    3. Hi Sally, The Jackson Parish courthouse burned in the late 1870s so all records were lost prior to about 1880. Lincoln Parish didn't form until 1872 from parts of Claiborne, Jackson, and Ouachita. If you are researching the Vienna area, I'm pretty sure that was in Claiborne or Jackson around the 1840-50s. Maybe you should check in Claiborne?...however, it burned in 1848/49. Also, there was a newspaper called the Vienna Sentinel. I'm not sure exactly of the dates but I know it was in existance in 1876. LA Tech library has some of the issues on microfilm and I think that LSU has all of it. You might be able to find something in there. Hope that helps a little :o) Kelly Priestly

    3. Hi, I am just back from vacation at my dau's outside Alexandria in Grant parish. We made a trip to Monroe and Jonesboro to do a little research. Ruston was planned for the next day. Although I found some courthouse records 1893 ($76 worth, good thing I am single or I would soon be, spending that much) I was disappointed to find no earlier records, non earlier than 1873 in either courthouse. The family I am researching lived in Vienna and Vernon 1843 to during the Civil War. It is said Jarvis Milen Embry bn 1826, lived in Vienna, starting his own tanning business. He made shoes for the Confederate Army with his brother Reuben. Jarvis (known as Milen) married late, age 53, to Fannie P. Cook bn 1853 from Winn Parish, the dau of Joshua P. Cook M.D. After his marriage ca 1879 he lived in Jonesboro, owning a large farm. Jarvis & his brother Rube are buried in Springhill Cemetery, outside of Chatham. They died 1892 & 1893. My question is: are there any records for this time period, burial, church, anything 1843-1873. I can't find a burial for anyone else. Jarvis had a son Green T. Embry bn 1880, not listed as an heir in a suit filed by mother. Last record of him in fathers's succ 1893 age 12. Where is he buried?? Jarvis brought his mother to La., where is she buried. No other Embry burials found. I even checked the Lincoln website on usgenweb, and all the cemeteries listed. Some couthouse records had the name spelled Emery, Embrey. Could Jarvis have been married before he married Fannie and any children?? Jarvis had a sister md to a Perry, and a sister Laura? md to a Watson & a sister Nancy Embry md to John Collier. Can anyone tell me where else to look. Thanks, Sally in New Orleans

    2. Hi! I'm looking for any information on the Rhesa Smith household or any Christy's found in Lincoln Parish. John Christy and Harriett Bartlett Christy were in Claiborne Parish before John died in the Civil War. Harriett Christy then married Rhesa Smith in 1866. They were in the 1870 Union Parish census but not in the 1880. With the boundary changes during the 1870's I'm thinking they may have ended up in Lincoln Parish. I'm also missing a T.P. Christy in 1880! My Christy's aren't showing up on the census index in 1880 and I haven't had the chance to go back and look for the Smith's. Are any of these names familiar? Thanks much! Debi

    3. Hey, there, Steven, It's my Autrey book, Absalom and Elizabeth Autrey and Their Descendants with a Section on Thomas Norris". It could have just as easily called "The Early Settlers of Lincoln Parish, La.".:) Good to see you here as well, it's a fascinating county! How are you connected to Lincoln Parish? The Autrey's seem to be related to most of the county, as well as the surrounding areas. They flowed over into Texas and finally had enough room for all those kids. Is there such as book as the early settlers for this area? I would be very interested in it if there is. ----- Original Message ----- From: Steven Autry <Ridg-Runnr@webtv.net> To: <LALINCOL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 29, 1999 11:32 PM Subject: Re: [LALINCOL-L] Autrey/Huffman Connections > Jo, what book is this? > > > ==== LALINCOL Mailing List ==== > Check out the Lincoln Parish Archives at: > http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/lincoln.htm >

