    3. Hello everyone, I came across a really neat genealogical helper at a local book store and thought you might be interested in it. It is Ancestry's " Concise Genealogical Dictionary". It has 246 pages of terms and definitions commonly used in old manuscripts, legal documents and other tidbits regarding the language of genealogy. Example: democrat:(no, not the opposite of a republican): (Also, democratic wagon) a light four-wheeled cart with several seats one behind the other pulled by two horses. The words included in this guide may be found in apprentice, church, census, tax, land, naturalization, immigration, and medical records, as well as in deeds, probates, civil registrations, and poll books. The terms are concise in a specialized dictionary in that is it not meant to give all meaning of any particular term but only those which are unusual or dated and are most pertinent. For example, the definition of the word "perch" describes a unit of land measurement and does not include everyday meanings, such as "a roost for a bird". I don't have an interest in the selling of this book, it's just a great little book that comes in handy when trying to transcribe old legal documents and other records. It is especially handy when going to the library for research, it's size is perfect for a carry-a-long.
