    3. Thanks to Marg and Irene for replies. The year on scotlandspeople is not a problem but the actual date. Eg. on the NZBDM web site, I can select the year then via adjusting the months and then the days narrow it down to the exact date the event occured. They allow searches via date/ month/ year which scotlandspeople does not unfortunately. Irene, a wishful thought I think. we are lucky that the Glasgow Herald is actually online and I can search via year and date when I have the actually date, it is knowing the year but not the actual date that is my issue and frustration. there must be a way in which to search the newspaper for names only in the year selected, but this is what I do not know how to do. Many thanks for your replies anyway Ailsa Ailsa Corlett [email protected] www.st.net.au/~ailsa alternative email if having trouble sending to my normal email is: [email protected] >-----Original Message----- >From: marg o'leary [mailto:[email protected]] >Sent: Monday, 30 December 2013 5:51 PM >To: Ailsa Corlett; [email protected] >Subject: Re: [Lanark] Anyone know how to search without a particular >date on thegoogle newspapers > > >with scotlands people > >I play with the date and give it say 20 year possible and then drop a >year off each end until I home in a particular year, also play with the >place in the same way. >if you pin it down to 25 results, you will get them all on one page, so >only one credit if you are paying. > > > > >regards > >Marg OLeary >Port Stephens >NSW > >[email protected] >also [email protected] >-----Original Message----- >From: Ailsa Corlett >Sent: Monday, December 30, 2013 6:28 PM >To: [email protected] >Subject: [Lanark] Anyone know how to search without a particular date on >thegoogle newspapers > >Hi, I have been having quite a bit of success on using the Glasgow >Herald newspaper via google newspapers, regarding Births, Deaths and >Marriages > > > >But get stuck when I do not have a specific date and only a year to >search. > >I have quite a number of people who I only have the year of death from >using Scotlandspeople site. 3. It's a lot quicker if on the second try you choose the first 10 years, then you've reduced the possibilities by one half. Then just continue by halving the correct year ranges. 3. I am trying to find out who Catherine Henderson RUSSELL married to no avail. Father Thomas RUSSELL was born in Falkirk, Stirlingshire, while the mother Marion CARRICK was born in New Monkland, Lanarkshire. Half the children were born in Lanarkshire and half were born in Stirlingshire. The family moved back to Glasgow area pre 1851 census where most of the the children married pre civil registration. As far as I am able to find Catherine RUSSELL was still single in 1861 in Helensburgh, Dunbartonshire. Catherine's older sister Agnes Adam RUSSELL, my great great grandmother, immigrated to Australia in 1852. Any help would be grateful. Shirlee Wellington, NZ

    3. Hi Ailsa I fear your frustration is likely to continue, for now at least Its not that you don't know how to search for names or words, it just isn't a facility available at present The only way to achieve what you wish for is if all the newspapers are OCR scanned and therefore word searchable At present they are scanned but not OCRd The Glasgow Herald for 1800 to 1949 (although nothing like all issues) are OCRd and available on the British Library Newspaper Archive or findmypast or Genesreunited All have separate subscriptions NB as newsprint varies considerably in type and condition of the paper, a lot of OCRing throws up entirely spurious results Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 30/12/2013 12:51, Ailsa Corlett wrote: > Thanks to Marg and Irene for replies. > > The year on scotlandspeople is not a problem but the actual date. 3. It would be great if the Herald had some kind of index for BDM notices. A good project for a 'crowd' Or would it be too big to store on a normal .doc file? If it was just first name, surname, date and page number....no need to 'sort it' into alphabetical order ...'find' would work. something to think about Irene On 30 December 2013 07:28, Ailsa Corlett <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi, I have been having quite a bit of success on using the Glasgow Herald > newspaper via google newspapers, regarding Births, Deaths and Marriages > > > > But get stuck when I do not have a specific date and only a year to search. > > I have quite a number of people who I only have the year of death from > using > Scotlandspeople site. 3. Quite so Anne Hence my post to flag it up The wills & testaments indexes on scotlandspeople only goes up to 1925 so its well worth checking the Probate calendars for England and Wales (1858 to 1966) as many Scots died having assets in Eng/Wales For example a quick search for keywords finds Lanark* = 9,442 hits Scotland = 209,973 hits In most cases they refer to a person who died in Scotland most born in Scotland Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 29/12/2013 02:23, Anne Burgess wrote: > Given that it mentions 'confirmation' rather than 'probate', and that it > says it was 'sealed' in London, this must be a will that was dealt with > under Scots Law and only 'sealed' in England in respect of some property > she owned in England. 3. Given that it mentions 'confirmation' rather than 'probate', and that it says it was 'sealed' in London, this must be a will that was dealt with under Scots Law and only 'sealed' in England in respect of some property she owned in England. It is possible to get the full details from the National Archives of Scotland, though it means ordering a copy direct as wills in 1958 are not on Scotland's People. 3. Heather, You will need to spend the £7 for the 30 credits with Scot's People then order a copy of the death registration for Morris for £12 which should provide you with next of kin. Or you can spend £6.95 and get 2day access with British Newspaper Archive and hope that Sarah's obit says something about the family other than she died. Morris won't be there, the archive only goes too 1949. If you opt for Scot's People you can download a copy of Sarah's death registration in 1941 and their marriage in 1915 using some of the 30 credits you would have. My great uncle Adam Morris Chalmers died in Edinburgh 9 August 1969, his wife Sarah Low Noble died in Edinburgh 13 May 1941, that was the date the death was registered. I was in Scotland and went to the Library in hopes of looking for their death notices. I signed up, then finally spoke to someone who told me it would take 24 hours to order the films for that date, unfortunately I had to get back on the bus. I would love to know if they had any children, have tried Scotsland people and think there was a son named Robert but unable to confirm the fact. Merry Christmas to all Heather Umelas ------------------------------- WHEN REPLYING to a post please remember to snip most of the earlier message.