    2. Does anyone remember Elliott Rabb Whitman? He wrote under the name of Coleman Crosby. He published articles on Early Settlers of Lincoln Parish. I remember he published my information on the Bagwell's. In the middle, he stopped and published the Richardson genealogy to collect more data for the Bagwell articles. He also wrote on the Huey's and Pardues. He collected and exchanged information on just about everyone. His daughter inherited his library and had them shipped to her home in Roma Italy after the death of her Mother. Her brother owns the Morning Paper in Ruston. Mr. Whitman, Arelia Breed, Mrs. H. L. Odom, Mr. Wm. Wilhite, Esther Leonard and I all worked together. Later during the centenial, I think the Ruston Daily Leader published articles on the first Lincoln Parish families. One of these families was the Feazel family who lived on the edge of Union and Lincoln Parish, La. Esther worked on the Greer and Kirkland lines. I think someone worked on the Atkins line. Mrs. H. L. Odom worked on the Slaughter, Grub, Dark and Feazel lines. Mr. Wilhite worked on the Feazel-Honeycutt- Wood and Farmer lines. When I was sick I bundled up my notebooks and mailed them to the Lincoln Parish Library for preservation. They were never in book form so this was my original copies, etc. You have to ask to see these books. They are kept on a cart in the back room. The families that were not related to me are in alph. order in some very large black notebooks. You might be surprised at what you will find. If any of you live near the Lincoln Parish Library, and want to view these files ask them "to show you the Gritzbaugh books which are in the back room on a cart." I asked that they not be released until many of the people were deceased. They were never edited and some of the comments on the family group sheets probably should have been removed. If my memory serves me correctly, Mr. Whitman was related to the Coleman, Crosby, Colvin, Rabb and Whitman families. Sorry I got carried away and realize that this is much to long, but will send it anyway. Thanks for letting me share in your web site. Sherry G. P. S. Also if any of you descend from old John Ferguson who left many Austin, Feazel, Wise, and other descendants in the area, Roy Austin is doing a book. He would like to hear from any one interested. 3. Please forgive the dark print, it is easier for me to read. Cousins, Please forgive the long delay, I lost about 30 messages. I kept seeing I had this many unread and I finally found them. There are 29 Huffman's listed in my Autrey book. The Huffman family of Lincoln Parish area was a very big part of the Autrey family, but only a small portion has been included in this book. Since I'm attempting to find all descendants of this large Autrey family to get them involved in my Autrey site, I would love to hear from anyone interested in having their family included in this site that concentrates on Absalom and Elizabeth Autrey. This includes the Huffman family branches. This is how the information starts and the surnames listed in the book. Chapter XVII CHARLEY HENRY AND MARY JANE "DOLLY" MONCRIEF AUTREY Page 139: LAURA ALICE AUTREY, second child of Charles Henry and Mary Jane "Dolly" (Moncrief) Autrey, was born 15 Feb. 1876 in the Autrey Home, Dubach, La. She married THOMAS RUSSELL HUFFMAN, son of SAMUEL DAVID AND HARRIET REGINA (COLVIN) HUFFMAN, 3 JANUARY 1897 IN Lincoln Parish, La. She died 14 Octobert 1958 in Dubach, La. and was buried in Henry Cemetery, Hico, La. He died 21 Mar 1967 in Dubach, La. and was buried in Fellowship Cemetery near Dubach, La. They had eight children born in Lincoln Parish, La. This information is continued through page 143. The children of the above couple are: Charlie Fair Huffman, had 4 children Mary Huffman, had no children Allie Huffman, 4 children Willie Virsey Huffman, no children David Parks Huffman, died at age 3 from burn injuries Audie Huffman, had 2 children Thomas Russell Huffman, Jr., 6 children S.D. Huffman, 3 children Unfortunately, I have no information on Ruth Bagwell, but would love to have any information from her family. I hope this has helped someone looking for their families. I would like to have any information on the lines connected to this family and any updated materials you would like to share with me. Private information is omitted before loading to site. Sincerely, Jo Autrey I look forward to hearing from anyone connected to my Autrey's, don't want to miss anyone.:) I only have 5 pictures in the book, however, if family members will submit pictures of the older family members, we can start an on-site picture album. If you have good black and white copies of pictues you would like to contribute to the site, please make a good quality copy of it and send it to me. It may take a while to upload everything, but I can promise they will get there and be included with credit given to the contributor. The same goes for family bible records, obituaries, land records, deeds, wills, old letters, military records, Confederate Applications (I will type and up load them), Union papers, anything that helps us collect as much as possible about our families and preserve their history. Please do not send me ORIGINAL copies, only photocopies. If you have extra copies of pictures, then by all means send an original, otherwise, just send a good photocopy. If you have any questions, please contact me. I will answer all messages. However, I do not have the time available to do look ups, but will let you know if your family is included in this book. 3. I don't have any information on this cemetery, but would be interested in knowing more about it. There is a Mr. T. R. Huffman who has lived in the same area of Dubach, most of his life. He would be a very good source to contact for those of you within distance of him. He is not on the net and doesn't have a computer, but is very knowledgeable about the county. He is a very nice man and will help any way he can, as is his brother, S.D. Huffman. They are descended from Charley Henry's line. Please keep me posted if you find the answer to this. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Gritzbaugh@aol.com> To: <LALINCOL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 26, 1999 11:35 PM Subject: Re: [LALINCOL-L] Abraham Reed > Do you know where the old Norris Cemetery is located? > My grandfather spoke of this cemetery quite often. 3. Absalom Autrey, b.l 1802 in N.C., married Elizabeth Norris on Feb. 22 , 1826 in Perry Co. Ala. Elizabeth Norris was the daughter of Thomas and Ceila (Teer) Norris. Fifteen children were born to them from 1827 to 1850. Thomas Norris was born abt. 1785 in Lincoln County, Ky. and died Nov. 1826. Elizabeth's mother, Celia Norris Autrey, and her five brothers and three sisters lived within a few miles of the Autrey's. Absalom Autrey purchased 160.24 acres of land from Anthony Wayne and Mary Norris, brother of Elizabeth, on 13 Jan. 1838. Thomas and Celia Norris lived in Caldwell Co. Ky. in 1810 and in Hopkins Co. Ky. from 1814 to 1817. In 1818 Thomas and Celia Norris moved with many others from western Ky. to the Alabama Terr. to Dallas, Co. Ala. In the fall of 1848, Celia Autrey moved with the Norris, Autrey, and Henry families to La. I have more information on this Norris family if you are interested in it. The Norris family was very much intermingled with the lives of the Autrey's; Absalom Autrey moved his large family to the Dubach, Lincoln Parish areas of La., and many of Elizabeth's family moved with him, as well as some of Absalom's siblings. The Henry family also married into the Autrey family. Hope this helps explain the connection. 2. I am well acquainted with the Huffman family. S. D. Huffman married Ruthelle Bagwell Watts as his second wife. She and my mother were double first cousins. Ruth's father was a brother to the L. C. Bagwell who refused to drag the logs over the Norris cemetery. Also, a note to Jo Autrey: I have just mailed you the check for the book plus the ancestors of my nephews. You will notice that they have very little on their father's family. He was Sammy Staples who was killed in a boating accident on Bayou Desiard (spelling? please correct me.) in 1968 near Monroe, La. Sammy was a son of Jimmie (Is it Ivey or Ivy) who married George Staples. George Staples was a son of Archibald Staples. My nephews are Russell Lynn Staples and Jeffery Alan Staples. When Sammy was killed Rusty was only five and Jeff was a baby. My sister remarried and unfortunately they do not have much information on their Dad's family. I do not think they have a picture or names of their geat grandparents. My sister asked me to help in creating a lineage chart that would include their father's family (sic: Ivy, Henry, Autrey, Norris, etc.) Are the Huffman's part of the Autrey clan? Are there any photographs in your book? Thank you so much. We are all excited about the recent genealogy knowledge that you have so graciously shared with me. Thank you, Gritzbaugh@aol.com

