A notice for the website of the Lafayette Genealogical Society: This is a notice to anyone who has ancestors who were part of the St. Nicholas Catholic Church near Patoutville/Lydia. There are many dozens of sites throughout which are nothing more than a pile of broken bricks and mortar. Some are open so that the remains are visible! Is this the way you would want your great-great grandmother to "rest in peace"? Furthermore, a Finance Committee from the church has posted signs announcing that if these sites are not claimed and the graves repaired, the remains will be removed to another spot and the site cleared. The vast majority of these graves have markers. A group of genealogy enthusiasts including some people who live out of state are working together to find living descendants and notify them of the need to do repairs immediately. Anyone in this organization who suspects he has an ancestor buried there can contact me, and we can help you to determine if this is a problem for you and your family. My contact info is Julaine Deare Schexnayder, 337 365-7667, or julainehome@cox.net We are also working under the leadership of genealogy hobbyist Don Louviere from Houston to map and identify all of the sites. If you can help in that regard, please send me the names and dates and location (along with a photo of the tomb, if possible) of the plot. Julaine
Members I found a site for those that know absolutely nothing about computers http://www.naw.lib.ms.us/computer.htm it's a free Power Point Presentation on Using the Internet. The second thing I found was another way to access Ancestry Library Edition: http://www.naw.lib.ms.us/genealogy.htm. The Southwest Louisiana Multicultural Association will hold its first festival, celebrating the many nationalities that have left their mark on the region, Saturday, Nov. 11, in Magnolia Park in St. Martinville. The festival begins at 9:00 with a flag raising ceremony and parade to the park, with the festival itself scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Lafayette Genealogical Society will have a booth there to encourage people to research their genealogy. If you plan to attend the festival, please consider spending an hour or two at the booth helping acquaint people with genealogy and the LGS. The officers of the society will be taking turns at the booth, but we need more help. If you can help, please let me know so we can finalize the schedule. Reply to jkiesel@louisiana.edu. Melinda took some photos on my camera. I will try to down load them tomorrow. I am just back from Washington D.C. and the conference I went to there at the DAR. I had a phone call from a lady wanting to know when she could attend your class and the specifics about time and place. ----- Original Message ----- From: <gatesearlg@aol.com> To: <LALGS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 01, 2006 11:29 AM Subject: [LALGS] Conference > We had a conference and wanted to get some photos from the ones that took > them to put on > our website. > > Earl > > ________________________________________________________________________ > Check out the new AOL. I agree Earl. Well done gang! Special kudos to Dottie, Jean, Earl, Harold, Brenda, and Charles. Pat S
All that participated in the conference should be proud of the time and effort spent to make this Footprints Conference a sucess. No where in Louisiana has these last two conference been put on with speakers from our society. We had a lot of compliments from our guests. Those that did not attend missed out on alot of information and socializing with other genealogists and friends, good food and fun. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks Lafayette Genealogy Society ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL. yes everything look so nice and the place and rooms were very well set up. I think the good lord was smiling down on us and helped to make everything just right. thank you dotty for the coming to get me and bringing me home friday. I really appreciate it. My grandson even commented --boy I wish that I had gone today. i really would have liked listening to the people of Roberts Cove (Papa Cramers relatives) and the lady (estelle Perrault) from opelousas. he really likes to hear ms. estelle talk about families. Jonathan came with us last year on the graveyard tour in opelousas and he was very impressed on how they did the tours. He has been coming with us to courthouses and graveyards and museums since age 6 and he loves listening to the information on the various family members and helping his granny and papa. We are poud of him. When he did his genealogy for his school project he made an A plus and the teacher was impressed on how far he went back in the research and how he explained each family name that he had written down. I bet that you sleep well tonight. I know when bob and I got home this afternoon I crashed and took a 2 hour nap. It felt so good when I woke up. I was tired but rested. eula ----- Original Message ----- From: Dorothy Burleigh To: lalgs@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, October 21, 2006 8:42 PM Subject: Re: [LALGS] todays conference Who are you kidding, Eula.
