    3. Hi Jo, No, it is hard to believe but "Autrey" is one family my Mitchells & Browns missed marrying into---probably because they were so busy intermarrying among themselves! Quite a few Autreys listed in Lincoln Parish Marriage Index, 1873-1901. I have to look them up a page at a time, so let me know if you want any of these looked up. Female Autreys: Annie, Arnie, Bettie, C.D., Fannie, J.P, Jane, Laura, M.F., M.J., Martha, S.E., S.V., & Sealy E. Male Autreys: A.W., B.G., C.F., C. H., J.R., R.A., T.J. , and T.M. Also, a (male) G.B. 2. jmautrey
    3. Peggy and Listmembers: This has been a very special treat for me, the diary brought back a lot of childhood memories of my grandfather and father and the farms we lived on. At one point, my age showed! Mr. Jones listed B.D. and a price. For some reason I instantly thought of Black Draught. A few lines later, that was exactly what he wrote! I remember my grandparents buying it, but I have forgotten if it was medicine or a rubbing compound for animals as well as man. If you have materials such as this diary, please consider donating a copy to Peggy for the archives. I'll continue to offer my time, as permitted, to type materials for you so we can have all the information we can on Lincoln Parish and all the communities in it. Perhaps there are others that can donate a little of their time to help type, you don't have to be a speed typist, just so we get the materials typed in a format that Peggy can use to upload to the web site. I also thank Mr. Jones for sharing this treasure with us, and to Peggy for all the hard work she does, and to the subscribers of this list for all you submit. You know, we are just a great group of people, all dependent on each other! So, out to the garage, storage room, attics, book shelves and trunks for those wonderful documents! If it can be read, it can be typed! 1. [LALINCOL-L] Ancestry's Concise Genealogical Dictionary
    2. jmautrey
    3. Hello everyone, I came across a really neat genealogical helper at a local book store and thought you might be interested in it. It is Ancestry's " Concise Genealogical Dictionary". It has 246 pages of terms and definitions commonly used in old manuscripts, legal documents and other tidbits regarding the language of genealogy. Example: democrat:(no, not the opposite of a republican): (Also, democratic wagon) a light four-wheeled cart with several seats one behind the other pulled by two horses. The words included in this guide may be found in apprentice, church, census, tax, land, naturalization, immigration, and medical records, as well as in deeds, probates, civil registrations, and poll books. The terms are concise in a specialized dictionary in that is it not meant to give all meaning of any particular term but only those which are unusual or dated and are most pertinent. For example, the definition of the word "perch" describes a unit of land measurement and does not include everyday meanings, such as "a roost for a bird". I don't have an interest in the selling of this book, it's just a great little book that comes in handy when trying to transcribe old legal documents and other records. It is especially handy when going to the library for research, it's size is perfect for a carry-a-long.

Drewett Estate donated the log dog trot house built by Absalom Autrey in 1849, and 1.6 acres including the family cemetery, to the Lincoln Parish Museum, with the stipulation that the place be preserved as a monument to the pioneer heritage of north Louisiana. The Absalom Autrey house is an example of the log dog trot, the most common traditional house type of the early north Louisiana hill country. Believed to be the oldest surviving structure in Lincoln Parish, the hand-hewn log house has an open central hall, with two rooms on each side and a sleeping loft above. Absalom Autrey, a typical pioneer of the area, was drawn by the abundance of cheap land for growing cotton. With his wife, Elizabeth Norris, and their fourteen children, he moved to present day Lincoln Parish from the Selma, Alabama area in 1848. on the 160 acers plot of land he purchased on Bird Creek, they grew cotton and corn for cash and raised vegetables and livestock and hunted game for food. The house was occupied by his descendants through the first quarter of this century and later was rented until the early 1970's. MUSEUM STATUS: Now the Autrey House is a satellite museum of the Lincoln Parish Museum, showcasing our north Louisiana heritage. In 1991, restoration of the house was carried out under the auspices of a grant from the Division of Historic Preservation, Office of Cultural Development, Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism and the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. The house received the special grant for selected properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its historical and architectural significance. Today it is open third Saturdays and Sundays, March-October, 2-4 p.m. and by special appointment. To schedule appointments or tours, call Liz Trammell, 318-777-3495. AUTREY HOUSE SUPPORT: The Autrey House needs your continued support to operate and maintain the house, grounds, and security system. You can give your support through a tax-deductible donation or by ordering an Autrey House 100% cotton T-shirt ($15.00). In addition, brass ornaments, featuring the pen and ink drawing by Kathy Roach Linder and Autrey House prints by James White are still available ($10.00 each). You may reserve your T-shirt for the reunion: large, ex-large, or childrens sizes will be available with other sizes printed by request. If you can't make the reunion, these items can be shipped to you. Thanks for your help.