    2. Do you know where the old Norris Cemetery is located? My grandfather spoke of this cemetery quite often. He said it was once a rather large cemetery until the lumber companies tore it up pulling logs over the markers and graves. At that time my grandfather, L. C. Bagwell, was a logging contractor and they approached him to do the job. He refused as he knew many of the people buried there. When I asked him where it was, he would say "way back in the woods not far from here." He lived on Hwy. 151 after you pass Fellowship Bapt. Ch. and before you get to Culbertson Bapt. Church. I have often wondered if some of the first Lincoln Parish residents were buried there. Comments appreciated. Thanks Sherry Gritzbaugh

    3. Folks, In my previous message regarding the Absalom Autrey kin, I included information on Abraham Reed who married Absalom Autrey's daughter, Martha Ann. I mentioned his father, Jonas Reed, as serving under Gen. Sam Houston at the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. Excuse me! Due to the time of the posting, I didn't realize I had typed in error. I was thinking of the Autrey who served at the Alamo, and just typed what I was thinking instead of what I was reading. I knew I should have kept my eyes open while typing.:) "He was the son of Jonas and Susan (Dykes) Reed. His father served under General Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836 to help secure the freedom of Texas." This was taken from the book "ABSALOM AND ELIZABETH AUTREY AND THEIR DESCENDANTS With A Section on Thomas Norris, page 115, submitted by the descandants of this family. Now, you history buffs, can breath again, take a deeep breath and exhale. Thanks for the reminder there is no record of a Reed serving at the Alamo. Just count it to being sleepy. Shows one shouldn't post to a list so close to morning.:) Thanks, everyone. Jo Autrey *red faced in Texas* trey *red faced in Texas*
