horror stories about Windows 8, my local computer guru recommends I get a new Dell PC with Windows 7. Is that compatible with Family Tree Maker version 2005? I will happily upgrade to a newer FTM version if I must, but don't want to have problems and not be able to use/access all my files from FTM! Leonard, The only other possible source would be court records if the mother had brought a suit for maintenance of the child. Other than that, in that time period, there is almost no chance of being able to find the father's name. The kirk was no longer running society, so it's unlikely that any kirk session records would mention it. I have a similar situation where I do know the father's name, but it still was useless as there was no way to pinpoint him. In a city, without any parental or age info, it is impossible to find the correct person.
